  1. So here is the gold I got last weekend after an acid bath. I think they could use a second bath as I think the acid tends to reach a maximum degree of cleaning when it turns orange. These were in acid for a couple days.
  2. Why was it crummy? You had some nice pieces from the Equinox.
  3. Lunk, it was nice meeting you and Steve as well. After you left and I ate dinner I got out my torch and hydro shocked those rocks to get the gold out. Something to do back at camp. I was too wiped out to want to go detecting any more sat evening. I will be glad when my other spots open up from the snow load. If you are up for a trip to Avon let me know. Should be another two or three weeks. That will give me time to replace my entire suspension on my tacoma.
  4. Your welcome . Hopefully we will pass over some bigger pieces of gold than the little ones we got. My ten pieces of gold only came to 16 grains. They are now sitting in acid.
  5. If you go with the 705 you most definitely need to get the 6" DD HF coil and the 15" DD HF these two coils are absolutely essential for gold nuggets. The Xterra705 is very good for tailing piles with the 15 coil. I will be using my 705 this weekend on tailing piles from a dredge and some piles on a hydraulic dig. I will grid off a section at a time with surveyors twine to make sure I cover the ground thoroughly with sensitivity reduced to where it is quiet with no ground chatter. I want to be able to hear the faintest real target signal. After this is complete I will research the area with the sensitivity set to max of 30 for the depth and listen for the very distinct target signals through the chatter. These signals should be always repeatable no matter which direction you swing the coil over them.
  6. Gold Monster 1000 is very hard to beat. Go onto minelab and check it out. If you are former military you will get a discount with proof of service.
  7. That's a great first nugget Scott. A big congrats to you. The first one is always the hardest to find. You will see all the rest will be easier to find and when you start finding them, your old methods of finding gold will most definitely be a thing of the past. Thanks for letting me know that Thompson Pass is open now.
  8. Vince, that is some very nice gold and the Goldmonster 1000 is amazing at finding small gold nuggets exactly like the pics you showed all of us. It is easy to use and learn. The coil is waterproof, at least the 5 inch coil is for sure. the control box is not. That bedrock is outstanding for trapping gold. What exactly is the meaning of Gallia Aurifera? You have me completely intrigued with gold from France. I had no idea France was so rich in gold. Here are some nuggets I found with my Gold monster 1000.
  9. I have been using this jug of acid for 3 years now and to this day when I take the cap off, Smokey fumes will rise out of the jug. It is some very potent acid for cleaning gold and quartz. I use to use a mixture of Hydrofloric and phosphoric acid to completely eat away the quartz and as soon as specimen was put in the acid the quartz started dissolving. I got rid of this particular acid after I had a very close call when my hand jerked to the side and it splashed out of the container. The acid was running down the chemical glove and came about an inch or two from dripping onto my arm. That was enough to scare the Hell out of me, so I just stick to the acid in the picture. If I want to get rid of the quartz then I hydro - shock it. I heat the specimen up till the quartz is glowing orange. Then drop it in cold water. Repeat the process til you get it the way you like it. After that I will give it the acid bath. If you have it in acid for 1 week then you need to neutralize it in a strong solution of baking soda water for triple the time it was in acid. If you dont it won't effectively neutralize the acid.
  10. Gb_amateur, as you can see from the photograph of my jug of muriatic acid it says right below the word muriatic 45% hydrochloric acid.
  11. The result you got is very good. However, muriatic acid with a 31% or is it 41% hydrochloric acid will do a better job in a week's time. You need to change out the acid halfway thru the cleaning period. I have an article in March of 2017 ICMJ mining journal titled "Sampling Cleaning and Hydro-Shocking quartz gold specimens." If anyone has questions, ask away.
  12. I spoke with Sarah last weekend they are still trying to acquire all the data they need to make registered claims available on OnXHunt. She will call me or email me when she has more info.
  13. I was getting about 2-3 inches if I remember with the 4000 with the 8" commander mono and 11" dd. I sold it in 2012 because since I bought my 705 in 2009 I had only found one piece of gold with the 4000 up to the time I sold it. I am getting depth of 6-7 inches with the 5" on the monster even the tiniest in the picture. All pieces in photo were found last summer and fall with the monster. Except for the two bigger ones, all the rest were found in a 6×8 ft area. 10 in one weekend alone.
  14. Bob where you and I live and the areas we have close to detect a vlf is more than adequate. I've had a gpx4000 in our neck of the woods and you dig deep holes constantly for square nails. The iron mask on those detectors has a depth of around 6 inches so to verify a bad or good target you have to get down to within that distance to decide to keep digging or not. In my opinion most areas we have to detect up here is best achieved with a vlf. And the three detectors I would recommend are the Xterra 705 with the 6 inch DD HF and the 15 inch DD HF. The next is the Gold Monster 1000 and then the third is the Equinox 800. I have had far more success with the gold monster than the gpx 4000. Even my Xterra 705 netted me more nuggets. The one area up here where the 4000 would outshine these is Scratch Gravel Hills near Helena. Its all decaying granite and extremely hot. Ideal area for a gpx or gp or gpz. You really cannot go wrong with a monster.
  15. Montana blm used to have a program called Montana cadastral. It had the GPS coordinates and also showed the claim boundaries. It was easy to use but to no big surprise they got rid of it and are using LR 2000. Heaven forbid if the government retained a user friendly web site. Hahaha.
