  1. When I realized it was a wallet I thought that perhaps there was a ring or medallion inside of it making it detectable. At one time I carried a beautiful St. Benedict medal around with me in my wallet. I had found it in the wet sand with my detector. It was wrapped in paper and must have fallen out of my wallet when I pulled out a credit card. 😞
  2. Wow! I'm impressed that you found it so fast. Thank you so much for providing the information and, yes, there seems to be quite the history behind these things. If "dorge" ever comes up on Jeopardy I'll be ready! 😄
  3. My friend is just getting started with metal detecting and sent me this picture of an object he dug in a local park. It looks old to me but I have no guesses. Any ideas?
  4. Amazing recovery - congrats! I honestly think that some things are just meant to be and it does often feel like some heavenly intervention is taking place.
  5. He lost the wallet in the water and by the time I found it it was also under the wet sand so those tags must not work in those locations.
  6. Unfortunately, I did not find any jewelry and very few coins on the hunt. 😞
  7. I don't know if this has been discussed before but I think it is an interesting topic. Yesterday I got a strong signal while working in the shallow surf and scooped out a black rectangular target that I thought was a cell phone. I quickly realized that it was a thick wallet and quickly stuffed it into my finds pouch. When I got back to my car I looked at the contents and saw a quarter-sized metal disc in a leather sleeve which was part of the wallet. This disc is what my TDI had detected. I didn't know what the disc was at first. I thought it might be something used to pay for things. As it turns out it was an "air tag", a device to locate lost items. However, as many of you probably know, these things have been in the news since they have been used to track people and steal cars among other things. The battery lasts for a year, I believe, and the device was actually beeping when I went out to the garage this morning. The wallet had a number of credit, membership and ID cards including a Driver's License along with a couple dollars. I was able to contact the owner from a business card in the wallet and everything is on its way back to him already. He was very appreciative of me returning it to him promptly and described exactly where he had lost it 2 weeks ago. In reading up on these air tags I realized that if you find one, it seems like the owner could actually find where you live. If I find another one of these tags I may want to think twice about taking it home with the rest of my finds.
  8. Congrats on the gold! At first I thought that big ring was gold from the picture. That butter knife would make a nice letter opener.
  9. "I assume that 'silver slayer' program is really for any high conductor, and maybe optimized for the sizes of (high Ag content) silver coins and jewelry." I was wondering the same and thinking that most gold jewelry would not be detected?
  10. Wow! That is an impressive amount of trash and shows how thorough a hunter you are.
  11. If you have an Equinox 800 I encourage you to test it on a medium or large gold chain using the Gold 2 mode. Yes, gold chains are hard to find but of my 6 detectors the Nox in Gold 2 (and 6" coil) is the only one that will find gold chains at 4-5 inches deep. Unfortunately, Gold 2 doesn't work in the wet salt beach sand so my gold chains have been found in fresh water.
  12. Wow what a beautiful ring! Congrats on the find and restoration!
  13. I guess I'm a dinosaur as I don't think of a pinpointer as a must have. We got along without them for years. If you can get one thrown in as part of a package that's great but you could certainly get started without one. A flat blade screwdriver will be fine as a digging tool and you probably already have one. I have the Nox 800 but I know the 600 is a great detector as well. Since the beach is not a concern the Simplex may be a good value.
  14. "I have a TDI Beach Hunter for sale if you want in excellent condition." At least I think this is close. Been studying Italian on Duolingo.
  15. Nice silver! Maybe someone's initials and (20)22?
  16. I had to listen to his comment a couple of times to make sure that I heard correctly. That's a pretty insane depth. I just went out and looked at my tape measure and digging that deep for targets almost seems unimaginable.
  17. Most everyone's collections of tungsten carbide and stainless steel rings are growing. We'd all like to find more gold but that beautiful opal ring might be worth more than small gold.
  18. Wow, finding any gold as the first target is a pretty uncommon feat but honker gold is especially rare - congrats!!
  19. It's always great to find something that the wife likes and will wear. Congrats!!!
  20. Wow! I can't help with the "EDL" meaning but what a find - congrats!
  21. Thanks VL, The clasps or earring backs are readily available on-line and at many retailers. I could have purchased a genuine pair of silver Tiffany earring backs for around $40 but opted for a generic set of sterling silver backs for only a few dollars. They are quite small and would be a challenge to find with a metal detector. Even if someone were to find one they may not recognize it for what it is. Some sets in gold or platinum sell for hundreds of dollars and even a single earring back is coveted as a replacement for a lost one.
  22. Thanks dog! Seeing T&Co. in the scoop always puts a smile on my face.
  23. ...and certainly one of a kind. Back on Sept 16th I posted about some of my finds from Hurricane Kay including a picture of a silver Tiffany earring. I made a similar post on another website as well as asking if any other detectorists had found an earring that would match. As it turned out, the same week that I found that earring another hunter, 2300 miles away, on a beach near Savannah, Georgia scooped out a perfect match. He saw my post and graciously agreed to getting both halves together to make a complete set. Some lucky girl in my family is going to know just how special her "new" earrings are.
