  1. The new Tide will make my already whiter whites whiter. You can make statistics say whatever you want. It will be fun to watch. It is all very predictable. Every PI that Minelab has ever released is met with extreme skepticism and complaints about the price. Rewind the clock to when the GPX 5000 was released. You can Google up tons of posts about how it really is no different than a GPX 4500 and not worth the extra money. Now if you wander around the forums it is now just a commonly accepted fact that the GPX 5000 represents the state of the art. It has been the same pattern with every model going back to the SD2100. I admit I used to hold off but quite some time ago I learned that when a new Minelab came out I should just get it ASAP. I actually thought this machine was going to come out two years ago because Minelab introduces new machines every two - three years, so I sold my GPX 5000 in the fall of 2012. I figured the new model would come out that winter. Shows what I know, I had to buy another GPX 5000 in the spring of 2013! Anyway, as soon as I got wind of this one I sold my GPX 5000 - again. My expectation is it will cost a lot and people will be skeptical and hold off. My plan is to have a GPZ 7000 in my hands for as many hours as I can this year. In fact my goal is to set a new personal record for hours spent detecting in a year in 2015. My recommendation is that everyone just wait and not worry about it and I will get back to you about the 40% thing this fall. Or maybe next spring! I honestly am not going to worry about it myself as it is what I am committed to using and it is going to find what it is going to find. No doubt like every detector I have ever used something else may have found whatever it is also. I could just have kept swinging my GPX 5000 this summer and been just fine. The holes I am digging are deep enough, thank you very much! But I have never yet regretted upgrading to a newer model Minelab. Not once. I am betting I do not regret this upgrade either.
  2. The codicil/disclaimer-"SNEAK PEAK MORE INFORMATION COMING SOON! Minelab GPZ 7000 Metal Detector NEW GOLD TECHNOLOGY - UP TO 40% DEEPER* *When compared to the average performance of the GPX 5000 in testing environments. Actual performance depends on prevailing conditions Still a hell of a claim..........
  3. Damn beat me to it with the picture, have it saved on my laptop...looks like Johnathan has been having fun with the GPZ 7000. I'll post my pic anyway. It's only $10,000! Yay! Lol
  4. Thanks Steve. Just wondering if anybody had ever seen it done. I was actually going to get an SDC, but since I see that they are being combined with GPXs for sale, I put things off until I find out more about the 7000. I have had my original SD2000 since 1997, that Ismael modded. I got a stock backup about ten years ago. The mods did two things that made it easy to use: 1. Got rid of the warble (running it at 8 volts) 2. More sensitive to smaller gold (adj freqs) Thanks Again - Mike
  5. Good news for me Ron is I need the downtime anyway! Ray, that is my CTX 3030 except it is faster. It is not really getting involved much in my little testing game because I know it is not going anywhere. The Minelab multi-frequency detectors in my opinion get accurate VDI information as well and as deep as it can be had. The CTX has the extra benefit of being a great saltwater beach detector that can take a dunk without harm. Right now there are several detectors that are 100% going nowhere: GPZ 7000 once I get one ATX SDC 2300 CTX 3030 Gold Bug 2 Number six is going to be a single frequency grab and go sniper unit with F75 and Gold Racer as top contenders followed by F19 and finally FORS Gold. Right now the FORS Gold is edging out the F75 even though I want the F75 to win! But it is not the latest greatest F75. All I want the Racer to do is at least equal the FORS Gold and then it will be ahead of the current F75 so it is all boiling down the newest F75 vs Gold Racer with possible F19 spoiler. The V3i I am afraid is not going to survive for just being too redundant but we will see. I am putting myself under needless pressure to weed things down to a minimum when I really do not have to. Periodically I get tired of the clutter and just want to clear house. Sorting this stuff out and typing it down just gets it all clear in my head but I do hope it is of interest. It is a very, very personal quest and nobody should take it as meaning anything is better than anything else just based on my meanderings. I am just trying to get down to a solid core group that I will use exclusively going forward so as to gain that extra edge that comes with long term committed use. The new years resolution is to try and get down to six detectors max, and to never allow myself to get another one unless something else gets ditched. Time to focus like a laser on the detecting and quit screwing around with the hardware.
