On a safari what is the best coil for coin shooting in hi trash areas? Thanks Bill

All of them! Every new release comeswith a DD coil stock. Do they think we all have hot ground? What's the advantage for me... not a darn thing! Notka/Makro and Minelab both have new waterproof detectors that are seemingly made for me and what do I have to use but another dang DD coil. Blasphemy I say. Give me a 9" concentric PLEASE! Hi everyone , I am new here , I joined this forum hoping to find some tips and guidance on gold hunting because I am really confused , frustrated with so many information and resource on the net , and I dont know from where to start on how can i be a really a gold hunter . Background : My Journey with gold hunting started in 2010 , when I heard from a close friend of mine that there are gold in sudan ( I am from Yemen by the way ) so I decided to give a try , so I bought GPX 4500 at that time it was famous gold detector device + I bought the big circle coil to give me more detecting depth . Why I went for this trip : 1st : Get Rich , 2nd to having fun and go on an adventure . 6 months past , we were expecting to find 1 kg gold at least to cover at least our expenses on this trip , but we found 180 Grams in total , it seemed like we were out of luck may be because we just rushed things up without guard our self with knowledge about gold prospect , we just used the experience of people who went on this trip before and good guy who program the device for us . And that is how round 1 ends in 2010 . What kind of advice I am seeking from you guys , I am looking for that advice which comes from experience : I am going back for round 2 in 2018 , I have my old GPX-4500 device unsold and before going to Sudan again I need to start fresh this time I needed to gain some knowledge on areas such as: 1- What book / blogs should I read to start my gold hunting education ? 2- Should I sell my old device and buy another one ? 3-How to tell if the device find gold from the the sound it produce how to tell the differences ( talking about GPX 4500 ) , this question is connected to Q Number 2 ... I hared that low sound means gold , high means steel .. I have experienced this myself before , but I think it is just 60% true , I am not sure though , need your input on this . 4-How to tell if one area has gold ( with 10 - 20 % chance at least ) and it is worth the time to spend on searching , geologically before going for search ? Do I really need the help of Google earth to scan the place ? 5-Is it true that only places where people find gold is the best place to find gold , what about exploring new area ( this question connected to question number 4 ) . 6-Is it true that long range gold detector are fake ? Another coil question. Given that a mono coils sends a signal that is cone shaped into the ground what would the field of detection be on say a 12 in mono at say 10 inches vs a DD coil that has a blade shaped signal. Say this is in mild ground. Just how much depth is actually lost using a DD coil in the same soil conditions. Would a broader signal at that same 10 inches of depth have an advantage with coverage at that depth?

I may have said this before but I'll say it again. I really like First Texas Product's coil selection. Does anyone know if any mfg. besides Garrett has ever made offered a coaxial coil?

Now that I've got your attention ... One interesting alternative I've seen to traditional walkin' 'n swingin' metal detecting is called the Hot Foot Rug. I'm sure many reading this have heard of it. Basically, from the looks of it it's a search coil apparently embedded into a flexible, rectangular carpet-like piece of material measuring from 18" to 6'. The carpet must, of course, be attached to a box, which the user can keep by their side or clip to a belt. The carpet itself can either be attached to a harness and pulled while walking or dragged behind a vehicle, enabling detectorists to cover a lot more ground -- and with less walking required -- than traditional "stick" detecting. The only thing that makes me not even consider buying one is what I consider to be the excessively-high price (then again, in my opinion MOST metal detectors and search coils are way overpriced.) Especially when dragging the carpet behind a vehicle I would assume the user absolutely must use a good set of noise-canceling headphones. I'm very surprised that the device mentioned above is about the only one of its type I've seen for sale. In my opinion -- and especially with so many detectorists being middle-aged and/or retired folks who aren't as mobile as they used to be -- you'd think there'd be quite a variety of such carpet-like search coils available. Does anyone here prospect with such metal-detecting rugs? My main interest is in prospecting for large, deep nuggets and this technique -- especially with my bad knee -- really appeals to me, as the rug search coil can be several feet wide, which dwarfs even the largest traditional round/oval coils. Any feedback or information on such carpet-type detectors would be appreciated.

Hi all I have a Macro Racer 2 .When I use the stock coil in salt water I have no issues ,it runs really smooth with no falsing,but when I change to the Mars 13 inch Discovery coil inch it runs very erratically and falsing....does any one else have this issue?

