  1. Thanks Cap'n! My next adventure is about to be posted πŸ˜€ We think this field has been cherry picked, but they left some of the oldest stuff behind! Shows ya what good cherry picking does. Your friend must have danced a jig on that find, I'm stuck finding them one by one. πŸ˜€ Rumor has it that a guy buried jars of coins in a farm near this one, but no one has found them.
  2. Thanks GB, all I did with the spoon handle was rinse it off with water. Cleaned up nice. Wish I got more of it tho. That's all I do with all my finds now. I use a mesh sorter pan and just hose em down. I think that's the first pewter handle, most I find are copper. I originally put an 11" coil centering device on the 13", ended up breaking two of them. Not so much the fault of the printer but my bad for using the wrong one. πŸ˜€ Recently I had a friend create a custom one and it works much better. I don't swap coils, I have a WS6 Master rig using the original shaft that weighs less than 2 pounds with the 9" on it un-centered. It's so light I don't notice any balance problem. The 13" is on SteveG's custom D2 shaft with the fancy new centering device. I had to buy a nylon bolt for it because the XP bolt is way too weak to be used for any sort of clamping force. With Steve's shaft the 13" wouldn't even stay up, the centering device helps. I'm going to talk to him at some point for suggestions as to how to keep it tight. I've got the 11" coil too, don't really see a need for it now. Haha, I'm the king of gross generalizations and fuzzy logic! 🀣 What I mean is you walk huge distances in this field and hear absolutely nothing, them bam. There are 3 hotspots, none more than an acre or so out of 100.
  3. Thanks! That's exactly what it is. A post office box combination knob. πŸ‘ Now what the heck was it doing in the middle of a farm about 10 miles from the nearest post office? πŸ€” 🀣
  4. Couldn't agree more. Which do you have? Goes for shovels too. People raise their eyebrows when I mention my Ranger shovel, but I want them to know we invest a lot of money to make sure their yards will not look like they were carpet bombed. πŸ˜€
  5. Wow that's a lot of digging Compass! You got some really cool rings there, and so many coins! πŸ‘ Great job. Hope your luck continues.
  6. Outstanding creation. πŸ‘ That's a good kid you have there.
  7. Thanks NC! Stuff like this is in most of my permissions. Just no silver 😡 well, some. I have easily found as many spectacle buckles or parts as I have Spanish silver, but more buckles than silver US currency. These hit in the 50s and 60s on the Deus, so I think most people would skip them! I shouldn't be blasΓ© about it. That's what I thought too about the knob, it's too well cast and too heavy to be some kinda cipher toy for a kid. Since there'd be another knob it would be a pretty silly combination. There's some math involved but two letters should be fairly easy to crack. πŸ˜€ Very unusual find. I'm sure there is more to be found, it takes covering a lot of ground with some really long silent gaps. You have to dig the buckshot if you want any of this stuff. πŸ™„ I think the most strange thing is that we haven't found any old buttons here. We even joked about it, maybe it was a bunch of Scotsmen mincing about nekkid making buckshot. 🀣
  8. Spent the day at the farm where I found the Scottish sixpence today, big farm with small hotspots. One of the most unusual things about this place is that despite finding a lot of really old relics in two places, not a single button has been found. This probably means it was detected by others. But, they did leave some interesting stuff behind! Got there early, it was about 30 degrees and there was a frost, but it was easy to dig, and by the end of the day it got up to around 50. I invited Chase down to see the place and give him a shot at what could be there, I only scouted it so it wasn't hammered by me. I did find some great stuff before but there was more. Used the RC and 13" for a while waiting for Chase, when he arrived I switched to the WS6 Master with the 9". What a difference. πŸ˜€ Just swinging the 13" for 2-1/2 hours got kinda tiring today, and I didn't find anything at all but buck balls. I also tested ground stabilizer a bit but quickly changed back to my original settings. Not here! We walked toward the hilltop where I found the sixpence and found some stuff on the side of the hill, here's my haul for the day: 2 spectacle halves that don't seem to fit together, a single buckle identical to my first find in this field. A pewter spoon handle end, some more buckle bits and a bag seal of some sort. The most interesting thing I dug today (not that 1600s buckles are uninteresting πŸ˜€) was the knob on the left, it's knurled and has a pin on the back. Exactly half the alphabet on the front from n-z. πŸ€” I wonder what it was used for? Hope on a return visit I find the other one 🀣 probably won't. Gotta say it was a pretty trashy day too, buck balls and bullets mostly. A couple of square nails got me too. It was fun hunting with Chase, and he did pretty well. There really isn't much in these 100 acres.
  9. I gave it a shot today, and very shortly thereafter switched it back to 2. I was using the WS6 Master, it's easier to get to the setting as it's in the main menu. What it did was give me phantom high tones, many times a 99, and there wasn't anything but iron there if anything at all. It did indeed also make the Deus more bump sensitive. I wasn't impressed, and definitely would not recommend changing it unless special conditions are realized. Watch the video for advice!
