  1. It is really fun to read about your hunts and the bonus is getting to see your settings. I am really having fun with the Eq. too. I am hunting a park that is just littered with coins, it's unbelievable actually. But very few old coins and so far, no silver. I have been playing with Park1 and 2, Field 1 and 2. If I get an interesting hit I switch through all four settings (after ground balancing them all etc.), and it is quite educational to listen to each Mode's response on the same target. Sometimes I will get an "iffy" but interesting sound. If I cycle through the four settings I find it helps clarify my decision to dig or not. I am about to try notching out bigger sections of the VDI and see how that goes as well. But today, without notching out zinc pennies, I just skipped digging the obvious 21's and concentrated on nickels, dimes, quarters and weird sounding hits.
  2. School, now it's obvious why you have good finds. You work for it. A great example of hard work paying off.
  3. Haha that's why I have my screen name too. I used to play online video games when I was working out of town with my then young son.
  4. Interesting post dewcon...especially the GB thoughts...and Mitchel, bingo...
  5. Guess I'm lucky. I stay away from the pinpointer (I'm always wrong when I try to dig where it says it's centered), and use headphones. It will be interesting to see what these anomalies indicate. It will also be interesting to see whether these are the kinds of idiosyncracies that can be fixed with a software update.
  6. Yup, I tried Field 1 today on the beach in dry sand and liked it alot. Thanks for the tip! I also am frequenting So. Cal. beaches and am really hoping for some kind of storm that makes a good enough cut. I am sure the Equinox will kill it in that situation.
  7. Smart work and a readable post, thanks. It's interesting that you were using Field 1, I haven't tried that at the beach - yet.
  8. Wow that made me realize (again), how blessed we are to be able to get out and enjoy this hobby. Earthsweeper I look forward to hearing how you are doing with your detector. If you are ever out in the So. Cal. area let me know maybe we can get out for a hunt. Best wishes.
  9. That is a rare and stunningly perfect 8 Escudo if indeed it is genuine, and it sure looks as though it is. The find of a lifetime. Hearty congratulations!
  10. Buying a Pro-Pointer AT changed my whole recovery routine. It's so much faster using a pointer - at least for coin shooting in parks etc. I have not used it with my 7000 yet and don't expect to, as using the 50-50 technique is fast and effecient.
  11. Wow, I just checked the iron bias on all my settings. The majority of them were at 6. I am going to put them lower.
  12. nice work! I am in the Santa Monica area sometimes and have had quite a bit of luck as well but no badges...
  13. That gives us all incentive. Happy for you, and it wouldn't have happened unless you decided to dig. Great job.
  14. This may not be exactly on point with the discussion but it's an interesting approach that may apply: https://www.minelab.com/usa/go-minelabbing/treasure-talk/dealing-with-bottle-crown-caps
  15. The hardest part of detecting; getting the coil over the good stuff. Good report.
  16. I have an Equinox and I don't have a problem with 50 point scaling. The tones seem to be a big key to this particular detector. That's not to say the scale isn't important but, at least for me, I haven't found it to be a hindrance.
  17. Ha ha, I didn't take it for laziness - and I completely agree with working smart as opposed to wasting time and energy. Best of luck to you I look forward to your better ways, I am sure you will find them.
  18. Lighthouse, don't be too worried about working hard. This is part of why I even metal detect at all, it get's you in shape. Don't worry about the physical side of it, it's the mental edge that tends to get fatigued quicker than the body and that's another cool part of detecting it helps train concentration and focus. Good luck.
  19. I have been unsure whether to dig solid-sounding repeatable hits in the 2 - 11 range. After reading the discussion above, it sounds as though I should. I have been slow to understand that a low VDI number does not necessarily mean it is ferrous, it just means that if it is non-ferrous, it is a low conductor. Something to ponder.