What is the biggest coil that you have used? I have an 18" Nugget Finder that works very good. I don't need a sled. It is light. The 19" Z coil is a beast. Many of us know what it takes to wield that monster over good ground. Reg's Gold Album thread has several pictures of prototype coils that were very big. I'm absolutely amazed -- and disgusted -- that Garrett Deepseeker Coils for its ATX are priced at over $500. The coil probably costs the company less than $25 to manufacture. For this reason alone, along with the fact that the ATX only accepts proprietary coils specifically made for it, I'm boycotting Garrett. If I did buy a Garrett product it would be a used unit, as I have no desire to subsidize price-gouging companies. (For those who plan to reply, "Well, it's a free market, they can charge whatever they want" save your breath -- I get it.) By the same token, I refuse to buy a MineLab PI detector new and would only buy a pre-owned model. $7,000 for the ML 7000? Are they KIDDING? Again, look at the size of a metal detector box -- the electronics they contain is pretty minimal. I strongly suspect that people with good electronics/electrical engineering skills could make a killing selling PI detectors that rival anything Garrett and Minelab manufacture for a FRACTION of what those companies' products sell for.

I found this video that clearly shows why Concentric coils are better than DD's, This Guy is using a mid priced machine and two budget machines one costs about 200 bucks and the other is about 350.00 bucks both fitted with concentric coils, I have used concentric for years although I own a few of DD's I don't use them because they restrict any detector way too much, many people say you need a small DD for target separation well that is just not true in most cases and I find that they just don't work well enough along with the fact that they miss ID targets and lack the sensitivity of a concentric, Having proved this to my self using my GMT. J.

Just curious. Excepting the Deus, which has no coil cable, what are people's thoughts on cable routing? There is the original "wrap around the rod" method. There are also a few detectors that route the cable up the shaft like the Minelab Explorer/E-TRAC/CTX series, the GPZ, Garrett ATX, and Nokta Impact. I am especially interested to hear what people who have used both systems think - pros and cons. I have a few thoughts but don't want to bias the responses so will weigh in later.

Those of you who have tried both the Detech and elite coils, (18 inch) how do they compare and witch do you prefer?

A guy has a bunch of Bigfoot coils on ebay. None of them appeared to be sealed. One of them has a picture of the insides. For your viewing enjoyment.....the inside view of a Bigfoot coil.

I myself when I get something new like a coil for one of my detectors I think all is well. Well my thinking has just been shot down. I've had this 7 inch coil from Detech not too long but never really checked it over but I won't do that again. What I found was the nut at the coil didn't have maybe but one turn on it. I know that this could come from any coil company and I was lucky that it hadn't gotten wet. I do find that the Detech 7" coil works great on my MX Sport and I don't regret buying it. This is just to let you know when you think you know everything you really don't. Chuck

Steve, I still have my old White's Goldmaster V-Sat. It's the same one I used when we hunted together at Crow Creek. I have two coils for it, the original coil it came with and the very small one that is used for tight places and bedrock. This is the coil that White's first put out when we lived in Alaska, small and black with no markings on it. Steve Houston introduced it when he came to Alaska on his promotional trips. I don't use the original one because I find it impossible to ground balance with that coil, so I am limited to just using the small one. That's ok by me since most of my limited and sporadic nugget hunting is in bedrock areas. The problem I am having is that I constantly get false signals and lots of other noise whenever the coil comes in contact with anything. If I bump rocks or brush, or if I even brush it up against wet grass it will false signal. this makes it impossible to "scrub" the ground as you advise people. I am wondering if this problem might be in the settings on my control box, perhaps I am choosing the wrong settings? I have tried just about everything I can think of, but it does this all the time and is very annoying. Is there anything that you can think of that I may be doing wrong?

This topic is about what coil you would like to add to your coin hunting coils. Most coils that come with a new detector is a large DD coil. White's has a concentric coil that is a 9 inch and I think is a great coil. Now myself want a 6 inch concentric coil to go with my MX Sport. It's been said that the DD is more in demand over concentric What I want to know from you is just what you want in a small coil. That being a DD are the same in a concentric coil for coin hunting. I like the idea of the battery in the stem, something I wondered the never done in the first place. Should make buying new coils a bit cheaper. The pointer looks good but cant see how it would work wirelessly 20 feet under water though?
