So you’d consider the Deus instead. These omissions on lower price machines are not accidents, but carefully chosen. You will find myriad lower price models that lack one or two features a serious detectorist might feel is “essential”, for the sole purpose of moving the person to the higher price model.

A few hours driving might be the best insurance you ever bought. For me, simply handling the detector tells me a lot. How does it feel on MY arm? How does it sound to MY ears? And how well can I navigate the controls without having seen the manual? I’ve been detecting for decades, and I should be able to easily figure a machine out without the manual. I really like a good menu system, and I really dislike controls that are only accessible by special, unmarked key combinations. The Minelab X-Terra for instance. You accessed Beach Mode by a secret two button push. Can’t tell you which ones off the top of my head, and no amount of looking at the detector will tell you. Equinox has a couple of those, like accessing the Iron Bias setting. None of the above requires leaving a dealer showroom, but are the things that tend to make or break a detector for me. I can successfully detect with dozens of detectors, but the difference between liking one and loving one is found in these types of details.

Most people need little more than the presets and the sensitivity control to do well with an Equinox. The presets are some of the best ever designed, and people get into trouble getting too far from the presets initially. The Equinox is actually very easy, but people do have a way of making it harder than need be. Resist the urge. I'm a big Equinox fan, but if you do not need waterproof I agree with Joe that the Vanquish is also worth consideration.

Does Anyone Hunt Without A Coil Cover?
Steve Herschbach replied to Badger-NH's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
Frankly, anyone that only hunts turf has little need for a scuff cover. Grass will never wear down a coil. Fine sand I'd not worry about much either. Gold prospectors however can wear out a cover in very short order. The machines tend to be heavy, and the coil riding the ground (and the rocks) is the norm. Considering a GPZ 7000 coil is $1500, who would not want to protect that investment? So not only does the ground condition and the hours matter, but the replacement cost of the coil is well worth consideration. I almost always use a cover, for the simple reason is almost all my detectors get sold eventually. Keeping the coil looking almost new, as opposed to looking like it has been beat to death, will eventually pay off if a detector is sold. I don't drop or throw my detectors, so the coil is the only thing that really shows wear. I can pop that two year old cover off, and have a machine that has only minor scuffs and scrapes when sold. -
Why Didn't Minelab Think About It?
Steve Herschbach replied to Xergix's topic in Minelab Equinox Forum
Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of side buttons. If my thumb can't reach it, it's in the wrong place. -

The Fisher CZX leak originated on a Russian website based on photos leaked from a distributor meeting. It was all real, but the circuit never proved itself worthy of development. A person making a mistaken statement in a casual podcast is not worth much fuss in my opinion. Russ was just hired back, and is no doubt just getting up to speed, so we can perhaps give the guy a break.

Dumping SDC 2300 Detectors
Steve Herschbach replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Ah, more controls implies sophistication does it? And simplicity of operation must reflect on the mental capabilities of the operator? Just simple folks really, not nearly so smart as you, are they Reg? You first post in this thread said anyone who bought an SDC 2300 is a sucker. I deleted it, so you came back with this instead. It’s a poor forum member that constantly insults anyone that uses anything that does not meet with their approval. You want respect, but show none for others. Critique detectors all you want Reg, but either change your tone when it comes to other forum members, or leave. -
Soon a new V3i will be a thing of the past. This guy has three for cheap, save $400 http://www.treasurenet.com/forums/treasure-related-stuff-sale/641822-nib-white-s-spectra-v3i-d2-coil-warranty.html

Well, there is plenty of demand for used ones. Only one of the four left now. -
Minelab 2020 Full Year Report
Steve Herschbach replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Africa and the Middle East are managed as a unit, with the headquarters in Dubai. There are dealers across Africa. You don’t become the largest seller of gold machines in Africa and the Middle East with no presence. https://www.minelab.com/usa/where-to-buy?geozone=2442 -
Sounds like you’ve done your research. The Poling and Clarkson reports are great. Fine Gold Recovery of Selected Sluicebox Configurations 1989 Gold Losses at Klondike Placer Mines - Gold Recovery Project 1989 An Analysis of Sluicebox Riffle Performance 1990 A review of placer gold concentrate recovery and upgrade options 2011 I’m a carpet under miners moss guy due to Clarkson.

Dumping SDC 2300 Detectors
Steve Herschbach replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Yeah, and I apologize if it seemed I was picking on anyone. The dump comment from me is a result of so many in a short time, not any one person. Plus I like stirring the pot, and if I can work in a little poke at Gerry, all the better! I was tempted to grab one cheap and do a tear down and rebuild. I’d love that machine in a regular housing. -
Dumping SDC 2300 Detectors

Geez Rick, with a setup like that, I’d expect you to say “they are getting money together for the new Fisher Impulse Gold! -
The coil showed up today, and it is the new style coil (see below). The good news is it works just fine on my TRP at full sensitivity in air tests at least, and with accurate target id. Though this was a quickie air test, nothing more. I'll do real life stuff later. The bad news is the coil, if I had to make the call right now, is ever so slightly less sensitive to my 0.10 grain test nugget than the NEL Snake. They are very close, but I thought maybe the concentric would have an edge in air tests at least. I suppose since it was not made specifically for the machine it is a very good result. It does show a coil can be made that works well on a 13 kHz machine and a 19 kHz machine, and it may be NEL and Detech do just that. Before you scoff, remember that Garrett uses the same coils on the AT Pro (15 kHz), AT Gold (18 kHz), and AT Max (13.6 kHz). So same coils go from 13.6 kHz to 18 kHz... not too different than what we are discussing here. Why did I do this? Frankly, just a whim based on a good coil price, plus a 30 year old original 19 kHz Gold Bug headed my way any minute, and a desire to test old 19 kHz against new 19 kHz with a reasonably even playing field.

Yeah, fake detectors people are at least kind of aware of and look out for. Now we have counterfeit coils, and there are few things that give them away, like the crooked sticker in the picture. Anything priced too good to be true.......... Part of the problem with counterfeit is not just the lost sale, but people unknowingly getting junk, and the real manufacturer getting blamed for making the junk.

Four used ones advertised on The Classifieds in the last couple days, one sold already. Seems like Gerry’s circle of people... you know something the rest of us do not know Gerry?