  16. OnX Hunt is the phone app that has overlays for state, forest service, blm, private properties and gives land ownership information. The company is based in Missoula MT and I spoke with them last week. They said it lists patented claims but not registered claims. I told her it would be a huge market boost for her company it they included registered claims. She typed in some info on her computer and they can access the info of LR2000 and upload claim info for each state. She will have a meeting with the other owners of this company and she feels it will be beneficial to add it to the app and it is not a difficult problem for them to include it. I will keep everyone posted.
  17. MontAmmie I live in Montana and there are many many good places to detect for gold that have not been pounded to death with a detector for such as az and nv. If you are going to be in Bozeman look at joining the go as so you can drive up to Raidersburg just south of Canyon Ferry reservoir. There is good gold found there with detectors. The gold is shallow. Surface down to about 8 or 9 inches. Gram size nuggets. A Gold Monster 1000 would work amazingly well in this area. It isn't all that far from Bozeman. I have a couple friends from Bozeman that hunt this area every year with success. I can help you out with other areas as well. You have to find the right kind of tailing piles here in Montana for the nuggets. It is time consuming and a lot of the time can your efforts can come up empty. Stick to bedrock or areas near bedrock. Also areas known to produce nuggets. If you can get up around Helena or between Helena and Butts that would be good. Basin Creek is good with a detector. Order a good pair of snake guards from Chris Ghoulson at Arizona Outback. You will need them as these areas are prime rattlesnake country. Just don't stick your hands down to start digging until you investigate for any hidden snakes. Even small baby rattlesnakes. Just keep a lookout and be cautious and you will be fine. Any other questions feel free to ask.
  18. Take a four prong take and attach a few high poundage rare earth magnets and spend a bit of time raking out as much of the cans as possible. The long four prongs will work very well to plow up the ground and the cans so they can get sucked up to the magnets. It might take some time but chances are it will be worth the effort when you go back into the pile, this time swinging your detector.
  19. Do you know of any old stage coach routes in your area? Your not all that far from Libby Creek by Libby MT. Good gold in this spot . If you are ever able to make it down this way, let me know in advance and I can take you to a couple good spots. There is a lot I can teach you if you are interested.
  20. Underscore, I don't know what BC's laws are concerning detecting historical sites but here in Montana if someone gets caught doing that they can face thousands of dollars in fines, confiscation of their equipment and vehicle and up to 20 years in prison. Check your laws before searching those areas. Better safe than sorry, you know. My videos will be of great benefit to you in your region. Don't discredit finding gold on the mountain sides for float or residual gold deposits. Those are excellent places to search. A friend of my sold a claim to a couple guys and their first trip there detecting netted them 6 ounces of gold/quartz specimens.
  21. Underscore, the DVD's I will be making will have plenty of how to tips in regards to looking for the clues to put yourself where the gold should be hiding as well as to look when it is not where it typically should be trapped. There will be input on hunting creeks, bedrock in and out of the creek, how to find the earliest stream level of a creek you want to detect. By earliest, I mean the beginning of that creeks history. This can put you in areas to detect for gold that many people may overlook. I will talk about tools for different types of hunting, a lot of it is not rocket science but things that can speed up retrieval. I will have footage of hunting dredge piles, hydraulic pits, hunting for eluvial and alluvial deposits, bench deposits, residual deposits, recognizing the important rocks associated with gold, the type of research you want to undertake to find out what exactly was taking place with the gold deposits in the area you want to search, understanding your detector. I am a Minelab kind of guy so I will only talk about their detectors in depth. I my opinion their detectors are the highest quality and best performance and I have used other brands with much less success than Minlabs. Just my opinion based on my experience going back to 1980. There is a reason Minelab has 50 engineers developing their detectors. I will have much more in my videos as well such as gold detecting with specific detectors like the gold monster and the Xterra 705. They will be in dvd cases with a front and back cover and single dvd's will probably be $19.95 and videos that will be a two DVD set will be $29.95. The singles will be around an hour long and two hours for the two dvd set. I am curious as to what state you are hunting for gold in?
  22. I have found nuggets towards the middle of a creek wedged tightly in bedrock which took around 45 minutes to chip it out of the crack with rock hammer and chisel. For bedrock a Estwing rock hammer and a good set of chisel are essential. Have you tried using a gold suction tube after you loosened up the target zone? You might want to tie on a cord or something to your detector attached to your chest area when you are digging to keep it from falling into the river. Stick closer to shore as well as the benches along the river.
  23. The gold monster is perfect for hunting bedrock. All the gold in my attached photo was found on bedrock. All but the two larger ones were found in a hydraulic mine and were in the bedrock. Most all these tiny pieces were found on average of 6 inches down in the bedrock. Some were under the middle of two slabs of bedrock and one was completely encased in a slab of bedrock 6 inches down. It is very good at this type of gold hunting. The other two were found in bedrock also but along Libby creek. One was in the middle of the creek.
  24. Hey underscore I am in the process of purchasing the equipment I need to make the very exact type of videos you are looking for. I have the camera and just purchased a powerful new laptop for soul purpose of editing the footage, which will arrive on the 6th of February. This spring I will be creating videos on gold detecting and geology relating to detecting for gold. They will not be YouTube videos. They will however be dad's that will be available to buy. I have searched for a long time for just such videos as well several years ago. Not much out there so I decided I needed to undertake that myself. I hope to have the first one done by June or July. Let me know if you are interested. I would like to know what kind of info on tips has been in your mind that you are looking for.
