  1. The reason I ask is because a number of the guys in our club have 800's. When we go on hunts there have been times I'll hit a target and they'll want to listen to it. Many times they don't hear it or maybe just barely with theirs My machine is just out of warranty now and I'm reluctant to get a different one for that reason. I've heard stories about machines being hotter than others or...just maybe better? Any thoughts on this? Thanks!
  2. Hello, Anyone try Andy Sabisch coin setting on the Nox? What I would like to understand is I see there is offerings for the 800, but will they also work on the 600? Obviously I swing the 600, and coming from the Etrac using his settings, just wanted to make sure. I know the factory ones are good, but everything needs tweaked at one time or another. Thanks for any and all feedback. BTW, I am not new to MD, just to the Nox 600.
  3. I hunt my saltwater beaches in the Beach 2 mode with the factory settings for wet and water hunting as well as the dry sand. We really don't have much iron around the beach and it's also not trashy. I am going to experiment with lowering the recovery speed and iron bias just to see what difference in depth/detection it makes. Do any of you adjust RS and IB down in Beach modes and if you do, what differences have you noted?
  4. Hey folks! Unlike many of you more seasoned folks, I'm still trying to learn when to ignore iron tones and when to dig. I was exploring the land behind what I knew once belonged to a northern Virginia farmhouse back in the 1930s and heard a nice iron tone that I felt was worth looking into. Lo and behold, an incredibly well rusted cast iron piggy bank. Following some electrolysis and wire brushing I find it to be pretty presentable. I'm unsure of the age, but based on some research I'm guessing circa 1900s. Cheers!
  5. I haven't heard Steve H. give his opinion on approximately when the EQ800 might be "upgraded". I know it's only speculation but I'm trying to see how long the wait might be, over a year shorter, longer? I wish to buy one but after reading all the posts about people sending EQ's back 3 times and 6 inch coils multiple times etc., I think it would be prudent of me to wait for another "iteration" of the EQ, IF it is not going to be long (1 year or more). Thoughts? Also thoughts on the EQ800 as a "gold detector" for "small" gold. I bought quite a few years ago a Nokta Fors because it was recommended as an "all around" detector by Steve and I was splitting my time beach hunting and desert prospecting. It, the Nokta did/does find small gold if conditions are "right" such as the gold being about a size 12 or +20 classified size, shallow depth and laying flat or "broadside up. Would the EQ800 do better than this in you're opinions in "mineralized SoCal ground? Feedback greatly appreciated!
  6. So I’ve been considering a Vanquish model as either a backup or primary to my Equinox 600 to fill in coil size with 10x7 between my 11” and 6”. Also perhaps to achieve a little better ergonomics for most of my detecting and then use the Nox for more detailed work when needed. I like the price and simplicity of the 340 but I also like some of the extras of the 540 and mainly 5 tones which is what I most regularly run on my 600. Studying the manuals a bit for details, it is not really that simple as the tone breaks, whether 3 or 5 tones, vary between detectors and even within the modes. So it still won’t be “exactly” like my 600 even if I choose a 540 in regards to 5 tones or 3 tones. The 3 tones is even different between the 340 and 440. So I vkeep going back to simplicity and price of the 340 and I even get the coil I want. Curious on thoughts from others considering same or actual experience and why your selection? Also, I thought it was interesting that for a detector that seems to be more global, the Vanquish makes the coin modes favor the US coins? Am I wrong? Even with the 600 you might be limited on this as I believe only the first tone break is adjustable?
  7. I’m wondering which Equinox ( 600 or 800 ) would be the better for my use for what I do here in So Calif... mostly Beaches....any thoughts ? ?
  8. Do you use the Fe setting, F2 setting, both, or none? Follow up posts explaining your poll vote will provide important information. I'd ask people make a little extra effort on this one. The poll is for your benefit. Thanks.
