Frankly, anyone that only hunts turf has little need for a scuff cover. Grass will never wear down a coil. Fine sand I'd not worry about much either. Gold prospectors however can wear out a cover in very short order. The machines tend to be heavy, and the coil riding the ground (and the rocks) is the norm. Considering a GPZ 7000 coil is $1500, who would not want to protect that investment? So not only does the ground condition and the hours matter, but the replacement cost of the coil is well worth consideration. I almost always use a cover, for the simple reason is almost all my detectors get sold eventually. Keeping the coil looking almost new, as opposed to looking like it has been beat to death, will eventually pay off if a detector is sold. I don't drop or throw my detectors, so the coil is the only thing that really shows wear. I can pop that two year old cover off, and have a machine that has only minor scuffs and scrapes when sold.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of side buttons. If my thumb can't reach it, it's in the wrong place.

The Fisher CZX leak originated on a Russian website based on photos leaked from a distributor meeting. It was all real, but the circuit never proved itself worthy of development. A person making a mistaken statement in a casual podcast is not worth much fuss in my opinion. Russ was just hired back, and is no doubt just getting up to speed, so we can perhaps give the guy a break.

14” coil? Wireless? Makes no sense. The existing coil if anything is too large, and wireless has already been stated as interfering with the electronics. Though I suppose a fix could be found for that.

Plus I like stirring the pot, and if I can work in a little poke at Gerry, all the better! I was tempted to grab one cheap and do a tear down and rebuild. I’d love that machine in a regular housing.

There are only three coils for the 71 kHz Gold Bug 2, and they work on nothing else. I can’t imagine one of these running on a Gold Bug 2, but must honestly say I’ve never seen it tried and don’t know.

The coil showed up today, and it is the new style coil (see below). The good news is it works just fine on my TRP at full sensitivity in air tests at least, and with accurate target id. Though this was a quickie air test, nothing more. I'll do real life stuff later. The bad news is the coil, if I had to make the call right now, is ever so slightly less sensitive to my 0.10 grain test nugget than the NEL Snake. They are very close, but I thought maybe the concentric would have an edge in air tests at least. I suppose since it was not made specifically for the machine it is a very good result. It does show a coil can be made that works well on a 13 kHz machine and a 19 kHz machine, and it may be NEL and Detech do just that. Before you scoff, remember that Garrett uses the same coils on the AT Pro (15 kHz), AT Gold (18 kHz), and AT Max (13.6 kHz). So same coils go from 13.6 kHz to 18 kHz... not too different than what we are discussing here. Why did I do this? Frankly, just a whim based on a good coil price, plus a 30 year old original 19 kHz Gold Bug headed my way any minute, and a desire to test old 19 kHz against new 19 kHz with a reasonably even playing field.

Yeah, fake detectors people are at least kind of aware of and look out for. Now we have counterfeit coils, and there are few things that give them away, like the crooked sticker in the picture. Anything priced too good to be true.......... Part of the problem with counterfeit is not just the lost sale, but people unknowingly getting junk, and the real manufacturer getting blamed for making the junk.

That’s because they do not make one, which is why people are discussing alternatives. Nor is there a price for replacement coils yet. But threads like this may change both items.

Manufacturer part number differences can simply mean a decal difference. I suspect that’s what happened here, since Gold Bug coils say “Gold Bug” on them. This is a compatibility chart, and it should show what coils work, but I can see how that could happen. The “will not interchange with other coils” asterisk only refers to hardwired coils, not electronic compatibility.

I think they are thinking in terms of it being update number 1? Being a computer type I’m more into version numbers. Clearly that is what the update facility is displaying. They ship 1.44 and the update is to 1.61. The funny part is 1.1 would be going backwards. I sure wish as part of any updates Minelab would add a version check function. Something like “before power in, hold and keep holding the accept/reject button. Now power on. The number displayed is the version number. Release accept/reject button, machine will function normally.” New owners may want to know the version number. I would. Making the person find a computer, download this software, and get the cable right, etc. Yeah, thanks, nice way to treat a new Minelab owner. Or it could just tell us the number.
