Slim Pickin's But Still Fun (relics)

I thought today would be a much better day than it was. Invited Chase down to hunt the old 1700s farm in town. The weather was supposed to cooperate, but we ended up with a strong wind all day and it was colder than it should have been.

We searched this field for a while, dug some buttons and odd relics, Chase got the only coins of the day, maybe he will post them. We decided to do some scouting of the "Green field" near the house, and really all I dug was a very old watch key. These fields are rather large, but only have small concentrated areas where the good stuff can be found.

Chase brought his Deus 2 and I had my Equinox with the 10x5. Our "mission" was to see how the EMI coming from this cell tower would affect the Deus vs. the Equinox. While we were there some people were climbing the tower and hauling stuff up there. Yikes.

I don't mind telling you I was impressed, Chase had no problem with the D2, and I was getting totally hammered. I had to go to 15kHz to silence the detector, so I cranked up sensitivity up and lowered recovery speed to compensate for not using multi. I did switch to it from time to time for the iron bias to check some targets. Despite that I dug a ton of trash:

Everything from aluminum to bullets and shot, harmonica reeds and even an old spark plug. ?

Finds for me were scant but worth showing:

I'll have to break some of them down. Don't know what the brass fork-looking thing is, or the pewter thing below it. Got 3 buttons, a watch key, and one of my most unusual finds, what I think is a belt buckle. It was totally pretzeled but I was able to make out the lettering on the back. It says England "The Martin" Patented. It has lobes that had rings on them, a couple still do.

The front is very ornate. It is stamped and possibly was gilded, I'm thinking late 1800s. It was found in an area where an old house stood.

Next is a really fancy two piece button also found in that area:

The back had marks but they are obliterated. 

It's a flatter two piece, possibly older?

Got one plain flat button, and one really small one that turned out to have a pattern as well:

Last piece is the watch key I found in the green field.

Sure could have used the Deus today to find this stuff, but you can tweak the Equinox to withstand most bad environments. ? It was good to have company and some guidance!

Nice old relics.  The brass fork thing looks like the inner part to a shoe buckle.

Thanks Badger! Neither of us could figure it out, I was hoping an experienced relic hunter would chime in. ? It's pretty thick and heavy.

The belt buckle is pretty interesting, looks like they had a bit of history to them. Lucky you got some thawed grounds to dig!

Thanks. ? The ground has never really frozen thankfully. It is drying up though, today's digging was a bit more difficult. Next week we're looking at a lot of rain.

This place dates back to the 1640s, the house was built about 1740. It's one of the older surviving buildings in the area. We've hit this farm pretty hard, but there's more to find. There was another house on the field that disappeared in the 1940s, I'm trying to find out who/what was there. Chase dug a 1650s half real here, I've found two seateds. Not much silver but lots of buttons. Also lots of lead and shotgun shells ?

Nice! Have you thought about a 2 Box deep seeker detector to bottle and relic hunt/locate the old privies ? I highly recommend it! I have found a ton of stuff over the years with my Fisher Gemini 3. Usually not much trash, occasional farming implements.

Heh, I think I'd gain the interest of the local historical society and various other entities if I was waving something like that around... I think I'll stick to top trolling for the time being. I'm more inclined to go Deus 2, for a geezer like myself that is the next step in avoiding joint issues. ?

I'm also contemplating adding an older detector like a Tesoro with a concentric. Kinda like how I've found tube amplifiers to be superior to my ears than solid state. ?
