  1. Norm, Terry, Jack and Chuck...thanks boys. I was happy seeing it pop out of the hole best one I've ever found, hummm? Only one I've ever found, so another bucket lister checked off in the books. Been back a couple of times and only finding tons of rusted bottle caps, nails (old rusted round) pull tabs, rolled up old lead tooth paste tube and other trash. I think I'm almost at my limit here for a few days?. Chuck, I'm looking forward to seeing the craftsmanship on those work benches your woodwork is amazing, I'll,bet the shop looks pretty nice. Definitely time for a hunt break, well anytime is good for a hunt I'd guess? Heading to forrest hill for a day next month and then 3 days up at Bassett's, I'll give you a call. Clark
  2. There is an old park near my home, one I've hunted fairly often not that I've found much of interest beyond the usual junk jewelry and clad, but the area is rich in history, so I'm always hopeful. Sadly most of the old park is gone to new grass, play areas and everything else park like is new'ish, still the park is dear to my heart with fond memories there as a toddler watching my dad play music on stage there, towards the end of his music career on one holiday, the old grandstand long gone. There is one area above the developed park that looks like fairly virgin ground, a little section kept to wilderness and loaded with trash old and new, more on the old side but still plenty of non ferrous. It's an overwhelmingly difficult area to isolate a signal and when I go in there I usually don't last very long before finding myself back into the manicured lawn. With the new hunting season on us and plans for the high country in the works I've taken to punishing my self in this undeveloped part of the park testing different settings on the deus 9"hf coil, with the exception of milder soil than up north making things a bit easier, I'm thinking this should be good practice for my ear for the iron infested gold field areas. I took a couple of pictures in my hunt area, the city crews cut the grass in a few spots and the poison oak's not out much yet so hunting is not to bad in those places. The other two pictures other than the coins show some old stone steps running up the hill in one picture and the other shows what looks to me like the foundation from an old stone fire place and some of the building foundation stones. I found the handle from an old cooking pot not far from the fireplace stones, the coins came from different spots between the fireplace stones and stone step, all targets around 4" or so deep. Hunted an hour today and all I could find were pieces of old aluminum, rusted bottle caps (I knew, but checked due to the iron trash) some clad and a house key also a bit of melted lead, junk...but still targets. I really think this spot has something if I can find the willpower to stick it out??. The buffalo didn't see much circulation before someone dropped it and is fairly decent if not for the heavy corrosion from being buried for so long, my scrubbing didn't help the coin any, but I don't think when they are corroded that much that it really matters, so I scrubbed the heck out of it so I could enjoy my find. So, buffalo, couple of wheats... must be something else???
  3. Amazing finds, the high carrot ring is really pretty. The Chinese coin is from emperor Kang Xi 1654-1722 cool old Chinese coin, also love the powder flask good hunting struck!
  4. I have been curiously watching the new Netflix "Lost in Space", I remember as a kid watching the original when it was released. In episode 4 on the aleian planet, the Robinson kids and robot are in the forrest and there is a scene that you can see in the background what appears to be a large rock hand stacked tailing pile. Another scene just shortly after in the forrest shows signs of what looks to me like an area that was ground sluiced. I was on the fence as to volunteering for a mission like this, but if there is gold prospecting afoot I'm might have to think about it?. All I'd need is my 7000 and the robot to dig my holes...he's probably made by mineLab too, first projected look at the new mineLab 7 trillion, (that would also be the price).
  5. I bought my son one of the PF-35 for x-mass an he really liked it a lot, said he thought it was more sensitive and a little better depth than his carrot, although he likes them both.
  6. Great finds, the rr is for "rail road" that meant the watch needed to make certain accuracy requirements. If the watch still has the inner works the maker of the watch may be on the works and sometimes is different than the mark for the case on the watch face which could be marked for the dealer.
  7. Looks like a lamp shade finial that somebody threaded a carriage bolt into to me.
  8. Wow, probably need a pretty big pouch and they must be heavy, wouldn't want to hunt to near the waters edge with a few kilos of old bronze spikes tied to my belt?. Rat that must have been a blast hunting in an old site like that, I'm envious... lucky river rat?? I don't use the emote buttons that much, never used the thumbs up ever... had to stop and pick the color skin I wanted, hmmm if I pick the wrong one is that a problem, or have some message I'm not aware of? Must be important because there was a third button checking to be sure it was my correct choice. OF COURSE NOT, I wanted the color GOLD! Great job rat on finding all the cool stuff.
