I can say I have never dug a quarter cent before, but here is my first cut half cent, 1835. Right next to the old pump well, like 6 inches from the platform and only a couple inches down. Most of the old coins have been 8 to 10 inches deep. In settled areas they were whatever was considered normal. In frontier areas prices were much higher.
