This is a HEATHKIT GD-48 metal detector in this picture. I built one from a kit in 1968. It was my second detector. The first detector I had was a homemade unit that I built from an article in Popular Electronics magazine. It used a transistor radio as the receiver, and the transmitter and coil worked with a simple single transistor circuit.

In the city we used the coil to fry bacon when the sun was hot.

When I bought my first detector in 69/70 that was the almighty.

The Heathkit, my first one that my brother and I built, lol.  That’s going way back.

So does my longtime friend. He is older than the dirt he sleeps in. Kinda sucks.

My first detector was a Jetco Treasure Hawk that I got for Christmas in 1969.  Found tons and tons of junk with it down to about 2 inches.  Got me hooked though.  I bought that Ground Hawk about 20 years ago and I'm not sure if you ever tried that one.  Nice machine and I should have kept it, but I traded it for a camo Fisher F19; by far the best relic machine I've ever used, and I've used most of them.
