  1. Maybe a new Monumental Nugget? Sierra County Historical Society | Monumental Nugget (sierracountyhistory.org) https://www.geologyin.com/2018/02/the-largest-gold-nugget-ever-found-in.html
  2. Come on Reg. Those frozen water bottles are for keeping the beer cold!
  3. When I become a 'land hunter' rather than a beach hunter (95%) I normally use a default program like Park 1 or Field 1 and think they are just great with my 800. On a few occasions I'll tweak Gold 1.
  4. Did you find the ring on the beach where the guy lost it? I would imagine a ring that heavy would not travel too far but beaches and storms can do strange things. Thanks for the posting and the lookup. I would hope that Aggies would have another 'tradition' of paying a hefty return/finders fee so that it would encourage more of their frequently lost rings to be returned.
  5. I've been for a couple of days and I would go back if I lived closer. It is a really nice State Park. The staff is friendly and they have the information you need to be successful. We didn't find any diamonds on our trip but you have to train your eyes to the task. The most difficult part about going is getting the accommodations near the park. If you already live there and it is a day trip for you then I would go often, especially after it rains.
  6. Does it matter how 'powerful' your phone is in order to run optimally? Better phone = better performance?
  7. One day we're going to have a really smart chip in a detector. Until then we can read about some of the progress of the chips in phones and other applications. This article is about a chip in a Google Pixel phone. It doesn't need an internet connection to do its machine learning tricks. It adapts/learns on its own they say. It can take a blurry picture and make it clear. Isn't that what we want to happen to our detector sounds? I think some of us can live with fuzzy better than others. How Google Tensor Helps Google Pixel Phones Do More Look at magic eraser. It removes unwanted images in your photos. This makes me think of noise cancelling headphones or maybe a signal processing device which has nothing to do with the way the detector 'works.' Magic Eraser & Photo Unblur fix your photos on Pixel - Google Store Depleted detecting sites ... watch out!
  8. I would say that he maximizes his recovery speed to prevent masking by the high mineralization. The faster speed sometimes lets me see/hear targets that are unheard at a lower speed. Good targets can be more pronounced at a lower recovery speed and longer but it really is a trade off as you say with sensitivity level AND coil swing speed. If you are cruising along and you catch a bit of a target then you come back and interrogate it. If it is a target that you are looking for then these clues should recalibrate your thinking so you can zero in on that layer, area or line if you are on a beach. It is a subject I've been commenting on ever since I got my 800. I'll look up a couple of threads. Here is one:
  9. I have a new sales line ... Test, TEST, TEST You have to buy one of the new detectors to TEST for yourself! You can't trust those videos. Then COMPARE to the other detectors you have or will buy from me. (I smell a multiple sale here.) Buy one now before your fellow detectorists get the advantage on you.
  10. Not all copper coins are pennies. One version of this story said the coins were rusted. I don't think so but maybe it is a matter of translation. Another version of the story I read said that the detectorist had just bought a new detector. I wonder which one. It probably wouldn't make much difference considering the size of the hoard. 17th-century hoard brimming with 1,000 coins discovered in Poland | Live Science
  11. You are buying for your daughter. How often do you see her? Is there any place where you can meet up and 'try' a couple of the detectors before you buy so she can get the feel of it. She'll learn the software in due time. After you get hers then he will probably buy one of his own based upon his use of hers and his specific interests. As I said on another thread about my next purchase it depends on time, location and then detector model which would include pricing. You've told us the locations where they can use the detector which are varied so multi-function seems best. How much time do they have? If the detector is too simple and 'lite' then they may outgrow it. I've not used a Legend but everyone says it is close to the 800 that I use. It will take a user a few hundred hours to know the difference. That means she has to use it and that could just be a feel sort of choice for her. Good luck. It will probably be the first of many for them.
  12. Work your way slowly into a new scoop that can dig a plug that weighs more than twice as much as your old scoop. I use my big scoop rarely and when I do I'm sore and potentially 'hurt' by the strain on my rarely used muscles. It is one thing for a scoop to be big and light and another to get a full scoop of wet sand and lift it. I've gotten hand strain and forearm strain by digging to much and too fast. Half scoop if necessary. A full scoop will seem like you are locked on a tree root.
  13. That's hearing it from one salesman to another. But ... you need to learn how to sell that new chip, that new screen, those new features all over again. The engineering department is depending on you to keep their jobs. I know you like to sell The Dream but we've learned a lot from selling computers with more speed over the years so get back to it. Come to think of it, maybe this job is just too big for dealers. We'll give all the units over to the Big Box Stores instead.