  6. I am slowly cleaning up most of my used detector collection and putting it up for sale. Only a few survivors will remain for now: Fisher Gold Bug 2 Garrett ATX Minelab CTX 3030 Minelab SDC 2300 Nokta FORS Gold White's V3i With the departure of my GPX 5000 (in anticipation of the GPZ 7000) I am temporarily lacking a PI with good ground coverage. And no telling what the GPZ will have for large coil options. So after much debate I decided to pick up a new Garrett ATX Deepseeker package, to get the 15" x 20" coil and the carry case. I like the ATX and have confidence in its gold finding capability, and I have to have a waterproof PI so it covers me on two bases. I thought seriously about selling my current ATX to help fund the new one. But since I am selling so many detectors I decided to treat myself. The ATX has been frustrating me due to the packaging in a heavy duty military housing. So my old ATX is going to be sacrificed as part of a project to see just how light weight I can make it using the stock coil, but with the option of also easily mounting the Infinium 5" x 10" DD if I want to make it really featherweight. You are invited along on my step by step disassembly and reassembly project at http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/462-garrett-atx-strip-down-rebuild/ All I am waiting on is to see what Garrett releases in the way of Christmas holiday packages. Any that appear may or may not include the ATX but it is worth waiting a bit to see. Once that happens the fun and games begins!
  7. I was rather shocked at how expensive the SDC 2300 turned out to be, and was initially convinced nobody would pay that much money for a detector with an 8" hardwired coil. Now I can't imagine not having my SDC - it works that well. That's the key - at least some people will pay the price if the new machine delivers the goods. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure out the GPZ 7000 will probably set a new record for consumer detector pricing. That being the case there is no reason the GPX cannot remain for those not willing to spend whatever it turns out to be. The fact remains, the GPX 5000 is one great all around gold performer and that will not change.
  8. I hope the 7000 is not true to form regarding the price.......I also wonder if the 5000 will be discontinued
  9. Wow going by the latest info posted on this forum under the GPZ 7000 thread it appears I was not far off the mark with my guess above which I posted one month ago.
  10. I am just like a kid before Christmas wondering about new detectors. What about that new Minelab? What will it do, what will it look like, what will it cost? What about that new Fisher? Will it compare? Will it ever appear? What about that new White's patent? Should I wait to buy one not knowing about the other? Do I keep what I have? All good questions, and a lack of knowledge should never get in the way of getting answers I say, even if they have to be made up! https://www.prospectingaustralia.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8936 http://golddetecting.4umer.net/t19976-well-could-this-be-it-minelab-s-new-jupiter-gpz-7000-detector http://australianelectronicgoldprospectingforum.com/general-chat-and-discussion-forum/ml'our-next-flagship-gold-detector-will-be-based-on-new-technology/
  11. Supposedly the new super detector GPZ-7000 - code name Jupiter. Largest planet in the solar system, but then some say it's just a giant ball of gas. I suspect that a new technology gold detector from ML would be a lot more than a giant ball of gas. Right now in OZ they are doing smoking deals on combo packages of GPX-5000 and SDC-2300. If you have both of those, you are covered for everything current technology can give you except perhaps discrimination. Deep, adaptable to many different conditions - GPX-5000; sensitive to very small and porous nuggets plus EMI resistance and waterproof - SDC-2300. A repackaged "mash up" of the two would be very attractive if combined all the previous features. If it also could add reliable ferrous rejection and perhaps even VLF style target information - maybe even more depth and modern integrated Lithium battery packs, then all you would need to do is write one check and all your bases are covered.
  12. In my humble and biased opinion, the packaging of the SDC 2300 is a real winner and I hope they use it on the Jupiter or GPZ 7000. The extreme portability is what sold me on it and I find that I take it more places solely because it's so simple to fold it up and put it in a backpack and equally easy to unfold at the prospecting site. The housing system is a huge advantage. It has some minor glitches such as the armrest folding up when you don't want it to but that's pretty inconsequential. What I would really like to see is a VLF detector in that same housing system. With a headphone adapter to fit standard headphone plugs. - Bob
  13. Same timeline was announced at the dealer meeting last October in Las Vegas and again last April. http://www.detectorprospector.com/forum/topic/209-new-minelab-flagship-super-gold-detector/ The Australian forums are certainly all abuzz! FCC documents filed are referring to it as the GPZ 7000 or Jupiter. Lots of people seem to be lining up to buy one not knowing a thing about it. That bodes well for Minelab. I know I have immediately upgraded with each new version of the GP series and not regretted it. Looks like another new detector in my future. https://www.prospectingaustralia.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?id=8936 http://golddetecting.4umer.net/t19976-well-could-this-be-it-minelab-s-new-jupiter-gpz-7000-detector