  9. Largo and rat, he was in the same general area as the salvage operation of the 1500s wreck unfortunately and probably contributing to the ships accident the coast is very rough and weather stormy almost the entire time he was there, so not much opportunity to hunt plus his digging tool was better suited for a kitty litter box than treasure hunting so he was limited on how much sand he could sift and how far into the water he could go. The attached screen shot of a plastic tub filled with water and artifacts from a video produced by the salvage company shows a few deck spikes that on casual inspection appear very similar to his.
  10. That's probably where they are staying I'd guess, seems like it would be a fun place to hunt. He didn't say how much time he's had hunting or if he'd found much of anything else, but I'm guessing he will hunt that spot a little more if for no other reason than that spot might collect the heavy metal stuff he really wants. Anything, anything, anything modern or old, don't matter don't matter jut please make it silver or gold. Hmmmm, my wife has been talking about vacation someplace and I've been talking about detecting... this could work.
  11. There is a little similarity to these spikes found in Florida, supposedly Spanish from the early 1700s.
  12. 1 pair of ray bans have been lost, the curse of the Dominican beach resort... yep, he's n the trail of treasure, just needs to dig one more hole the spike being of Templar orrigan for certain, sending it to the brothers on the island for further research and scientific testing will reveal more clues to the mystery, tune in next episode the secret will be revealeddddddzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzz zzzzzzzz. Ops, sorry I actually kind of hate to admit I kinda like the show, just the past few episodes (ok, most) are difficult to stay awake for until the end they need to quit selling ad space for the network and step it up a little in the treasure/typical cr@p revealing department. The edges are pretty sharp I didn't notice that, the color throws me a little I wonder what it's purpose was? Could be something industrial made for a marine environment I guess, lot of wired stuff out there to find. Yea, sure would be nice sipping a margarita or two and sifting a few scoops of sand with the old beeper and the young beeper, hope he finds a nice piece of gold to remember his adventure he was telling me there are areas near the resort that detectable gold has been found in the past.
  13. My oldest son is on vacation in the Dominican Republic and brought his whites sst with him to do a little treasure hunting while there. He is down one pair of ray bans to the ocean currents but did find this interesting spike that looks pretty old, now he just needs the treasure that went with the ship!
  14. Rail Dawg, I was on the preorder list and had one of the first US shipped GPZ's when they were first released. I'm not aware of any problems affecting a large number of units, I did have a screen issue where two thin dark streaks appeared across a part of the display screen although the unit had also been dropped hard enough to crack the case and bounced around in the back of my car on a few rough roads. MineLab gave me a new 7000 on warranty with no questions about the abuse, I think a few units had the screen issue and may have shown up in the ctx as well, but I don't think it was something widespread and the problem is obvious when the detector is powered up. GB was tough in some small percentage of conditions with the first software version but the software updates have made great improvements. That's my experience, it's a great detector only wish I was as good as my mineLab...
  15. Yea, congratulations!!! Great little nugget Tom.
  16. I'm guessing Merton prime rib would put yak anything to shame. coincidentally my wife said Chinese news was covering a story on a crisis at Napa lake, seems the fish are to well fed and overcrowding is causing some big problems, to many big fish...probably don't want to swim there, you might not get very far.
  17. I'll agree also with what has been said, I've used both the Deus ($$$) and whites SST and they both performed surprisingly similar taking into consideration the limited settings options on the SST. One super easy and one small light and complicated, I wish many times I still had the whites it was fun to use and performed great at my local parks and beach.
