Popular Post UT Dave
Returned to a relic site that has been good so far. Had a new gadget to try, a magnetic iron rake. It worked just okay. Needs a redesign to get the faces of the magnets both parallel to and closer to the ground and it will work a lot better. I raked out just a few square yards around where I'd found an Indian Head last time I was here. There's visible iron all over the ground in this spot. So I thought moving some of it out of the way couldn't hurt. It was still missing visible nails though. Definitely needs a redo. But lo and behold... Three feet from where I found the Indian last time... I got a dimey signal, but I thought it was another Indian when I first saw it. But no, it's a Seated! 1888. That felt good! Manticore with the M9 in ATG, running wide open. Moved out from the little raked area and just started hunting. Lots of targets, mostly old ammo, harmonica reeds and such. But some cool stuff too. A broken skeleton key, a pocket watch frame. And then a cool old lock and the next target twelve inches from it, a Barber quarter. Good times! Ended up with two more coins before it got too hot and I headed for home. A 1906 Barber dime and a Chinese cash coin. Interesting decorated piece of lead. And an ancient trigger guard - no numbers or markings on it and I don't know what it might have been off of. Anxious for cooler weather! I'll re-do that rake probably tomorrow and will give it another try in a similar kind of spot. - Dave 34
JCR
That is a spectacular effort with results to match. Some really nice older finds. In addition the the magnets on the rake, get a large super magnet with a short rope attached to drag on the raked up ground. It will get anything that is loosened up for several inches down.
Doc Bach
You knocked em dead Dave! A lot more to come from a site like that one and it has a Gold coin smell to it.
Steve Herschbach
Awesome result. No detector made will ever be so good as to really deal with masking anywhere near like people think they do. There are more good targets left in dense ferrous locations than have been found. Magnets and hard labor is the solution, and I'm really glad your efforts paid off. Just an excellent effort and results, inspiring really, thanks for posting.

The rancher from next door pulled up while I was taking a coffee break and I started chatting him up about the local history. He knew some stuff I didn't. And I knew some stuff he didn't. So we hit it off. I showed him and his daughter some of my finds and they were really interested. One of the things he knew, that I didn't, is he told me 20 years ago archaeologists from a school in California worked very near the spot I was in and they found military buttons. So, gold coin isn't impossible there. - Dave

rvpopeye
DAVE Raking with a magnetic rake has been berry berry good to YOU ! 🤗 She's workin' , keep it in the truck . Did ya get another permission from your visitors ?
UT Dave
Chico Escuela belongs in the HOF! And yes, I did get a new permission! It was too hot to do more than drive up there and take a look, but two homestead sites from the 1910's by the looks of them. He pointed towards one of them about a mile away and asked me if I had checked there. I replied that no, it's posted private, so I've stayed out of there. He fished around in his shirt pocket and handed me his card with his info and told me to have at it anytime I wanted. Then told me about the second site, not visible from where we were standing. So, plenty to do around there! - Dave 4