  14. Here is a list of nugget detectors sorted by weight with my own somewhat arbitrary categories. Weight is not everything as balance is also very important, as is the handle design. Obviously the ability to hip mount counts for a lot. Properly designed bungee systems can render even heavy detectors weightless on the arm. ULTRA LIGHT XP DEUS - 2 lbs with built in batteries, one ounce less with control box dismounted from rod. Fisher Gold Bug / Gold Bug Pro - 2.5 lbs. with 5" coil and one 9v battery (2.7 lbs with 10" coil) Teknetics G2 - 2.8 lbs. with 11" coil and one 9v battery Fisher Gold Bug 2 - 2.9 lbs. with two 9v batteries (may be hip mounted) Minelab X-Terra 705 Gold - 2.9 lbs. with four AA batteries VERY LIGHT Garrett AT Gold - 3 lbs. with four AA batteries Garrett Gold Stinger - 3.2 lbs. with three 9v batteries (may be hip mounted) White's GMZ - 3.4 lbs. with eight AA batteries LIGHT Tesoro Lobo Super TRAQ - 3.5 lbs. with eight AA batteries (may be hip mounted) Fisher F75 - 3.5 lbs. with four AA batteries Teknetics T2 - 3.5 lbs. with four AA batteries White's TDI SL - 3.5 lbs. with eight AA batteries White’s GMT - 3.9 lbs. with eight AA batteries MEDIUM Nokta FORS Gold - 4.3 lbs. with four AA batteries White’s MXT - 4.3 lbs. with eight AA batteries HEAVY Minelab Eureka Gold - 5.3 lbs. including rechargeable battery pack or optional eight AA batteries (may be hip mounted) Minelab GPX 5000 - The GPX weighs 5.3 lbs. not including the harness mounted proprietary rechargeable battery, which weighs another 1.7 lbs. Detector weight normally supported by bungee. Garrett Infinium LS - 5.6 lbs. including rechargeable battery pack or eight AA batteries (may be hip mounted) White's TDI and TDI Pro - 5.6 lbs. including proprietary rechargeable battery (may be hip mounted) Minelab SDC 2300 - 5.7 lbs. including four C batteries VERY HEAVY Garrett ATX - 6.9 lbs. including eight AA batteries Minelab GPZ 7000 - 7.2 lbs. with standard rechargeable battery
  15. Hi Ray… your F-19 ground phase scale seems to be very similar to my F75 scale at least with respect to the upper non-conductive ferrite section where both magnetite and hematite ores normally reside. I wouldn’t expect to see much or anything on the Fe3O4 bar graph readout… hematite does not exert much magnetic susceptibility and has little effect on metal detector performance compared to magnetite. Jim.
  16. I recently upgraded to a minelab pi and cannot wait to take it out. I've been looking at a few places that are up around 7000 feet in elevation. Typically what I have read about peoples detecting tips seemed to be more focused in the lowlands. Does anybody have any tips to successfully detect at high elevations? Anything I should be doing differently or looking for? Any response is much appreciated and hopefully a few of you who work the high Sierra will see this post. Thanks
  17. Just back from a trip where we beeped gold between 6500-7000'. Not all is pine scrub, the Blue Nose Mtn area is mostly large old growth Fir. The water problem Klunker mentioned is definitely a good thing for us modern electronic prospectors. The early, then depression era miners just could not wash the ground as well as some of the bigger lower elevation workings....they removed a lot of overburden, but not all the gold. My biggest issue at those elevations are the friggin Mosquitos..... Calgeologist...what area are you in? PM ME, maybe we can hook up......
  18. 7000 ft in the Sierra means Pines and scrub growth. You will still find nuggets, but in many places the pine needle blanket together with the other organic materials on the surface means the nuggets are generally deeper. You can still detect gold, but you lose effective depth because of the pine needles and growth.
  19. Yes the Lobo St can be modified... I have video of it being power balanced...and it does gain depth in disc mode... you could move the pot to the outside ...But remeber the disc mode has no threshold so you will have to ground bal the machine bobbing and listenig for ground noise in the disc circuit....and also the disc setting will change as you ground bal...So say a nail is rejected at 2.5 but you change the ground bal....dont forget to reset the disc...it may take 3 to disc a nail or you maye be to positve on the the disc at 2.5 and inadvertanlty mask an item.. Use caution if you do an extrenal mod...I would not do it...its already set to ferrite...so that would be like about 90 if you have a numeric scale...You can turn it back some inside iof you have bad dirt and gain depth but mark it first..a setting of 80 might be as low as you could go again if you had a scale to go by...A neagtive gorun bal works better wiht a DD coil noise wise... That's the reason tesoro is so weird about not having ground bal on the disc side of the Cortes...it will skew the I.D. for some reason they have not spent time developing a circuit that will update I.D as the gorund bal changes...