  14. Gerry, Gerry, Gerry, Tell it like it is. Sell the new detector and people will get lucky believing that there is still gold in a hammered location. To hell with technique and understanding. You're a dealer, get with the program! haha
  15. It would take a different marketing vision to keep the Axiom software platform current even after coming out with new hardware at some point in the future. Many of the old pre internet detectors could be sent off and modified for better performance. I have a friend who has the hottest GB2 you can get. That can't really be updated. I guess you could say that all of the Minelabs through the 5000 could not be updated with software fixes. Not being a detector historian, was the 3030 the first Minelab that used an internet connection? I'm still disappointed in them for dropping the ball on downloading programs and find locations to be shared with the 7000 but those connections didn't affect the performance. I would consider paying for a subscription type of detector that allowed me to download different programs or aps that would work with my hardware. I know at some point in the future I would have to get new hardware that could handle the more robust programs of the future.
  16. I should mention that I have a 7000 also and not just a 5000. Something else has come to mind since I read Kevin Hoagland's Axiom review. He mentions at the end that the Axiom is updateable. Does that make a difference? It could if it is put into practice differently than Minelab. Minelab has the ability to update many of its models but they don't. It seems that Nokta updates often on some of its models. They also come out with new models. What if Garrett were to keep their flagship model Axiom current with software updates even after the warranty period? I would think this would make the resale value higher if you told someone it is current. If an Axiom held value in addition to 'paying for itself' then this would help my buying decision.
  17. I have the new issue of the GPAA Gold Prospectors and Kevin doesn't disappoint. He has a thorough review (9 pages) where he describes features and how he took it through the paces. He describes a couple of new technologies and ends up with a very favorable impression of the detector. One of the things he particularly favors is Tone Control. You have to hear it before you can find it! I don't know how to find the review online. If someone finds it please link it.
  18. Let's mention some numbers on this thread. What can I get for my 5000 right now? What if I throw in 5-6 coils? How much will it cost to ship all that to someone who would pay the highest price on eBay? What would a dealer give me for a trade in on an Axiom? These numbers can influence a decision more than performance so I stick with my 5000 that I rarely use but then how much would I use a new Axiom? Will it make more time in my schedule to go to placers that still have gold? My priorities right now in order are time, location and detector for nugget hunting. If I had the time and location, I'd already have the Axiom and keep the 5000!
  19. Found a nice 15 g silver necklace. It is a bit delicate so I'm surprised it came out in one piece. Before cleaning After several cycles of baking soda, salt, thick aluminum min-pie tin.
  20. Some targets aren't hidden and aren't masked. They just need to be found with any level of detector including the eyes as in the case of sunbakers!
  21. I keep thinking there has to be some 'software magic' still to come. I'm primarily a Nox 800 user at present. When I use the Field 2 on dry sand walking to my wet beach it hits on targets hard and deep. I still find a bit of jewelry with it there even though it has been detected a lot. If I leave the Nox in Field 2 and walk to the wet sand, I simply can't tune it. I can't hear targets making adjustments to speed, balance and sensitivity. If I switch to Beach 1 it is magically a different detector. The hardware has not changed but the response is useable rather than unusable. A set program mode has overcome the shortcomings of the other program. Can this happen on a detector level adjustment where one detector is superior to another? Some combination of hardware and software is going to be ideal for our own settings. How much of this is 'automatic' vs manual becomes a present and future question. Is there a magic software to be developed or already developed that can be a quantum leap for the present hardware technology similar to the jump between Field 2 and Beach 1? That company would surely corner the market. Would they save it for a future detector? Bring it out now is the inventor and investors cry. As targets get removed more and more from all sites and placers, we are left to wonder how good the new crop of detectors would be on virgin locations. Many of the previous detectors were pretty darn good to remove all the targets before we come in with a new detector. If you had a choice of detector on a virgin site, which one would you choose? Misses will always be part of the hobby. You simply can't get it all but a seriously depleted site removes the clues and the targets and a new detectorist may never know the sheer quantity of relics and targets previously found. Many of us who find junk find other's treasure.

  23. That is a great result for today. I went to a not so normal beach this morning and there were 5 other guys already there. Maybe you were one of them? haha I don't like crowds so I went to a beach without anyone. I ended up with 5 cheap rings which were fun but I knew conditions were right for better. You scored an ouncer as they say in nugget hunting. I don't think I've joined the ouncer jewelry club but I have a couple of entries in the ouncer nugget club. WTG
