It took two days to shoot these (more to come), I hope you enjoy them!

Garrett Axiom Quick Facts, Owner's Manual, Etc.

Garrett Axiom Quick Start

From a full reset / factory default, my steps are:

  1. Use default sensitivity. The Axiom default sensitivity of 4 is about the same as other detectors maxed out. New users may want to lower to 3, more experienced operators go to 5. Only go above 5 if you are willing to deal with extra noise or have more experience with the detector. over-driving the sensitivity will be the number one mistake made with the Axiom.
  2. Volume so that loudest target is not too loud - protect your hearing!. Wave over pick and set. If using headphones, set detector to full volume, and adjust headphones using their own volume controls.
  3. Set threshold to suit, for me a bare tone, others may prefer quiet.
  4. Go into menu and change Speed from default Medium to Slow (it’s smoother/quieter)
  5. Do a ground grab ground balance.
  6. Optional. Once all other settings adjusted, do an EMI cancel if it seems necessary. If you use a pinpointer, turn it on and place 3 feet away before doing the EMI cancel.
  7. Start detecting, keep the coil low, go slow. Dig all signals, but in heavy nails, low chance of really large gold, focus on sweet high tones.

Once the Axiom is set, if you power off, and power back on, all settings are retained. If you ever feel like things are not right for some reason, hold the power button in while powered up, until detector double blips, and screen says 49 49. Power off, back on, and you are back at factory defaults, ready to tune from start. I recommend doing this at any major change of location. or a coil change.

Garrett Axiom Tips For Gold Success

Important note added 11/22/22 - Do Not Go To Full Sensitivity except for rare situations. This contradicts the video, but Axiom went on steroids after it was shot, so I will be adding an addendum asap. New information on recommended sensitivity settings 11/23/22

Good job. Right to the point, no "ummms", well spoken. You could make your own Youtube vids.

Looking forward to seeing how the speed settings alter the target recovery speed when I get one in hand. The "other" detector leaves something to be desired there when working in trashy areas, causing lots of holding the coil still and waiting for recovery.

Also curious how the timings work in alkali. Like, is Salt timing kinda overkill? Fine or Normal work ok with a bit of grunt/groan?

Thanks for these!  I am very interested in this detector to replace my aging Gpx 4800.  One question, do you know if the operating channel or frequency can be manually changed?  The auto scan is nice if you are out hunting alone amd do it once or twice during the hunt, but if you are doing a large group hunt, as people wander through your area its nice to be able to change it manually like on the gpx. Waiting on that full scan multiple times a day gets old fast.

The speed setting differences are pretty subtle. I only use slow myself, since it is the quietest. Salt is only for worst of the worst, like the beach, as the other settings will usually handle any normal desert stuff with ease.

There is no manual adjust unfortunately, on either the ground balance, or the frequency scan. I'd like both myself. Honestly, it always just comes down to a judgement call on what is needed, and what is too much. I advise, but don't make those calls. The frequency scan is god awful slow, but good news is you rarely have to use it. Or at least I did not. No doubt somebody will find some place in Arizona that really sucks, happens every time.

Thanks for the reply. I sometimes attene group relic hunts and people wander through the area you are working with their detector. We learned on the GPX's to just manual tune to a clear channel as its faster than autotune. Hopefully this is something Garrett can add in a software update. 🙏

Seems right up my alley...simple. I don't like detectors that are complicated, and make you start second guessing on weather it's set up good or not. Rather detect, than program. Now, ...if only I did NOT have to pay for my daughter's wedding in October, haha
