  1. If you clean it ....it will show badly as be worthless except to complete a set maybe. Most collectors would give you more as is. If you clean it wrong it could turn fakish red and almost brittle looking. Leave as is and put a touch of mineral OIL on it. Which is a goo preserver on any copper.
  2. You are correct Chase.... now my question.... do you think it DID NOT noise cancel if you have to hit it again meaning it stays on the current setting?
  3. Noise cancel is the only one i have to double press..... but yes.
  4. Most detectors use filters....... which if the coil is moving to fast will filter out weak targets. Used to be 2 and 4 filters..... may be higher now days. The larger the coil the more material the machine has to process as well.....thus the faster you go the less it sees. 6 is a pretty FAST recovery..... that beep is quick if it comes thru and sometimes ya just miss near targets that a slower recovery of 4 might not. Sweep speed always matters IMO. Might try buring several targets in a line at different depth and distances from each other.... then swing between target to see what you are missing. Ive found if im not getting a whole lot .... try something different....... slow down and NOT cover so much beach that day.
  5. I agree Chase..... for water hunting add an enclosed coil and thinner lower shaft. It was a huge leap having the ability to change phones and coils..... now if we just had coils to match the modes.
  6. It might sell....but not while most have a warranty. This doesn’t appear to be a violation of the depth....and a small percentage at best would use it deeper.
  7. Ive also read issues with down loading..... that could i guess contribute to how the programs act. Someone using the old program switching to the new .... hopefully tried reloading it again if it seemed out of whack.
  8. 1 and 2 likely arent shots sinkers.... they tend to come in more around the 4 to 6 range. That range seems to be more foil/can slaw bits.
  9. Steve..... of course im the one who does lol. I found in the wet sand the new version tended to change the TIDs more often. The older version seems to pick up less bottle caps.... in the water especially. The changes made didnt really affect what i was looking for ..... gold. I did test both on a couple hundred pieces of gold......i didnt find a difference in depth when air testing. It doesnt seem to be a good on coins on edge..... but is fair with rings on edge depending on which angle. I still loose to many targets in the hole...... but both programs seemed to do that. I never tested this with the NEW program..... but the old at say 25 on a quarter ....or can... seems to make sizing difficult. Im sure a good bit of it could be .... what you started out on and learned more than real differences..... AND of course im NOT dirt hunting which is a whole different ball game.
  10. Have you ever dealt with hot rocks/big iron? Most detectors if you run to much sensitivity will pick those up near the surface because of minerals/iron/rust in them. Try putting the targets from - to + in a circle......there is a point where targets go from say - (iron) to + (large can). If you have a rusty large piece of iron or hot rock.... they tend to JUMP into that very high digital range..... which is called wrap around (going from - to a + digit). Most detectors do it ...... but the Nox tends to do it jumping in the LOW positive end as opposed to the high. The Nox tends to pick up a lot of surface minerals.... mostly bits of iron/black sand/hot rocks causing falsing in the say +2 to +6 digit range. IF you set that second bin wrong... you are going to waste a lot more time checking false signals because you have but one tone giving your information.... a dig it all tone. 50 tones can spread out those tones giving you a little more information. Hopefully i explained that somewhat right lol.
  11. I think a lot of us miss pitch hold.... which gave us longer sounds on targets. I cant run 7 on a recovery speed here.... ive found the tones are just to short... and if i have selected the wrong pitch or target volume i can completely miss near targets. I have no problem in moving water knee deep either...... but i believe hes referring to the oat meal area..... fluffy soft sand where black sand and minerals or tiny flakes accumulate...... right there at that low tide line surf... where its pulling your coil going back out.
  12. Looks like Tony Hunts shaft..... i believe Keith Leppart (ML repairs) carries them as does Tony Hunt in the UK. The guy on free-bay..... may be from SERIOUS DETECTING..... another who carries them. Havent been here in the states long enough for many reviews..... someone mentioned they were a tad heavier than some of the other CF ones out there now.
  13. What a find......Gold coin is on everyones bucket list...... but that ones in crazy nice condition as well. That thing would be my crown jewel. Congrats to him.
  14. I did a little concentrated hunting in the wash yesterday just to see. We dont have much mineralization here....... but i kind of get it. In the wash the sand has a lot more air gap especially as the water moves in and out..... making the sand of course soft/fluffy. Black sand and iron tend to concentrate there as well. This machine seems to be sensitive to really light up those minerals/iron in that area as they MOVE with the water. So i can see how targets might just disappear as the coil is overwhelmed with the sand AND salt water. Much like targets that disappear in the hole.
  15. Ive not played around enough with 2 tones...... is there a way to adjust the HIGH tone? I turned it on briefly the other day..... and the high tone appears to be set at 25 volume. Id prefer something in the range of 13. That high of a tone makes things seem SMALLER or all the same size..... its difficult to tell a quarter from a can lid deep.
