  1. Hi all, just thought I would share abit of a story on my gold monster, Well I received it a few weeks ago from JP and had a bit of a play round with it with various size nuggets in the back yard while also checking out the discrimination feature. Was happy with the results on specie gold and more solid type bits. Well to cut a long story short, I fell off some machinery at a height of 3.5 meters plus and broke 2 fingers on my right hand which were at right angles of where they were sposed to be.Snapped them back into place by myself, but fractured both wrists and dislocated my right shoulder and had a nasty lump on my head from impact with a rock Anyway though keen to go bush to give it a good trial run myself I was in no position to even hold a pick properly let alone swing one into hard earth. Goldhound Dale one of our crew has met a new girl and asked if she could take it bush with him for a week, Anyway a sat phone call last night, a novice that had never picked up a detector in her life now had a 25 grammer in her jar. Hope to post a pick when they come in. Go the monster, not just for specks by the looks. Cheers Dave.

  5. LOL & my bad.. I should have said "...up to 6 months & longer.." Depends on what the encrusting agent / mineral(s) is/are and whether it's attacking the object / coin or growing outward upon itself.. Sometimes both happen concurrently.. Also, most concretions don't attack and typically will free up; those objects tend to get damaged when folks try to remove it too quickly.. Once you're past the "standard" non-abrasive cleaning methods and are in the oil trying to save as much collector / numismatic value as possible it just isn't going to be an overnight thing is all.. Both concretions and encrustations will generally slowly dissolve / fall away in the olive oil.. In the case of encrustrations though, one can only hope it's growing upon itself rather than attacking the underlying substance.. Staining is another matter entirely, and I've never seen true staining of metals non-invasively removed.. Swamp

  6. So I was on the beach yesterday just swingin' the DFX having a great time. Had my headphones on, minding my own business, when this foreign tourist (sounded like New York) walks right up to me and shows me some wire-looking stuff with a fish hook attached. She then asks me what to do with it. Really, lady? So I stop what I'm doing, take off my headphones, and politely suggest any one of several garbage cans conveniently located just across the dunes. She then asks me which one I use. Huh? Still trying to be polite, despite the circumstances, I told her "the one my bike is parked next to". She then says "I bet you don't throw your garbage away". Excuse me? I said "I bet I do" while I pull a handful of bottle caps and can slaw out of my right pocket and show her. She kind of sniffed and said, "Well maybe you do" and walks on down the beach without another word. What is it about swingin' a detector on the beach that makes people think they can say whatever asinine thing to you that pops into their silly heads? People that would never dream of going up to a complete stranger in say, Wal-mart, and making some rude comment, think it's perfectly fine if you have a detector in your hand. I have no problem with kids that want to "help" you dig treasure, beach bums asking for your crusty quarters, and the inevitable old salt with a story about the Hopeless Diamond that he dug on that very beach in '72. But going out of your way to ruin a beautiful day for someone else is just beyond me. Rant over. Thanks ya'll!

  7. Took the Deus to my beaten jewelry patch at a park and decided to relic hunt for deep squeakers instead. There used to be a farmstead on the land and a road bisecting the park...both long gone. Hunting slowly 18khz, 0 discrim, silencer -1, reactivity 3, notch 0-38, I caught a signal nearly at the edge of detection. Two directions two different tones and faint. Pinpointing was difficult wiggling-off. I switched to 8khz, and dropped reactivity to see what's up, something I don't normally do. Loud and clear two directions two different tones...hmmmm? Stabbing into the soil I'm stopped dead at 1-2 inches by a hard object. Move 90 degrees, damn, same thing. On the fourth stinking try I see a brick and think, I'm not digging that up it'll leave a crater, but the pinpointer is flipping out saying dig. I found another brick below that one and both bricks sat at 45 with the signal coming between them. Stabbing between the bricks with just enough space for my screwdriver it's a wonder I didn't scratch it as I was kind of wildly flicking soil out. Must have been near 7 to 8 inches and it was on a 45 degree angle. I didn't even know what it was except United States and a number 2. I knew it was my oldest coin found though. I've hit a few silver dimes and several Indian cents in this unasuming park but never did I think it would give up a coin like that. I've taken it to a coin dealer and he says it's too worn to ID the variety and to soak it in oil...where it still sits. Keep on swingin'!

  9. Hi Montammie I have experienced many instances of harassment over the years whilst beach detecting but also many great times.I've had young thugs throwing beer bottles at me,Someone called the police on me one night and told them I was swinging a shotgun.I had a guy run up and grab the detector shaft and start swinging it wildly in front of his mates. But the many nice people far outweighed any issues. Most people showed interest in the hobby or when explained understood the pastime. Since moving to the goldfields over 7 years its been sweet sailing as there are many like minded people to meet.

  10. Steve,I have been reading on several forums that people report that wireless headphones, because of "cross talk" will decrease the detection depth. What is your input on this? Thanks.

  11. OK, I know people are probably tired of looking at my Fly-Poo gold, but check out the amazingly tiny piece in the middle that the GM1000 heard no problem this afternoon up at my "old reliable" bench! Again, I had to take out some brush and dig down a little to get these 6 little guys. Anyone who knows me, knows I love my GB2, but I think I'm starting to love the Monster more....it's such a fun machine! ?

  12. Finally had time to get out and have a decent play with the GM. As KiwiJW and Norvic are finding it seems to be a really good match with the Z. Found 3 with the Z and 4 with the GM - 7 pieces is the standard haul with the GM/GPZ combo isn't it JW? Wrote a few notes about how I found the GM here - https://www.prospectingaustralia.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=343170#p343170 Enjoy :-)

  13. Any missed signal is a misssed signal. It is no doubt possibly for wireless headphones to drop the audio for various reasons, and if that happens right when you go over a target you could miss it. My take is I won't be losing any sleep over this one.

  14. That should make for a good story when Paul gets back to the US.

  21. Last year we were at Pismo beach which is absolutly a great place to hunt. I was toiling along detecting during mid day when the beach is absolutely loaded with people. I happen look up at one point and I notice 5 very attractive middle aged women sitting on the beach watching me and smiling.. .....bachelorette party I'm thinking... So I stop and take off my headphones. Sweat is dripping off me and I'm feeling kinda studly so I shove the head of the scoop forcefully into the sand with my foot, lean against the carbon fiber handle and smile back at them lol. Any luck? one of them asks.... Just some coins I reply back..... Then the next one asks ....Whats your best find? My wife I reply.....Good answer says another... lol strick

  23. I was really hoping while he took the time to examine it. Maybe it will improve enough by soaking for him to ID. I found out this coin is the first time a reference to God was part of the design on U.S. currency...that's what I read, anyway. Thanks, and good hunting!

  24. I use the SDC 2300 to scan quartz that has been pulled out of mines...as well as the ATX. Hard to beat the gold bug 2 for this doing though, prob the best to use for this...

  25. Yes, I have been to the Gold Hill Pocket! They just stumbled accross it while hunting. It was large slabby pocket gold, inches thick. No placer directly below it though, which is strange. But small multi-pockets in the entire area, as well as placer on the other side of the ridge which feeds the Rogue river. Every peice of quartz that I collected and took home and crushed from that area had gold in it.
