  1. I've read of another case that had it too and required a coil replacement which is weird when yours is the detector not the coil.
  2. Thanks Jim, the pictures you've put up of finds are fantastic, my sister lived in Burns Lake, BC for many years, she's moved back to Australia recently, however she used to go to Kamloops where you found that 3rd ring regularly for her shopping. Her daughter stayed on as still in BC. It will be great if you can get your grand children Apex's for that task and to get them hooked on detecting, and the detector would be more than suitable for their needs, a nice unit to give them the detecting bug.
  3. Garrett is starting to release videos showing the Apex and it's features, I always found these sorts of videos very helpful when I was learning my Ace detector when I was new to detecting so I figured I'd drop them here to help people find them that may in the future need them. I think Garrett's done a good job with the Apex, it's often forgotten it's a beginners detector and Garrett certainly doesn't try say otherwise in their videos, very honest, if anything I think they under-rate it. I'm sure if I owned an Apex I'd do very well with it in my detecting spots, after all a majority of my coins finds I could have made with my Ace 300, and many of them have been. I guess not too long ago a detector with this pedigree and features would be considered much more than a beginners detector. I still think the Apex is one of the best looking detectors on the market, love the big screen and design. I hope their AT Series replacement follows along looking like the Apex.
  4. You could put the call out for an Aussie to buy it and ship it to you, I'm sure someone would do it if you transferred them the money, not a big lot of effort involved.
  5. A few years ago who would have thought the Simplex would seem over-priced and Minelab release a detector better value than Nokta? That's how dramatically the landscape has changed. I think the Simplex needs a massive price reduction which makes it not really viable I guess or it needs switching frequencies now to compete. The timing of these alternative Simplex models couldn't have been worse, with the X-terra beating them to market and being superior to even the "best" Simplex model in almost every way.
  6. Do they want the detector back or the coil? I hope it's a problem with the detector as I doubt they'll be replacing out of warranty Nox coils that don't work. They sound like IT support, Did you turn it off and on again 😛 Strange problem for a detector to have, but I guess its teething problems with a new model. No detector is immune I guess, except the Vanquish, it seems a flawless release, plenty of stock, a good working detector with no known faults or issues upon release.
  7. Did you not watch Terminator ? 🙂 The Internet's always been the lawless wild west, the more popular it's become the more wild it gets. A difficult thing to police so it's up to individuals to control their own piece of the Internet, Steve with the assistance of Chase does a good job around here of that, with all of the possible disruptions very little affects the users. If we all do our bit and use the "report" button when we see something suspicious I'm sure it helps a little to keep it at bay. The more difficult it's made for them the less likely they'll bother here.
  8. The tree's look good for climbing, and kids playing on, and with you being in a crazy hot climate people would be sitting around under a tree like that quite often, much more shade than a typical gum tree 🙂 i wonder what habitation was like on Magnetic Island in the early 1900's. The ferry started quite early on but I doubt it had the traffic of today. "By 1890 a resort had been started in Picnic Bay. In 1898 Robert Hayles Sr was so impressed by the potential of Magnetic Island he sold his other interests to build a resort on the island. Hayles was responsible for much of the development of Magnetic Island through tourism. In 1901 he started a regular ferry service to the island with his ship the Bee. Twelve months later this ship was wrecked on the rocks at Nobby Head, Picnic Bay, and the Phoenix was built by Hayles' sons to replace the vessel. The Hayles company remained operating services to Magnetic Island with a large number of different vessels until 1988" Picnic Bay area might be the best spot for hunting really old coins. Great finds!
  9. Wow, the 13" mono is only about 50 grams heavier than the ML 11" 6000 mono and I thought they really went to town trying to make the lightest coils possible, yet Garrett has a bigger coil that's barely heavier. Impressive, especially if build quality is better.
  10. Ask him for compensation for waiting for a product he can't provide when you can right now buy it somewhere else, and could have for some time. 🙂 You've lost detecting time because of this guy, and detecting time with a new detector can't be replaced, you have to hit your spots before someone else does.
  11. Did the say more than that? Checking it out and making it right? Makes no sense, have they asked for your not working coils to be shipped in? Or do they mean they've contacted Minelab Australia about it and are waiting to see what they say. It seems the coils that don't work need replaced at this stage, unless they're working on a firmware update that will allow the off spec coils to work.
