  1. If you know where i can get free metal detecting magazines put the link or website name here I greatly appreciate it Thanks
  2. Around here in the Klamaths bedrock is at lest 2 feel down and often much deeper. Digging through several feet of boulders and cobbles is serious hard work. Then there is sand sliding in from the sides making progress very slow. To beat that, I need to set the sides of the hole far apart or I get a hole with a hand-sized bottom continually filled with sand from the sides. That is a lot of work. Historically the creek was a huge gold producer. I see little or no gold in the upper material. Have I just not found the right spot, or is sluicing here hopeless? Should I spend more time prospecting for productive material near the surface, or give it up?
  3. I’m sure Bob has had a lot to deal with but I’d hope we’d heard from him bye now. If anyone on here can fill in the void of not knowing . Please reply! Chuck
  4. I had a couple lead test targets for calibrating in the field but lost them on my last Western expedition. This is the main reason I don't use gold test targets! I'm ready to make a new set. I'd like to hear your advice on what size and shape of lead I should be using, for both LF and PI detectors.
  5. Hello, I am brand new to metal detecting. My girlfriend lost one of her grandmothers 1/4 ct diamond earrings, it is set in white gold. She inherited them from her grandmother after she passed so they are very important to her. We think the missing earring is either in the yard or in a parking lot with a lot of loose gravel making it impossible to spot amongst all the debris. To try to find the earring I just bought a new Minelab Equinox 800. I used the other earring she still has to test the detector. I kept passing the earring by the coil but it doesn't seem to pick up anything, likewise i also tried the earring on the ground in a plastic sandwich bag and got nothing. I did find other things in the yard tonight like some 1" round metal cap thing with the #2 stamped in it (no idea what it is but it registered between 21 - 24 on the detector) and some dark brown reddish rock that glistens a little in the light so it seems to be working. I am not sure if I do not have the settings right or if it is the wrong coil or wrong metal detector for what I am trying to do. Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.
  6. Hi guys, after 20 years Im going to get back into the hobby. I need help deciding on the VX3 or the Nox600. Money is no problem. Please dont convince me otherwise, it took me awhile to narrow this down. Iv enjoyed reading all your posts and stories. I will be searching land and water. Whites says their coils are fully submersible. Minelabs entire machine is submersible. I dont want to spend hours configuring settings. Which one detects deeper? Any constructive input in greatly appreciated. Thanks.
  7. I went out a few days ago with the plan to detect creek that had a 1800's mine in the drainage. Saw this when I got there I admit that probably wouldn't have stopped me but I couldn't even crawl in the creek bed much less swing a coil. So I decided to drive around to the top of the drainage and try and find the mine. Found it after hiking about half a mile and dropping down 800 feet. I felt good about that because I fail to find mines at least as often as I do find. The advent of Google earth has helped a ton. I really didn't know what to do with it after I found it though. I detected around where the tunnel used to be and dug bullet prices and junk, then dropped down to the dry creek and did the same before the long climb back out. We shoot way to much in Idaho. I find bullets everywhere I go. That's my typical wandering around outing. Its not surprising I don't find gold. I mostly went there because there were no current claims anywhere close. Hard to end up on anyone's claim if there are none!
  8. Me and my family bought a travel trailer and we're headed to Atlin, BC from our home on Kodiak Island. I'm trying to find more info on detecting the Atlin region, maybe someone knows of some friendly miners who wouldn't mind having a novice detectorist come in and mine? Any and all info is welcome!
