Discrimination Question

Can someone explain discrimination on the Deus 2.   Why is factory setting at 10, 6.4, etc.  VDI number 30 on the Deus seems to match the Equinox at 0 ( I think). So why not set the discrimination to 30 on the Deus? Thanks

it is my "feeling" that higher disc loses depth. I do dislike how XP wastes all those lower TID's and jams them together at the higher ones. You could notch out up to 30 if you want and it won't cause dept loss if that helps ya.

The higher the discrimination setting the greater number of targets will register as ferrous.   If for example you set the discrim at 7, targets'TDI that range from 7 or below will  be reported as "iron."

Unlike other detectors Deus only blocks the audio which doesn't affect depth. The only setting on the Deus II that will affect depth is the Reactivity setting. This determines how long the coil stays on between targets.

The D2’s discrimination is similar to the ATPro’s in that it has a adjustable tone break on the size of the iron you want to disc out, or rather it has broad iron range. Let’s say your working on a site that has a lot of a specific size nail(s). You can adjust that broad iron disc just to point to where it breaks that specific iron up (tone break), not totally out, or whatever you prefer.

It doesn’t work like that in full tones.  See this thread:

A lot of times, a good target next to a small ferrous target can bring the VDI down.
 

 Example…a coin or old button that may read 7x-9x on its own, but next to an old iron nail it may read a solid 8 or 9.  If you run the discrimination up past the 6.8 range in Gen, and the 3 fast modes, you may miss a good target amongst iron if you’re just going by VDI alone.  (Park and Deep HC read a little higher so they could be bumped up a bit).  
 

vDI is a wonderful thing, but in iron sound is very important.  As is your willingness to dig!

Just to clarify, disc doesn't just block audio as it is a true signal processing filter and too much can adversely affect performance (e.g., depth, target masking/separation), but notch is an audio only filter and has no impact on detector signal processing performance.  Similar to disc, the silencer and bottlecap filters can be helpful but if set too high can adversely affect performance.

True.  And judiscious use of discrimination on Deus 2 can help mitigate this effect.

True.  But these other tools have their place when you perhaps have one shot at a site and a lot of ground to cover, need to keep the site from looking like a carpet bomb attack, are getting pounded by surf, or just need to preserve your sanity.

If you have the luxury of time and can dig indiscriminately and grid, digging it all is your best bet and moves masking junk out of the way.  Hard work, but it can pay off big.  

Metal detecting at its core is about managing tradeoffs becaause no detector gives you perfect 20-20 vision as to what's in the ground.  There are no real short cut alternatives to hard work fo pr success, only incredible luck.