  10. Glad you're back Dringle, and sorry for the remarks but we do get a lot of "drive by" posts in this forum. πŸ˜€ Also glad you have a sense of humor πŸ™„ You should follow your posts with notifications so you know when someone has responded. Taking the specimen to a jeweler would have been my next suggestion too, if you haven't done that you will be surprised at what they will do for you for free. Anytime I find a ring without hallmarks I suspect is a good one my local shop will help me, and they encourage me to do so. Looking forward to future finds and potential numismatic discussion!
  11. Thanks for 'splaining this Chase, the video was the best I could find on the subject. πŸ™‚ My posting that link was to caution some about thinking it would be a "magic setting" or something, a lot needs to be taken into account before changing it. πŸ‘
  12. Nice run NC! πŸ‘ Cool that you said "and now for something completely different", and it came up strong. πŸ† Seems to me the D2 is full of surprises. πŸ€” Might give that a shot myself. Saw another post with similar settings that had a good return. πŸ™‚ Did you get a lot of trash?
  13. You should bronze it and put it in a display case 🀣 Are you sure that isn't older, like Aztec or Mayan? πŸ€” Great you got to try it tho. πŸ‘ Makes for much less buyers remorse.
  14. Here's a video on the subject, but that's an interesting thought. πŸ‘ https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=z2o0sCHfsPs
  15. Whoa! Now that's a handful of legit stuff! πŸ‘ Great workout with the D2. Glad we're having a sort of mild winter.
  16. Where I am just about everywhere will contain some colonial stuff. Even my yard had something despite the house being built in 2008 πŸ˜€ that's what got me into this in 2020. Retired in '21, I get out there a lot now. The woods have stuff too, but the ravines are dangerous and everywhere. Do you use topographic maps and aerials? That is a big help in evaluating a potential permission. πŸ™‚
  17. It will have to displace more water than gold and feel heavier. Here's a couple pictures of platinum nuggets: This one is from Russia: This is from California: Lucky find if it is. πŸ‘
  18. Something to be said for CooB scoops too but they're also from Ukraine. They have a wide selection of them, and they sell on Amazon. I'd like to get their Titanium scoop someday, right now I have the Shark V10 since it's the largest. 2mm stainless steel, I've had mine 2 years now and no rust or deformation but I don't hunt the beach as much as others. When I get home I rinse it with water and spray some WD-40 on it, and wipe it down. I do this with all my shovels! I made my own handle for mine out of PVC and a bamboo insert. However, SteveG makes great carbon fiber handles for them. If I ever break the one I made πŸ™„ I'll get one. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=CooB&crid=V63FKI5DWNO Here's the titanium scoop: https://www.amazon.com/CooB-Exclusive-Titanium-Detector-Detecting/dp/B09LR69CMQ Steve's Detector Rods: http://www.stevesdetectorrods.com Mine is almost 6' long. It's nice for deeper water as it helps you keep your balance when not scooping, or in moving water. Regardless of what configuration and type you buy, get a Raptor handle for it and mount it as shown angled down, it points toward the digging side of the scoop which is not only useful for leverage but also tells you which direction the scoop is in deep water, or even shallow when you stir up the bottom. https://www.amazon.com/Raptor-Pull-Handle-Sand-Scoops/dp/B01MT248MD A fairly accurate method for scooping in water is to pinpoint the target, hold the detector on the bottom and find the rear edge center of the coil with the scoop point. Lift the detector and press the scoop down at a fairly extreme angle. Gets the target much faster.
  19. 🀣 I'm out of likes Cap'n, but you tell a hell of a tale. Brilliant and funny! Hat's off to you braving the elements to get that all important "trigger time". 🫑 And doing your part saving the Gorillas! Sledding is another activity that provides one with "deposits". I don't think about it anymore due to moving to a warmer clime. πŸ˜€ Many memories of the dreaded "bloody snow" which indicates the best spots. What is the pointy thing with all the wires? Think I'da called EOD for that one. 😁
  20. Thanks! Haha, it's not easy being me-zzy. 😁 I'm going to fool around a bit more with this program I've been using, already got a name for it, but I want to get some input from Chase. We've both been seeing low reactivity works good here, he prefers one audio method over mine, and I kinda get confused over it, but maybe I'll put up the Relic Reaperβ„’ soon πŸ˜€
  21. Completely agree with you! πŸ™‚ I think it will help me avoid Alzheimer's. 🀣 This last spot still has a lot of stuff to be found, and it looks innocuous unless you do some research. That's the other fun part. Looking ahead the next 15 days are gonna be in the 50s, it's about normal here to have a "warmer" January. February and March usually suck. 😑 March especially due to high winds. Ground isn't frozen, and all my permissions are open, no winter crops! I'm going to be busy. πŸ˜€ Chase is retired now so I'll be hunting with him more. He's done a great job keeping me on track. I like writing, and hope my posts make those who can get out there do so, and in turn post stuff. I know when I can't get out I vicariously enjoy others' exploits, and it shows the newer people what's out there. Hope I'm not wearing out my welcome πŸ€”
  22. If the permissions dry up, then. πŸ˜€ I've considered looking around for a really lightweight PI detector... Oh yeah, there aren't any πŸ€”
  23. Chase mentioned another method in a trashy area, use the pinpoint function to find a spot where there's nothing, and ground balance there. You have to be a little more precise when pumping the detector but it works.