  9. I am looking for suggestions for detecting at a construction site. A local village has sold some property that was once a baseball/football field to a store. Currently they have removed the top 4 inches of the site and has placed it along the perimeter of the job site, and is going to take out the next 12 inches of soil to bring in new soil in which to build on. I have permission to check what ever ground I want as long as I don't interfere with the construction, and then there is the rest of the property that will be needed to be gone over. The topsoil and grass that they have placed on the outer edge is 5 feet tall by about 6 feet wide and is in a lot of clumps. These areas is the outfield of the ball field and the main playing field for football that they have moved the soil on. So if anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear how to do this search. I have only been there for about 20 minutes and have found about 11 coins already. I would have stayed longer, but I didn't notice my battery level being on 1 bar. Valen
  10. Hi People when you see other detectorists, how much distance should one give each other? and 2nd question is, i have the minelab 15 pinpointer but it really struggles unless its all most on the target, it was a free pinpointer that came with the 600. Do i buy the minelab 35 or another brand? thanks
  11. I want to give a sincere "Thank You!" to Steve Herschbach, Reno Chris, Ivans Garage, Snake Jim, Mike Hillis, RickUK, AZBlackbird, and Sourdough Scott who all responded to my dumb questions. I tried to match up the requirements, as you told me, of a metal detector for gold nuggets and coins: * High frequency * Ground balance But I could not find a metal detector in my price range of ($300-$350) that met those two requirements I am back to square one and I guess I will not be purchasing a metal detector at this time. At least I now know what to look for and I am no longer completely ignorant. I am disappointed but I will get over it. I will recommend your forum to anyone. You guys spent your own time to help me. It doesn't get any better than that. Thank again. Professor Hester
  12. I have a Safari and have a few questions. Does wet grass have an affect on it? It is chirping like you threw tinfoil all over the ground, no matter what mode I am in.. No.2 sometimes when I use the pinpoint on the detector it will stay humming and the screen will show black no matter if it is over the target or not. Thank you.
  13. I’m waiting for my Anfibio multi to arrive and was curious if anyone has tried wireless earbuds with the Nokta detectors, I have an equinox 600 and use them sometimes, also an Avantree clip on transmitter with my Tony Eisenhower Waterproof headphones, it’s nice to have options, would also like to make an adapter so I can use Tony’s headphones underwater with the Anfibio.
  14. I was wondering if anyone on this site can help me setting up a Goldseeker 9000 VLF/TR Metal Detector. The detector was built here in Australia by the creators who are now Minelab [I think].Well, my dad [Deceased] bought the unit in 1983 but never got a chance to use it because he had a stroke, so my Mum just put it away in the shed,Well, about 6 months before my Mum passed away last year, she gave it to me after she found it cleaning out her shed. There are a few instructions with it but not very clear, so if anyone out there can help me out, it would be very much appreciated.I know it is a good machine, and I would like to use it and try it out.Thanking everyone in advance.
  15. The Nox manual suggests a minimum charger output of 1.7 amps for a charger but does not give a safe maximum output. I have chargers with 2.4 amps and 3.4 amps. I think the 2.4 amp charger is ok to use but concerned that the 3.4 amp charger might be too hot and damage the battery although it does charge the Nox much faster than the 2.4. I have just replace the earbuds I have been using because I used a charger greater than the 1 amp maximum recommended (note to self: always read the users manual even if you think you know what you’re doing). So, do you folks think the 3.4 amp charger is safe to use or not? John
  16. Well my Sand Shark is about finished so time to shop for a new dedicated (salt water ) beach detector. This machine will be dedicated to wet sand and/or surf only environment. Currently considering the ATX and TDIBH,, any suggestions / input would be appreciated.............Thanks! Rob

    Out Scouting

I have been doing some research, whether im on the right track or not is part of the learning curve i spose! Are reefs/leads connected? Are they related to each other? I went off in another direction today. Riding the dirt bike to cover ground quickly and efficiently. No detector. Interesting to see ‘scratchings’ between reefs! Am i right or wrong?
