Need Help With Button ID

Went relic hunting with a friend this last weekend in the Western states and he found a button we can't identify. At first we thought it was a North Carolina military button, but now that it's cleaned up I don't think so. Maybe one of you Eastern states guys can ID it. Thanks.

I'll ask him for one. I know he said it has a patent date of 1870

possibly some variation derived from the Pennsylvania state seal.  Figuring out what NC is may be the key.

Now that I know it's the PA state seal, I was able to find the button online. It's a PA national guard button from the late 1870's thru the early 1890's Thanks for the help.

It certainly has the look of an Officer's button, not just regular issue.

Pennsylvania National Guard staff button. 👍🙂 I thought it was NC too.
