Popular Post Lost Scout
Life happened and I haven't been able to get out detecting for quite a while. But managed an overnight trip down to Riggins and got out of the snow for two days. It's been a very warm and dry winter so far and the temps on the river were in fifties. Just bought a new/used travel trailer and we wanted to give it a test run before taking a longer trip. And throwing in some time detecting would be great! Im not sure which topic to post this kind of trip under. It's a very general kind of hunt. Coins, jewelry, junk, fishing gear and gold in the river is all possible. We were happy just swinging an electric stick over the dirt and rocks. The scenery and geology here is amazing! A few buckets of trash not included in the pics. Unfortunately inherent in this area are camp fires and a lot of beer drinking. That equals the redneck aluminum nuggets that ID from 5 to 35. Did find a cheap silver ring but no gold yet. 17 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/25245-ancient-salmon-river-aluminum-nuggets/ Share on other sites

Valens Legacy
Sounds and looks like you had a great time out there. Wish you could have found some gold, but there is always tomorrow. Good luck on your next outing and stay safe out there. 2 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/25245-ancient-salmon-river-aluminum-nuggets/#findComment-266412 Share on other sites
strick
Thanks for sharing...back in my younger days we used to hire a bush pilot (out of Challis) to fly us to a bench on the middle fork of the salmon river he'd drop us off for a week while we hunted then fly back and get us. Beautiful place up there lots of memories..thanks for the pics.. strick Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/25245-ancient-salmon-river-aluminum-nuggets/#findComment-266439 Share on other sites
Lost Scout
This spot is just up from Riggins but below the wilderness boundary. I've flown into and hunted on the Middle Fork as well. Too bad a guy can't metal detect there. Some of the grandfathered homesteads would give up some some relics but I haven't pursued that. Be a little expensive flying in.? 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/25245-ancient-salmon-river-aluminum-nuggets/#findComment-266489 Share on other sites
kac
Nice area and very cool ring. Aluminum looks like slag, get lots of that where people toss their cans in camp fires. Probably among the most annoying trash to try to pull good targets from but also good sign that people sat around drinking and possibly losing good stuff. Definitely a good spot to pick through with a small coil. 4 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/25245-ancient-salmon-river-aluminum-nuggets/#findComment-266524 Share on other sites

HardPack
Who remembers Jack O’Connor, who wrote for the magazine Outdoor Life. His stories of elk hunts in the Sawtooth; and his 270 pre-64 Winchester Model 70. Wonder if the mail boat still makes the run up the Salmon. 1 Link to comment https://www.detectorprospector.com/topic/25245-ancient-salmon-river-aluminum-nuggets/#findComment-267831 Share on other sites
