GPX 4500 For Civil War Relics
Daniel Tn replied to Tom B's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
If you can find a used 15" DeTech Spiral DD coil, snatch it up. That was my favorite coil for the GPX. -
This forum has all I want and need. Nasa Tom is insightful but he is hung up on everything Manticore. Nothing really new going on. I'll hang around here as long as y'all will let me. And try to stay out of trouble.

F5 Vs F75 Or T2 All Metal
Daniel Tn replied to JCR's topic in First Texas - Bounty Hunter, Fisher & Teknetics
If you put it in BP mode while in disc mode, it carries over to All Metal. And it is quite noticeable with it on vs off. Beware though, as you can get a lot of blow back from the ground. IMO the best all around coil for it is the NEL SuperFly. That is the coil that stays on mine. This thread is a sad reminder of the reality of time marching on. The opening post to it, is in reference to my civil war relic site "bullet hill". I've had it for 20+ years and now it's completely gone. Was sold shortly after my last hunt there in which the message references...and now is a subdivision. -

I guess I will be calling them today. Manticore headphones, new out of the box, won't charge or turn on. Completely DOA.

If you don't like the M8 coil, you will have no trouble selling it. I would bet right now, you could get exactly what you paid for it new. I got lucky and found the M15, which I think will fit my needs better...but that M8 seems to be the hot ticket item right now. As for advice/tips. For just getting started, I would recommend bringing the Ferrous Limits closer in to the center line...moreso than the factory presets. This will help you not to get fooled by iron/nails as much. It's similar to the iron bias on an Equinox, but with more user control/customization. As you kinda get a feel for the machine...you can start opening the ferrous limits back up.

I sold my first one to help fund an out of state trout fishing trip. That was back when they still weren't easy to find and it sold fairly quickly. I have since gotten another one but I actually don't use it all that much. I can't even say that I'm in "the jury is out in deliberation" phase....more like, I am still in the process of listening to the evidence for the trial. It is powerful, no doubt. But some ways I like the Equinox much better. And like the Deus 2 more better. Nasa Tom is sold on it for sure but I do think a lot of his love for it comes from having a role in its testing and design.

Dang! I'm jelly! Congrats. I have an M15 in bound as I write this.

Mixed Bag Of Detectors.

Hmm. Wanna part with the Tarsacci? -
I've had both the XL and the Quest ones. I liked the Quest ones the best. The XLs are comfortable but the audio sounds scratchy to me through them.

I think they've well rounded out the whole machine. It's not perfect but it's the one I reach for when I go hunting.

When Your Wife Tells You To Go Detecting, Just Go!

Great!! -
My last time using the D2 was with the .71 version. I liked it then but ended up letting the unit go. I hadn't even followed any of the updates or anything...been busy with other hobbies. For some reason though, I decided to give the D2 another try. In doing so I saw they were up to version 2.0 now. I have used it only a few times but I can already tell...this thing isn't going anywhere. Pretty significant improvements from .71 to 2.0 IMO. It runs really well and smooth and I just like it. Everything about it. I'm actually getting ready to price all my other detectors now and just keep this one.

How Well Does The Equinox 15" Coil Perform?
Daniel Tn replied to TampaBayBrad's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
There isn't a coil error, it isn't erratic or anything like what you'd see with EMI. It just don't work on the 900. Doesn't detect anything. I can unplug it and put it on the 800...and it works fine. I can take the 6 and 11 inch coils and they work on the 900 too. But for some reason the 15" is completely dead when it's plugged to the 900. -
I have the Nox 800, 900, and Deus 2 right now. If I had to pick one today between the current CTX and Manticore....I'd opt for the CTX. I love it as a beach machine.

How Well Does The Equinox 15" Coil Perform?
Daniel Tn replied to TampaBayBrad's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
Instead of starting a new thread about the 15" I thought I would just ask here. I just got one of these coils brand new. I was wondering if it was a fluke or by design...but the 15" does NOT work on the Nox 900 but works great on my 800. I thought the only difference between the 800 and 900 were the shafts and a few minor software tweaks. I guess there's something else too because I don't know why else the same coil would work on the 800 and not the 900. Any of you guys ran into this? This is the Minelab 15" and not the CoilTek. -
1st Time Out In A While
Daniel Tn replied to Daniel Tn's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Thanks yall. It was actually one of our goats and not a dog...but they follow me around like a dog would. Actually...this picture here is what I was thinking of when I was hunting the other day. This was when he was just little...following me around while I was detecting in their field. He would always do that when I was down there. -
I've mostly been fishing and tinkering with other things. But yesterday I had a really bad day...had to put down one of our pets and that wasn't a fun experience to say the least. I needed some time to just get away and clear my head so I grabbed the detector that evening and went to a small Civil War camp or picket post not far from my house to hunt about an hour before dark. This particular spot has been sort of rare in that we have found several war Era silver coins on it in the past. I know of 3 seated dimes, and a half dime that has came from it. One of the seated dimes came from there earlier this year. In fact, I had hunted it several times since then and hadn't found anything at all. I was using the Nox 900 in Field 2 mode. It was looking to be another busted hunt. I had dug a deep memorial cent that I just knew was gonna be a minie ball but nope. And that was it. Walking back to the truck I got a repeating 50s signal and popped a plug. It was about too dark to see...but I saw I had a silver disc but the size was throwing me off for what it was. I put it in my case and filled my hole and went home. All I knew about it was, it was a holed coin of some sort. When I got it home...I saw it was paper thin and wore slab out. But right beside the hole...was all I needed to ID it. I believe it to be a 1/2 reale. Those do NOT come often in East Tennessee. I was a little in shock! I figure probably a Carlos III but whatever the case...it is most certainly my oldest coin to date. And I didn't even know what I had til I got it home. It was a nice ray of sunshine to a rather bad day. Here it is about 30 seconds after coming out of the ground...and then about 30 minutes later when I got it home. I almost think I can see more details with it dirty.

I am in agreement with the dying hobby aspect of it. When I was a kid in this area, running dogs for rabbits, coons, foxes, etc were huge hobbies. But that was back when there were thousands of acres and nobody cared if you were on their land. Now days...people are so protective of private property that they don't want anybody even looking towards it and there just aren't places to let the dogs run. I don't know a single person locally any more that still does any of that. Metal detecting for most of us, at least here in the States, is on that same path. People don't even want you on public property doing it and fewer and fewer private property owners are letting people search their land. By the time we get a perfect metal detector, there won't be anywhere to use it.

I've had two Manticores. The first one I sold while they were still hard to get, and easy to sell. I used the $ to go on a week long vacation trout fishing in Arkansas. I have since bought another one that I was going to keep but I've about decided to let it go as well. I've sold all my other detectors except for the T2 and am trying to put together enough to get an Axiom. I'd like to have a waterproof vlf detector for the beach but have no idea what I want for that. I've almost considered just getting a CTX for that. That's probably my favorite beach machine. But...the D2 really did a great job on my freshwater sites so there's that to ponder on too.

It's a "no" for me as well.