  18. Deft, you will have a blast in China and if you can speak a little mandarin it'll be easy getting around and people will want to talk to you a lot, they are curious to learn as much about western culture as possible and take every opportunity to study English when they can. There are opportunities teaching English if you talk to the right people, I've met people over there that have supported themselves for a couple of years teaching English and some of them I know did not speak much Chinese. I've been to a bunch of different areas and one thing in common everywhere is how hospitable most everyone is, only downside to all the hospitality is I've had to eat stuff I hate and then of course try and pretend it's good, this in turn gets you a second helping...sometimes some for the road. We had lunch with a local family in a traditional farmhouse in Shangri-la, yak butter tea, samba, yak cheese, some bread that was like pita bread and fried pork. The bread, cheese and pork were pretty good although the cheese was very strong and bitter... the yak butter tea was another story, very spoiled tasting and greasy at the same time. The samba was a flour of some sort mixed at the table by hand and was a combination of this bland flour and yak butter tea. My wife, when are hosts aren't looking kindly slips her samba onto my plate, guess I'll have thirds. You being more aware than me in your study of Buddhism probably wouldn't make the same mistake as I did, we were heading to the farm house for lunch driving past Napa lake. This is a giant lake, no boats or people in sight anywhere around the water, I ask our friend if there are fish in the lake? Oh yes he says, but it turns out this lake is where you go after you die and the fish there eat the remains after the appropriate ritual, so fishing is kind of frowned on there as they are against the whole eating our ancestors thing...don't ask if you can fish there.
  19. Deft, you seem pretty knowledgeable in this eastern stuff, interesting info you spent any time there? your little carved Buddha sounds cool, I've got something else similar carved out of olive pits a friend from Beijing gave me, not as unusual a location for this type of gift to come from as Branson.:)
  20. Thanks Chuck, first thing I have to do is work on some communication issues, not uncommon in cross cultural relationships. Seems my new hunting friend is misunderstanding things a bit and when I say silver coin, hehe oh my, language barriers. Went back yesterday and little silver Buddha keeps thinking I'm saying torn up crumpled shredded aluminum. I tried different words thinking my accent was confusing my partner, clad quarter... must mean deep crushed aluminum can in his ancient dilalect. Guess I'm going to have to bust out the Rosetta Stone and try and sort this miscommunication thing out before this new threesome between the French girl, Buddha and me goes south.
  21. Buddha (I'm a terrible speller, thanks Steve for the halp)... thanks Deft, Buddha is now my little lucky hunting buddy, we been chatting and he said he might show me a silver or two, just have to be careful not to be greedy or anything like that. If I behave myself when we get to gold country, no promises or such...just have to rub his belly good.
  22. It's finally cooled down enough here to get out and hunt a little, temps have been up around 106 and staying in the high 60's overnight. Yesterday was warm and humid and most of the time the sun was hidden by the overcast, me and the French girl hit one of my regular parks late afternoon for a couple hours of trying to find the elusive silver coin I know is hiding someplace there. I've found a dozen wheat's and beaver tails are plentiful, to rub salt in the wound one of the neighbors has told me his story of finding a seated dime in his front yard next to the park, he keeps forgetting he's already told me the story...I'm sure I'll hear it again. I've been playing with a customized Deus fast program running the disc at factory preset GB slightly negative, sensitivity at 95, 14khz, reactivity at 2 1/2 silencer -1, iron vol 1, audio 4, 4 tones with the highest frequency threshold break point elevated to 89 and the frequency set at 800 as a set hunting program and an alternate same settings with full tones to switch back and forth to help with audio discrimination. I've been playing with multi-notch and only searching display numbers 50-78 and 87-99 I'm digging a higher percentage of targets and trying to limit some of the foil while still having a chance at a gold ring, although it seems to make the audio a little Chirpy, that's where switching to the unnotched full tones gives a better second look. The locals were showing up and I was working my way back to the car when I hit a very solid tight target locked on at 90 with the round hf coil 14 kHz, down about 6" out popped what I thought was an high voltage pg&E connector, when I rubbed the dirt off it was a little Buda. Thought it was a lead token/game piece at first but after a rinse and brush the metal is much to hard, weighed almost 28g and the specific gravity is around 10.14, almost silver? My guess based on where it was found it could have been made in something like a high school jewelry class, back when I was in high school we did stuff like this and everything was mixtures of what ever silver scraps the kids collected at home plus/or bought from the teacher at class. Almost everything all the work was cast or sheet silver it was cheep and easy to work with, we used nickel silver too but the SG is much lower I think. Hard to say how he wound up buried in this little park but I think it's has to be good luck to liberate him.
  23. Hi Luca, I'm fairly new to the gold hunt and love the adventure too. Welcome to the hunt, great you are finding a little gold that's the first step. Is that the biggest gold anyone has found in the area you are looking? Have you any experience using a detector, or relic/coin hunted?