  9. Finally got a good day to go out in the farm, the last two were pretty miserable. It was another day to find lots of tacks and buckshot, unfortunately the tacks fall in the numeric range of the nicer buttons, and the buckshot tends to come up like tombacs, so I pretty much have to dig 'em all. 😵 See my first pic for all the trash! I don't usually bother to show it but y'all have to see the amount of buckshot, bullets and tacks I dig in a day. 😀 Much mention has been made of the FE and F2 settings on the Equinox, so I decided to give F2 a shot since I've been running the detector in FE/0 with Field 2, and finding that I'm wasting a bit of time inquiring targets that turn out to be heavy or really rusty iron. I thought from reading a bit that I could try F2/2 for a bit hoping it would help. Didn't go to 3 or 1. After I dug the nails and the large nut in the bottom picture, I changed the settings. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but F2 seems to "tighten up" iron, causing it to not register as much in the 9+ range. While maybe a couple of the iron finds still falsed, for the most part a quick change of sweep direction turned the whole signal to iron. Found the tombac almost immediately, they usually give a small iron sound because of the iron shank or remnant but this time it was a solid 7. For the rest of the day I didn't dig a single piece of iron! Now they need an update with a Pb setting... 🤔 😀 The smaller button next to the tombac (neither are larger than a dime) says "PLATED" on it, and the little tag is odd, "xed fe" and the number 61 are stamped on it. The elongated bullet seems to have a 2 on it! I find a LOT of buckle fragments.
  10. I am seeing some rumors on other forums that the Equinox price will increase in February. Maybe this is just nay sayer rumors or possibly some misunderstanding about holiday deals and bundled deals ending on January 31st.........
  11. I urge everyone to answer the poll questions with as much detail as you can provide. Thoughtful responses only please. Thanks. https://www.detectorprospector.com/forums/forum/53-minelab-equinox-forum/

  14. “I think you will like the news coming out next week with coil selection for the Equinox” Could it be? Fingers crossed!!
  15. Anyone who spends much time comparing targets with a Equinox and a Vanquish knows that a Vanquish will hit most targets an Equinox will hit. The performance is closer than people may want to imagine for most normal metal detecting, making Vanquish a genuine value. Vanquish came out with a different set of coils than the Equinox, to the chagrin of many Equinox owners, since they are not compatible. What is interesting is that the Vanquish coils are quite a bit less expensive, even in cases where they are physically larger than the Equinox coils. Part of this may be the windings and tolerances possibly being different. Vanquish coils seem thinner and lighter, and being able to keep the price down on them is critical to keeping the price of the detector down also. However, it is a mistake to think retail price has anything more than a loose connection to manufacturing cost. The rule is charge what the market will bear. And true story for anyone that wants to bother with the research - accessory items for expensive detectors often cost a lot more than the same accessories for lower price detectors. This is because most people who spend a lot on a detector are willing to spend more on accessories. Just ask any car dealer who sells both inexpensive and expensive cars. So while I do not know the exact details, the fact is Vanquish coils sell for les because they have to. Nobody is going to buy an accessory coil if it sells for as much as the detector itself. This adds to the value proposition however. Not only does a Vanquish get very close to Equinox performance for a lot lower price, but the accessory coils can be had for quite a bit less. I kind of get now why Minelab did not make a set of these coils for Equinox. Would Equinox owners be willing to pay about $100 more for the same coils across the board (even though they would be different coils)? People will say, no, just sell me the coils for the Equinox at the same price. But Minelab can't do that - it undermines the Equinox detector and accessory price structure. If that seems unfair, let me remind people the 11" round coil for the CTX 3030 sells for $349, a good $120 more than the 11" coil for Equinox! Minelab may have decided to simply avoid that can of worms by keeping the lines completely separate and distinct as far as the coils go.
  16. 2 metal detectors under 1000$€£ Both have won many compliments and have been talked a lot since they were released in the market! Which one would YOU choose...? 🤔
  17. Got a break in the weather today, it has rained for the past two. The last two days before it rained I found very little, I thought the field was "drying up". Today I realized why - it had been a week or more since it rained, so I think the ground lost conductance - it dried up! I should probably revisit my last couple of grid walking days. I have been averaging 3-4 buttons a day, and today was no exception. I also find a lot of shoe buckle parts. There was a lot of foot traffic here from the 1700s on, I am trying to find out why. Also learned today to follow more faint signals, especially those that go up in tone which may or may not give an initial VDI. I am using field 2, 50 tones with the horseshoe on. I found the large ornate piece about 12" down, one of the deepest holes I have dug. It started out as a faint 13, and ended up a solid 19. Same with the 1884 Indian head, it was faint probably due to being on edge. The rising tone above all prompted me to dig. The smallest button is stamped GILT off center and appears to have some of its plating still. It was a solid 14, the same VDI my wedding ring gives. The biggest mystery is the heavily corroded button, it has lettering on it, and shows some brass or gilt, but it is so far unreadable. Fun day and a great learning experience! There were hunters all around me rabbit hunting, gunfire and dogs everywhere. Another thing of interest is the very large furniture tack next to the twisted copper ring. The field is full of them, all sizes and some with very sharp pins. Copper boat nails are common as well.