  16. Have you considered ...... ear buds and just putting some of the high quality noise protectors over them?
  17. Only issue i could see is...... yes constant draining..... but more movement of the sand in the cover as well. The machine tends to kind of balance out sand NOT moving better than say ..... Explorers do.... but if its moving until it gets out of a hole will it pick it up and what affect might that have? If water is going in those holes as you swing...... will it push the cover away from the coil more..... causing a bit more drag wand when scraping the bottom..... a bit more sand?
  18. Ive not really had that issue..... but it could be similar to how targets disappear in the hole. The digits for me on the new program was a little screwy...... but location really seems to make the difference with the Nox and how you run it or how it works. One suit may not fit everyone.
  19. Dave...... have you tried swapping program? Im using the old program and really cant say i notice targets are disappearing in the surf..... at least not here. There of course is a build up of the gray sand that can drive a lot of detectors a little nuts. IF i find it an issue ill turn and run West to East in a zig zag style...... kind of running with the grain.
  20. Recovery speed...... i run at 4. 3 and below gives a unique sound from the salt water...... run it to fast along the bottom and you notice it especially with you coil slightly tilted. It seems to be that same SWOOCH most detector give like the Xcal in PP when the water moves over the coil. 4 doesnt..... i assume because it give a bit shorter tone. You arent going to silence this machine completely...... its sensitive. A lot of that falsing i jumping to those lower digits so even disc mode .... unless you want to disc 1-6 is going to help. The hotter you run the more it picks up shallow surface minerals/and salt in the sand out there. The machine you are comparing it to is a very refine machine ..... even in the water.... thus the $2400 price tag. You have to realize ... salt setting... reduced power in Beach 2... and turning things down a LOT makes the machine run smooth...... but may be a huge disadvantage. What i did to try and silence it here is..... RS4, IB 2, 19 sensitivity (you may have more minerals than us), turned off threshold, turn down iron volume to 2...... i run AM, but disc would reduce iron more even. I also run 50 tones..... which i prefer. LESS tones might help....... but the key seems to be getting it to a tolerable level...... and still pick out the weak targets without loosing a lot of depth.
  21. Ray....do you use it in Salt water? It harsh on everything.
  22. The only way to properly do the silicon thing is ....... FILL the cover with it then connect it to the coil and remove the excess. Otherwise if you are SALT WATER hunting silicon easily comes loose enough to get sand in..... UNLESS you use RTV. Its a little better and sticker.
  23. I dont beleive the PRODUCT will remain long in the cover Dave..... But i think my bigger concern is .... over time could those hole stretch the cover...or as it moves create drag as water enters those holes? On the CTX..... those cross bars dont hold the cover properly...... works just like a rudder creating more drag..... like there isnt enough with that huge shaft already.
  24. Two tone works well, but im not a fan of the 25 setting..... at least not for my ears. Some where around 13 seems to catch me...... and for some odd reason on say a quarter or a can...... it doesnt quit size the target properly being that high. Another consideration is ...... if you are looking for gold.....id go with a disc pattern. A whole lot less targets to check in two tones. Once that box is under....... you are looking for a target first and for most. Patterns can be a great time saver if you know what you want to find. Choosing two tones you have to realize ..... any falsing will come in both those tones. Thats why i like AM and multi tones..... it has a tenancy to move iron back to the iron range. As far as why not single tone........ if you go that way you best be using disc because i can tell you there is a lot of iron out there even when nothing else is........ got to love bobbie pins and bottle caps.
  25. Daniel....... ive been testing those two machines as well. One thing i can tell you on a salt water beach ........ maybe running the trough N to S isnt the best way to get the deeper gold. It might net you a ring on its side thats been pushed up against the rise because you get more of the ring. But it tends to see more of the black sand veins........ thus reducing a bit of depth and giving just enough chatter on the slop to miss a deep one. It does much better going WITH the grain....... E to W in a grid. I buried a 21 gram 10k ring in the very wet sand at 16 inches the Nox didnt see the ring going N to S. But might get it E to W. IF the Nox gets a target it does give a bit better TID. What i noticed about the MDT....... i hunt in AM i dont like all the ping pongs of disc. The Nox has better TID IF the target is in depth range...... BUT the MDT will tell you there is a target there better. I noticed something today when i pulled a cross and was just digging GOLD targets...... 13 and below digits....... in AM i got a BANG over that cross.... a HARD bang with a solid 4 just want i expected for a cross. BUT i got thinking...... it was just a really hard BANG just like you get off a bottle cap...... which got me thinking........ its just saying TARGET TARGET not giving me a crappy signal that another machine might on a cross with a lot of tones does. Some of those tiny aluminum rivits that fall thru the scoop....... read high with the MDT so i dont go chasing them. So ..... im looking for DEEPER targets with the MDT ...... and in a pretty narrow window. You have to make more decisions than me working in fresh water with the Nox. BUT..... i like both machines for what they do.