  12. He couldn't supply the product in a reasonable amount of time, so you were not unreasonable to cancel your order. I would fight it, and I would win, not sure on your counties laws though but he'd have no hope of doing that here and getting away with it. He's the one that chose to take money for a product he couldn't provide. It could be why dealers here have lists, but they don't take money until they have the product to give you.
  13. Sounds like Deus 2 is best for you, it's just if all you wanted to use it for is native gold, especially small gold you'd benefit more from the Deus 1 being more sensitive to smaller gold and having the little 9.5 x 5" HF coil.
  14. If you're gold prospecting, Deus 1 without a doubt.
  15. JW and I often gold hunt at a spot that has high voltage power lines run smack through it from a hydro dam, it's amazing how different times of day affect the EMI in the area, it's rather remote apart from those power lines, no houses or anything going to cause EMI, not on a flight path or anything like that. We both agree on the characteristics of EMI at this place and how different times of day or even weather affect it. During heavy fog which happens quite a bit at that spot being a gully at the bottom of mountains the EMI drops right down, detectors go so calm, even the old model GPX purrs along. Wind direction seems to affect EMI from the lines too, depending on which direction the wind blows it seems to change the EMI, so weird. Times of day mean a lot, perhaps its demand on the lines but certain times of day have higher EMI, towards the end of the day usually the detectors enjoy a more stable operation right when you're getting tired and hungry the detector starts to purr 🙂 At dusk it's usually a really good time for stability which is odd as that would be a high power load time with everyone at home cooking dinner, so I don't know if it has anything to do with power draw. As it gets dark EMI goes right down. You can be hunting in one spot in the morning (a spot where I not too long ago found a 4 gram nugget) and the detector be frustrating to use, noise cancels all the time and then as the day goes on suddenly the EMI calms right down and things improve dramatically. The GPZ is by far the best detector to use at this spot, it really handles the EMI exceptionally and can detect right up near these massive power lines, especially when outfitted with the concentric coil, even though it's 15" it handles EMI much better than smaller coils than it is, perhaps due to it's small receive winding. EMI is a depth killer so doing all you can to have a detector running without being affected by EMI is important, I think you're better off running a lower sensitivity and not getting bad EMI than running unstable with EMI with higher sensitivity. EMI is also a big reason detectors get unstable or bouncy target ID's, EMI is acting like a target, the detector is detecting something (EMI) so even if you hit a good target but have EMI at the same time it can change your Target ID's undesirably.
  16. I am being optimistic 🙂 The coils are an embarrassment, but we don't need to go there. I'm just hoping the engineers at Minelab have done a lot more than a $5 roll of copper tape can do, and if a roll of tape like that could improve it's EMI capability they've failed dismally and I hope that's not the case. Their slogan is performance is everything, but I really think having a detector of a reasonable quality matters too. For the price it should be shielded as good as the engineers could possibly do, anything less is not acceptable.
  17. You did a great job getting the paint off, but its strips off the details of the part at the same time, You'd really need to contact Minelab service unless they can't help in your country. One of the Aussies that tinker with detectors maybe able to identify the part for you and would be worth making contact with. https://detectormods.com/ https://www.detectronicsaustralia.com/ They do out of warranty GPX repairs so likely can identify the part.
  18. It's possible they have, modern electronics less prone to EMI interference, the shielding paint maybe all that's needed. On the older GPX with the thick foil on the ends with the metal housing they had really good shielding, yet the detector was far more prone to EMI than the 6000, so somethings changed. I'm pretty happy with my 6000 in higher EMI areas, such an improvement over older GPX's This is the foil ends off the old GPX under the plastic covers These are connected to the alloy housing, a mistake they made on early GPX 4500's was the blue paint for the housing went over the ends of the housing from being sprayed on, so this shield was touching the paint, not the raw metal thereby the shielding was poor relying on the screws, I scraped the paint off mine on the ends, and it improved it's EMI handling. I've noticed on my 5000 the paint isn't over the ends. I also have one of these which add extra shielding, many thought they're a gimmick but they're not, they do genuinely work, I did connect a wire from it to the shield by a screw terminal though, they don't mention you need to do this and you just put it on as a cover but it's the best way to connect it to the ground of the detector for best results. . It's a cool idea trying to improve the shielding, I'd like to see someone try and if they get any success that's awesome and the feedback should go to Minelab however I'm not sure how much extra shielding would help. With the right coil, I find the 6000 to be pretty good for EMI, especially for a PI and now the EMI Audio fix has been done. @GotAU? Are you using a Torus Neck speaker? It can cause the blips with it's aptX LL glitching when the data rate doesn't keep up so you get a blip or crackle as a broken signal, it's an acknowledged issue with them that can't be fixed and one of the reasons atpX LL is gone and Bluetooth LE now exists. Qualcomm that made aptX LL discontinued it to make aptX Adaptive which resolves this blip problem but it's not as good for detectors as it's latency being slower and moving around to different latency speeds depending on signal strength so Qualcomm is out of the detector game now with standard Bluetooth's new version now being better than a proprietary codec. The Torus seems more prone to blipping than any other aptX product I've got.