  18. Having just spent a few days at the beach using the Equinox in beach mode and it performing so well I wondered if people use them for detecting salt lakes looking for gold. Maybe a silly question? My disclaimer is that I have never done that sort of detecting but have read many comments over the past few years about salt lakes being notoriously hard for detectors to handle. Although the Equinox is a VLF and might struggle against a PI in mineralised ground, would it possibly have a distinct advantage in a high salt environ. Steve H - thanks for shifting my other thread about beach detecting. Again, wasn’t sure about this one - Gold forum or Equinox? Cheers, N.E.
  19. Hi all, 10Hrs on the Nox 800, but been detecting for 35+years on audio machines (Seahunter XS500, SD2100 and Excaliburs) where ears and experience do all the work. I have been asked to look for a reasonably small (1/4 inch) filigree platinum and ice stud earring, 2 year head start in a flowerbed. As much as I love the Excal as my goto machine, this is where the Nox is definitely the right tool for the job, and it's going to be tough going and happy to have the sens screwed hot so it's chatting away to itself. Fortunately no EMI. Looking to more experienced folks here for suggested tweaks to the defaults to maximise signal for this. I don't have a matching item to test on. I am estimating it'll be no more than 1" down. Soil is highly weathered basalt loam, homogenous low levels of background iron and bauxite enough to twitch the signal in pinpoint mode. Will be using the 6" rather than the 11" mophead due to Fe trash. Appreciate any useful intel on this. Cheers, and thanks.
  20. Late this afternoon I snuck in a beach hunt. It was very disappointing in the beginning. The conditions were just great with a low tide but there was nothing much down low. I began following the advice I gave Adam about Zig Zagging and it was only producing odd targets. Sometimes the beach just doesn't have much to give you I began to say. When I reached one of my good beaches after about a mile walk and the conditions weren't right it was time to return on the high side. This I did and I worked my way into a few coins rather than just trash and by now I had 3 cheap rings which I would have been 'satisfied' with had I gotten back to my car then but it was a great sunset again. This time I didn't have my phone so no pictures of it. I worked the high side for a bit with a grid and then I heard a little 1. When I say 'little' I mean it was not very loud. It was consistent and I was hopeful. I don't get many 1's so in my first scoop I could see something sandy hanging from it and it had knots. It wasn't exactly balled up but I could tell it was a chain and I was hopeful. I could see it ... GOLD! And when I got it home I was able to measure it. It is 30 inches (a delicate link) that weighs 8.4 grams. That gives me some pause but I'll get it checked and modify the post if it is a fake. Here it is with the other junk from the hunt. Here is a hunt from 4 days ago when there was a lot less than today. Mitchel
  21. So after returning the gold Kruzer to kellyco, I decided to go with an equanox 800 instead, thanks to Kellyco for hooking me up with a good deal! They took care of me! What coil is a good second coil? What do u use it for. I'll be in the river mostly and at the beach around 3 times a year.
  22. In the last week I have found 12 silver coins at some incredible depths with the Equinox 800. Dimes, quarters, and wheat cents at up to 12". Both Park1 and Park2 have been used depending on the soil. I think Park1 may be a little deeper than Park2. Regardless of which Park program I use I run Iron Bias in F2-0-1, Multi 5 tones, Recovery 4, Sensitivity 22-24 if EMI is low, but even at 20 I have achieved some incredible depths. I've had buddies swing over these with Etrac's and CTX's with large coils and they can't touch some of these deep coins. One buddy used his Etrac, Deus, and Anfibio and was skunked on the deep silver at this place.
  23. I am new to detecting but have about 400 hours of YouTube detecting experience 😁. I got my equinox 800 about 3 weeks ago and have dug at 3 places old school (war nickel and wheat penny), 60’s abandoned house (clad dime and memorial copper penny} and an old farm house/boarding house built in 1890’s ( GOLD ring, Mercury dime, 4 Buffalo nickels, 1 war nickel, 8 1945-48 nickels, 35 wheat pennies and 5 memorial pennies. I am very very happy with my less than 1 month of digging but somehow I feel I’m missing silver at the old farm house. With that many coins from to 30’s and 40’s and only one Mercury dime and 1 silver nickel I’m not sure but wanted opinions as to what I am missing or is it just coincidental that no silver is popping up. I’m running park 1, all defaults with noise cancel and ground balanced out except yesterday I slowed recovery to 4 and decreased FE to 4. Thanks for the add and looking forward to suggestions. Tony
