jawbone Posted August 28, 2023 Share Posted August 28, 2023 Another option is a gas powered drill like a Ponjar or an old Atlas Copco for surface drilling. The newer generators are relatively light and cheap and combined with a corded drill or paving breaker are much less temperamental than the gas powered drills. Air drills are a necessity though once you sink below the water table and they can be used as a breaker or a drill depending on the type of steel used. The kids running a tripod hoist and me on an old Skil corded rotohammer with a 2500 watt Coleman generator dug a 27 ft. by 32 in. round shaft in mostly volcanic ash and rock alluvium over a 2 week period trying to reach bedrock on a placer claim. The DEQ inspector found it hard to believe that we didn't hire an auger truck. The lack of tire tracks and drill pad convinced him. As it turned out bedrock was at 42 feet in that part of the claim as shown by a monitoring well 100ft south. We struck it at 18 ft farther uphill on the bench. A round shaft requires about half the amount of excavating compared to a square one. See the "Mining Engineers Handbook" by Peele (early editions) on digging placer exploration pits by hand.