  19. Speakers negative is a common ground connection normally. I don't think it will make much difference as most of the EMI is likely from the coil.
  20. It was easier with the GPX 4500/5000 where the screws holding the front and rear fascias on touched the alloy shielding and metal housing which was the floating ground. The 6000 housing shielding is very basic with just some shielding paint on the plastic housing, you'd really need to shield to the PCB, and can't without voiding warranty. So really, not much can be done.
  21. It's times like these that the Chinese fake manufacturers can come in handy, I hate buying anything from them but sometimes buying silly little parts Minelab won't sell individually and expect you to pay a fortune to get the problem resolved including their labour it just makes no sense and in that case it seems only reasonable to buy fake aftermarket parts from China like this one here, the guy may even sell you the individual part you need rather than buying the coil, worth checking it's only some plastic how different could it be to the genuine article. I bought a Garrett Ace 300I that had a broken arm cuff, because of this I got it at a very good price, I wasn't easily able to source a Garrett part in NZ so I just bought a fake arm cuff from China, problem solved and only about $15 to resolve it. If manufacturers can't help or they are unreasonable with costs the dodgy Chinese manufacturers can come in handy.
  22. I wish, the Vanquish has excellent coils, sadly they are different, although I'm sure Minelab could have made every coil work on all of these detectors if they wanted to. Nox / Vanquish / X-Terra..... they could all be compatible with each other I would guess if it wasn't for something to do with the electronic chips in the coils.
  23. I've read about this before, it seems only some Nox coils work and its the luck of the draw. There must be some discrepancy in manufacturing Minelab didn't realize or they'd not have advertised it works with Nox coils. I wonder if they'll be able to fix it with a firmware update when they acquire some not working coils and see why they don't work. It's enough for me to hold off on an X-terra anyway as without being able to use my Nox coils I wouldn't overly want it.
  24. That's one of the under-rated performance advantages the Manticore has over the Equinox 800 and I would guess the 900, it's ability to handle EMI better, either by the detector itself, it's long EMI noise cancel being better with EMI which to me it seems to be, and add the FACT that it's deeper in lower sensitivity levels than the Nox, this is a big advantage to the detector over the Nox. The Manticore on 16 sensitivity seems to keep up with the Nox 800 on deep coins when the Nox is on 24 sensitivity. It's why I believe I had good luck with the Vanquish over the Nox in high EMI areas, as the Vanquish handles EMI better than the Nox, to me the reason is unknown, frequency weighting? Frequencies being different enough to the troublesome EMI frequencies or the Elliptical coils perhaps. I did very well finding coins that I had possibly missed with the Nox due to the Vanquish being able to run in higher sensitivity settings than the Nox in these areas. You can see in this video I can run the Vanquish 1 notch off full sensitivity in jewellery mode (the most sensitive) with no real EMI troubles, in the same spot I have to wind the Equinox back to about 16 to get it as stable as the Vanquish in all modes, and with the Nox I'm using discrimination to knock out some of the EMI with all the default iron blocked out, if I go to all metal it's worse, the Vanquish I can have all targets wide open. So the question is, is the Vanquish v12 12x9" coil being elliptical less prone to EMI? If that's the case it's a demonstration of why the Vanquish did better at this particular spot than the Nox with it's 11" coil as I was getting deeper coins missed by the Nox because of the Vanquish's coil being slightly smaller and elliptical being less affected by EMI so I could run my sensitivity higher thereby giving the smaller coil more depth. I had the 11" coil on the Nox at this spot as with my usual 15x12" coil EMI was even worse, so the smaller coil was the better choice but dropping back to 6" cut the depth far too far and became counter productive, better with EMI but nowhere near deep enough to find anything worthwhile. I didn't have the 10x5" at the time but it's not deep enough to find many of the coins I find in these areas, that's been well tested.
