Nokta/Makro Legend Specs & First Photos

Recommended Posts

I have to admit, this looks like a good unit.  It has my interest. Just looking at the construction it seems quite a bit more sturdy than EQ 600/800 in the coil ear area. Those ears looks very beefy. Add in the carbon fiber lower, another nice perk.

The screen seems a bit busy and crowded with little icons. Not so much a negative but slightly distracting to some maybe. In my case, the bigger the ID numbers are the better I can see them with my eyes. The Id's on the Legend do not seem all that big.

Nothing wrong with the 11" coil. No different than the standard coil on other detectors. The question is, how is the construction of the coils beyond the ears? Are they sealed well around the wiring and are the coil windings epoxied well? Little questions like that are in my mind.

Audio. Hmm, I rarely use anything other than 5 tones on my Equinox. But this new Nokta has up to 60 tones. It would be interesting to hear what it sounds like. Seems to have all the adjustments like EQ does.

It's really clear to me that Nokta really doesn't like Minelab. It's quite entertaining. Minelab has in all honesty up-priced their products for a long time. They have been arrogant in the past as well. I own one of their machines because it works. I also own one because if it had an issue during warranty it would be taken care of ( this unit has had no issues).

I must say that this Legend has me very curious. Curious enough to buy one? Well, not right yet. I do enjoy playing with new gadgets, and especially new metal detectors. However, I've bought quite a few that were not all they were cracked up to be. If I could find one of these new Legends and perhaps even trade my ORX towards it to soften the price.. Yeah I'd do it.

What does worry me is warranty claims with this new machine, and the availability of warranty service along with turnaround time if there is an issue. 2 yr warranty is a little weak though.

So yeah.. for me at least the ORX I have would definitely be up for trading towards a Legend. The machine looks pretty good. Will be looking forward to hearing from the real world users once this hits the pipeline.

As someone who just did his research and decision making and landed on the Nox 800 only a couple of months ago...

This looks killer on paper.  On paper it looks like a better built 800 with more user profiles, two coils and a spare, field replaceable battery and some other nice touches - for less money.

If I were just starting to do research and decision making now, and hadn't already bought the 800, this does, look, killer.

But, if were looking to buy, right now, didn't want to wait for a good sampling of field reports on performance with the Legend, I wouldn't feel bad just buying the Nox right now.  And I certainly have no regrets on having bought the Nox.  And this doesn't look likely to make me want to sell my Nox and switch.  But, if field reports are good come spring time, and I didn't already have a Nox and I was just getting into the market...  Eh...  Legend looks like a better value - if, performance is there.

So did Minelab with the CTX 3030 but it's an all to rare feature.

It is.  I like the elapsed time feature included on the Legend.  Can help with balancing site coverage, pacing, etc.

My only gripe on the Legend is I would have liked a small 10x5 elliptical coil option out of the box vice 6” round.  Not sure why they felt compelled to mimic Equinox in that regard.  Must have been what the surveys were telling them.

If performance is up to snuff, Legend appears to be a better value than the Equinox 600.   For one thing, wireless phones are included, extra SF compared to the 600, and full tone customizations vs. the 600.  Features wise, they leapfrogged Apex.  Though the shaft ergonomics of Apex is probably superior.

Well....I'm all over this like a hobo on a ham sandwich ! I believe this will outperform the Nox in virtually every category , especially on value. My only real concern is the balance and extension for a tall guy. About my only complaint is the name. Unless of course , it lives up to it. Now it's just a question of who I'm going to buy it from and how fast it gets in my hands.

Cant wait! I have feeling someone on this forum has had their hands on one. No it is not me... but I got that feeling in my gut for some odd reason. I might be wrong though. Legend knocks the boys from down under off there perch... Time will tell.

I'd like to hear the audio on it, sounds like it has some really nice flexibility in that area. I would pass on a clock and have an old fashioned odometer ?

Already having an Equinox 800, I didn’t really see anything that called out to me telling me I have to own it just yet until I see some performance tests. That’s what truly matters. You can pile on the features till the cows come home, but I want to see what kind of house they are built on and how it all stacks up. Close won’t be good enough either. It’ll have to match or exceed. As has been pointed out, that’s a tall order, and I didn’t see any specific performance claims of superiority being made at all (other than possibly it’s way of handling some bottle caps). Usually when you have that, it leaks out by this stage, and Nomad testers have  definitely not been an exception to that. Just the opposite. So it’s a wait and see.

Would anyone like to comment on the possibility of using underwater headphones with the Nokta Legend? I didn't see any mention of a headphone jack in the specs..?

Thanks,

Rick

Just a note. Anyone worried about basic physical construction issues should know that Simplex was basically a test ground for the design of this detector. This is like Simplex version 2 hardware, with lessons learned there applied here. Like a carbon lower rod. So it’s not like this is an unvetted first gen hardware set.
