Odd But Interesting Find

four of us were out yesterday detecting and we found some small bits of gold but i found this tin in a wash out at an old mine site and we were perplexed as to what the stuff in it was , well steve broke one of the chunks in half and the smell of coffee was quite strong so we think the old timer who this belonged to boiled his coffee down and then let these chunks dry into what would be dried coffee just add hot water.

Interesting! Looks almost like obsidian nodules in the picture. Coffee nuggets?

when i first dug it up i thought gold nuggets were inside but then i realized no weight in it.

I know those guys were tough as nails, but just the smell of coffee that's been on the burner for hours should turn anyone's stomach, let alone boiling it down to nodules.  Also, have you ever seen the inside of a glass coffee carafe after it's been boiled dry?  (They likely used metal containers, but still.)

Have you tried soaking in water?  If your hypothesis is correct it should dissolve.  And maybe the nugget you hoped you would find is hidden inside.  Just beware of what my suggestion to Valens Legacy resulted in....

Neat find, Now go get your percolator and whip up a cup of 1850 coffee. I think I would send you $20 if you actually drank it Ha Ha.

here it is all brewed up smells like real dirty dish water and burnt coffee and no way would i drink it.
