Driveway Diggin' Coins
F350Platinum replied to F350Platinum's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
I generally dig signals that are low, especially 1-10. First gold ring I dug in a beach was a 1, got one on a hill behind me that was a 5. Still not sure how much gold is in each. Got to find time to test them. -
Beautiful day to head out. Morning was in the 60s, light wind, never got out of the 70s. At first I was going to try the river, there was supposed to be a low tide. Got down there and it was disappointing. Waterman out in the river bringing in crab pots, and no real low tide. Maybe the harvest moon is keeping the water high. Decided to go to the newer house and see if I could find more coins, boy did I. 57 coins, about $3.50 just in the driveway! Not a fan of digging in gravel, but if you hit it on a low angle it's a lot easier and you don't damage the coins or your shovel. Dates range from 1965 to 2010. This makes over 125 coins I've dug here, still not one silver. 22 Zincolns π΅ Went across the road to scout my new permission, really not much there, got the 1954 dog tag and the Disabled Veterans fob above. Also dug a rein guide, a mangled silver plate spoon, and a corner plate. Here's the trash. Not bad for this place.

Couple Of Finds With The Apex
F350Platinum replied to kac's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Shame the Apex came out right after I bought the Ace 400. I was in a hurry to find all those nails. π That ring is a great find. π -
The key appears to be 2 or 3 pieces. Is there a mechanism of some sort?
-
Can't find anything on the pendant, your speculation about Comic-Con seems good to me. Could well be silver if it's heavy on it's own. Not much association between aliens, pyramids and Rubik's cubes. π Could be an ignition key for a spaceship tho. π€ Nice finds!

Hey GB, one of the pot metal pieces is the Monopoly cannon. Interesting finds! Glad you got some gold. And I got the hammer for the cap gun if you need it π

Unexpected "wheatfield" (updated)
F350Platinum replied to GB_Amateur's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Historic aerials has been a big help for me, I've found 2 house sites that no one living or still here knew about. One person even argued with me! π The photos for this area only go back to about 1967, but that has been good enough. I also use the old USGS maps for the "dots" that indicate house presence, I'd like to learn how to overlay them on GPS apps so I can find them accurately. Guess you caught my post before I realized you did use aerials. π³ -
Unexpected "wheatfield" (updated)
F350Platinum replied to GB_Amateur's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Aaaaaaand you got a Roosevelt too. π€¬ Seriously, great hunt. π Looks like your aerial reconnaissance paid off, there was something there before. -
Nice Dan. I see you got some silver Roosevelts. π Great finds! Silver is silver for sure. Guess the park hasn't been hunted, hope you find more. Were you using the Equinox?

Ok, probably the last time I'll update this. Got some great advice from kac and Chase. I went back to the newer house. I gave the old farmhouse a break because I'm tired of being torn up by poison ivy and chiggers. When I got there I noticed that the farmers had harvested the early corn, leaving this field wide open.I wanted to try my hand at corn stubble hunting, so I walked the field for about an hour, hardly heard any tones unit I got way up in back where there was iron, and got a 34. Pulled a rather new buckle out, I'd say 60s. Still had some of the belt attached. This field is one I haven't hunted, it might produce something but not much. Apparently they pushed some kind of building into the woods but didn't leave anything but nails behind. I'll go back when I can handle hours of nothing. π Went back to the newer house and turned sensitivity down on the Equinox, from my usual 23 to the default 21. Started doing some Old Skool hunting in about a 20x30 foot area in front of the house, swinging low and slow, and really analyzing what the Equinox was telling me. To my surprise I got 14 more coins in about 2 hours. I also dug a Tootsietoy wagon the owner played with as a kid, and found the hammer from an old cap gun. His wife said he would really like it if I saved those old things and gave them to him. Nothing great, a 1982 quarter, memorials from 1961 to 1974, and 5 Zincolns. The coin to the extreme right is really an aluminum slug of some sort. Thought I had silver... Nope. π€¬ I'm going to redo this acre or so more slowly and with lower sensitivity, seems the Equinox is focusing too much on the junk when it's high. Most of the coins were in the same hole as other junk, didn't photograph it today but it was quite a bit. Just getting better thanks to this forum. While I was there a neighbor stopped by and offered his yard (about an acre and a half) and said I can keep it all. His house is newer but it goes right up next to where a really old house was. π

Mn90403 for the win! Nothing like taking advantage of an advantage. π That is a really cool pile of swag for two days' work. Were you using the Equinox?

Ya know, I'm hoping for a good show with Nokta's next detector. I tried the Simplex thanks to Chase, I didn't like it as much as I like the Equinox. Been following the facts amongst the rumors and have my fingers crossed. π€ Even if Minelab comes out with an "Eclipse" π (sorry Swing King) it may be too expensive for my fixed income status now. Selling the Ace would just be a drop in the bucket on the next one. Might be able to snag a used Kruzer or racer by then too.

I'll do just that, I was hoping a couple of more experienced detectorists would chime in on this, I really appreciate you and kac (and others) suggesting things. I will often make broad generalizations as bait of a sort, may not be the best way to do it. Just got my gold test kit, going to see if any of the gold stuff without hallmarks I have found is real. Thanks kac! It will probably jinx me. π

Nice haul and congrats on the ring finds. Looks like you'll be grilling some stakes. π

I'm going to take a chance here and disagree. The stone I have is one of the largest natural rocks I've ever seen here, and it is only hand sized. If you search Google for "Indian grinding stone" and look at images, you will see stones exactly like the one he posted. It's quite interesting. Right next to my house is a ravine that the previous owner found many Indian artifacts in. I haven't searched it as yet. Mine came from my yard when they leveled it, there was a huge pile of dirt that I eventually used as a rifle backstop. I regret that now because I can't metal detect the remaining dirt. π It's not a stretch at all to think this one could be a grinding stone.

More Great Advice For Newbies..
F350Platinum replied to Erik Oostra's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
My stock answer is: "Yes, every time I do this." Or "always" with a smile. π Unless I feel like talking that usually stops it right there. Take heart, it's cheaper than a drug addiction anyway. -
Bravo phrunt, That's a great looking detector too. Looks like Garrett has the gloves off for the fight now. π

More Great Advice For Newbies..
F350Platinum replied to Erik Oostra's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
Thus far I'm not having a problem. I'm retired, it gets me out of the house. If my future is honey-dos, yard work, and camping - when I dig and give my wife jewelry - it's fine with me, and her. Dig jewelry and give it to your wife is my advice. π When the honey-do list is done. π€