  18. I read a lot of old mining reports or literature relating to the 1850"s - 1870"s when most of the better gold was won. Sometimes I come across information that is really exciting as you know with cross referencing little was mentioned elsewhere about these finds (nuggets - big nuggets!!) So hopefully few people if any have prospected there. The only problem is these areas are often almost impenetrable. There either so steep you can barely walk or so over grown trying to get into the area is almost impossible. My biggest fear in these situations is not getting lost but getting bitten by a snake many miles from help. Some of the tiger snakes here even climb trees or lay in the ferns at head height. Which only leaves the winter time to venture in. however during winter the snow is likely going to be a problem. It's really a month or two window of opportunity each year were you have a chance at getting in. Anyway I've got one gully id like to try (many miles away from any gold workings/activity) but im pretty sure its overgrown with blackberries. I recon it would take a a good mile to even get into this gully from a nearby road. Not to mention hacking away at the blackberries with a machete. Ive located several areas like this and usually wait for a bush fire or controlled burn to clear the spot but sometimes this dosnt happen. It almost feels like one has to start looking in areas like this where most rational folk would dare to venture to find areas that haven't had lots of attention these days. Sometimes i wish id chosen another hobby, lol (Note: I carry a PLB, two way radio, mobile, snake bite kit, lighter, whistle, compass, 2 ltrs water, GPS & spare batteries and sometimes a lever action shotgun for wild dogs. I always communicate exactly where im going and have regular check ins.)
  19. Hello everyone. I'm new here and have been studying about this new hobby for a month or so. Yesterday i ordered/received my first ever detector the Equinox 800 and added the 6 in. coil. (i'm targeting Gold) I've lived in AZ all my life and currently live in Queen Creek. I'm looking to make my first hunt near Hayden, AZ, 75 miles SE of my home location. I also joined a prospecting club, The Roadrunner's Prospector's Club. My first hunt site will be on a RRPC claim. RRPC has 31 claims in this area. Below is a aerial view of what their claim areas look like. I'm hoping to head out there in a few weeks, It's going to be HOT!
  20. Hi guys, went out with a work mate and his ctx 3030 a few times on the beach. Was fun so decied to buy a detector, the 3030 is out of my range, so decided on the Minelab equinox 800 and a pinpointer. But now I have read a few things here, should I just get the 600 and pocket the $300? There are no gold areas where I live. Will be beach and parks only. I do like the Bluetooth tooth headphones. But the sales guy was good but , talking tones frequencies etc lost me. Hope to buy today thanks
  21. My detector has been having some problems lately. I have a teknetics liberator. The other night it was chirping periodically. In the morning it wouldn’t turn on. So I checked the connecting points and put a fresh battery in and the power button still didn’t work. When I put the battery in it would turn on automatically but then would turn off after a short time. Has anyone ever had experiences fixing this?
  22. I got this manual at a swap meet in Quartzsite, Arizona. It's a manual written by Ben Thompson, who placer mined a lot in Northern Nevada/ Mill City area. He describes. Terry T bones in 90's that found a 27 ounce nugget, and killed by a train. He also talks about Burns Bros truck stop, and Dick who worked there also found a 24 ounce nugget near where Terry found his (Big Easy). Enclosing pic if his book. Dave
  23. In FNQ Australia, there are a number of properties you can go on & detect for gold. Most places are pay to detect & are well set up for camping with designated areas set aside for metal detecting, if you are fortunate enough to have access to private leases & cattle stations with gold bearing country even better again. Up until today, I had access to one of these private cattle stations to prospect on. Unfortunately I no longer have access, this is due to the fact there are still people doing the wrong thing while on these properties. The rubbish left behind at camp sites and open detector holes for cattle to break legs in is out of control. On top of that you got fence jumpers & poachers running a muck too. This is causing huge issues for for graziers forcing them to close the gates to everyone & in most cases getting access now, is nearly impossible. I can't express in words how disappointing this is for us guys & girls who are doing the right thing, only to be told you can't detect at your favourite spot anymore because of w#%kers ruining it for everyone. So the quest for a new spot starts again.... Take only gold and memories & leave only foot prints. So we will all have somewhere to look for gold in the future!
