kac
Bottom center piece of brass looks like remnants to a hurricane lamp? Permission hunts are fun, good chance to find something that has a bit of history or story behind it.
JCR
The thin brass pieces are from the fuel reservoir holder of a coal oil table lamp. It has crenellated/ribbed sides for a slight friction fit with the fuel tank that the burner assembly screwed onto.

Kind of big for a trace chain. I wouldn't be surprised if it came from South Carolina after the War with the rest of the family. It is definitely older than the house site. Howdy JCR I'm not trying to cut in line so to speak and hijack your interesting post here but after reading your description about the chain and hook and looking a little closer I couldn't resist.I dug this very similar one some months ago it's not as early as yours IMO.Maybe 1870's or 80's? It's really comforting to know that I am not the only iron head on this forum that packs this stuff home. Doc B
JCR
Very, very similar. Yours has heavier chain. Something that was once so universally common is now a treasure or junk. I like treasure. Thanks for posting.
