  1. Anyone know much about musket balls, found these a while back on some private land I had a chance to check, the large one has a very heavy lead oxide layer and the lead feels heavier than I expected for its size?
  2. My son had his first official hunt today on some private property in New Mexico. He was looking for old coins with the whites sst I gave him earlier this year, no coins but he dug this 9 1/2 ounce possible meteorite about 10 inches down. My son said a two pound confirmed meteorite was found very nearby fairly recently that looks exactly the same. My son said the detector just screamed when the coil went over it.
  3. Got it on ebay for around $65 and it has a little plastic clip that hangs on your belt to carry the digger. it bangs on my leg in an annoying way when walking long distance but works out fine when i'm slowly working an area. I bought the digger to use when I'm out in the wilds hunting with the deus, the little french detector pinpoints really good and most of my targets are close to the surface, so no need for a pick seems to be working out. much lighter than carrying my pick, keeping in mind one of the reasons i went with the Deus in the first place was packability. Thanks Steve for the kind words. this one was in one of the worst spots right on the trail, a real ankle breaker amazing no one had stepped in it in poor light. I was out near the lake chatting with another member of one of the clubs I belong to, he was out hunting also and lives in the area, by accident I wound up parking right next to his car and we done for the morning at the same time. While we were chatting at the side of the road the game warden rolled up and asked how we were doing, we told him nothing but trash (sadly this was 100% true) and that was OK because it was such a beautiful day to hunt. Turns out he was also interested in detecting and we wound up talking for a bit about the current situation on prospecting and detecting, Scott was his name, he was into coin hunting...very nice and reasonable LEO, we also talked of the importance in policing ourselves and educating others in protecting our access. for now the area is very supportive of responsible metal detecting by those following the rules and being considerate of others, one bad apple could change that for everyone.
  4. For now Don Pedro lake still allows metal detecting with the exception of a few areas that are off limits, as long as we follow the rules. The first rule is to put the area back to normal (fill your holes) when you are done. I filled your hole in the middle of the trail, but if you continue to be inconsiderate (and this really was stupid) we will lose the freedom to hunt there.
  5. Hi Steve, beautiful stone work, I'm happy to see the jade polished up nicely for you. I will send you my home address, although if i can manage to find a little nugget this summer out hunting with the Z that looks suitable for what i want i may be bringing it back so you can make it into a pendant or something for my sweetie. clark
  6. I'm also going to wait, I'm not buying until I see a 30% increase in the fun I'm going to have...so far the jury selection hasen't even started yet, have to see how the new open coil and everything shakes first.
  7. Great story and sounds like a fun adventure even without any yellow, it so good just to get out in the open. I was out last week and the only way to describe the mosquitos is they are life and death desperate to eat. I was decked out like you and to not much avail the deet kept them from drinking my blood but it didn't keep them away.
  8. Good job Mitchel, shame you have to spoil your good time trying to teach that idiot...hope he reads what you have written and could understand how his behavior affect everyone and that the law has to stoop to regulating the lowest common denominator...and that jerk is a low common denominator for sure.
  9. I hope so, I really want one and love my gpz...but my feelings are still a little hurt and I want them to kiss it ($$$$$) and make me feel better.
  10. ouch!!!... another expensive coil, I wonder if you wait just a bit if the price will drop 30%
  11. Gave it my best shot, even hiked in through the snow for a couple of miles...going to be 3 or 4 more weeks I think before the dirt roads are clear enough to pass.
  12. Scott, thanks for the report...very good news!!!!!!!! Dean, I second the recommendation of Andy's book anyone using the deus will benefit greatly from owning and reading this book. i.m ready for ver4 and the new smaller coil i just hope we don't have to wait to long... snow is a melting and those iron infested patches are calling.
  13. i was cruising through google window shopping tutorials on my new detector and ran across this review and article, if you have not seen it and are using the Deus there is a lot of great information about understanding the Deus tones and features as well as an explanation of the different factors affecting VDI and the benefits and disadvantages of using the normalizing function. the writer also explains the Deus secret screens and how to access them, the x,y graph is a useful little tool. in combination with the user manual this article is packed with good info and tips. http://www.metaldetectingworld.com/xp_deus_review.shtml personally, I'm finding the Deus easier and easier to use...its complex, but the menu system is really intuitive and easy to learn. it runs very stable and seems predictable. the tones are very clean and while it will take time to become one with the tones, it is a great hunt by sound detector and I'm comfortable with that after using the GPZ, plus having the other features will make this a great combination in gold country. cherry picking coins is fairly easy and I'm pulling coins from areas missed by the whites, but i can't really say that is any fault of my whites...mostly poor technique on previous hunts and I'm being more careful with the new machine now. i also love walking into my hunting sites with the deus all folded up...hardly gets a look except from the occasional kid thinking its a drone of some sort. Then in seconds everything unfolds and I'm up and running automatically in my last used program...changes are easy and take seconds the Deus has really fantastic pin pointing without using the pin point function. i have the 11 inch coil it is the same for the all coil size i would think, by using the wiggle technique 99% of the time I'm finding the target located dead center at the front edge of the coil. one more thing, i bought a dust cover and protector from the dealer, but i found it a little hard to see through in the sunlight, so i bought another i like better on Ebay. they were both around 20 bucks, i don't plan on using the clear silicon cover if anyone wants it let me know and i will send it to you free... thats no cost, nothing to you just say you want to give it a try (old cover on the right, new cover on the left).
  14. Hey Chuck, There my be a ctx in my future I know it's tops when id'ng targets. Next I'm waiting for the new gpz and Deus coils it will be a race to see wich hit the shelves first, now I have to learn everything I can about the Deus, just got a copy of Andy Sabisch's book, seems like it's loaded with good information.
  15. Really nice, now you are making me second guess my choice of the Deus over the ctx, but I know it's really about your hard work! love seeing those finds keep going...
  16. Something like that is probably how I'm going to wind up, the access cabs have a little storage inside and dodge 4x4 is rated right up there with the jeep. I'm still fond of the timeless appearance of the jeeps and availability of parts, I tend to keep my cars 10years or more and even old jeeps have a certain curb appeal to them. i have even considered one of the old Toyota fj's with a v8 conversion, they are built like a tank, but I've driven fron California to upper idahoe in one years ago and it was a long trip, they don't drive the best for any comfort.
  17. Those are really nice, I'm afraid I'm in about the same place as the Toyota, at 4500 pounds max. I think it will pull the boat ok, but with gear and fuel I'm probably over 5000#'s and pulling it over the hill to Santa Cruz over time might be a problem. I keep rehashing this and I need a small v8 in a vehicle with good 4 wheel that's small enough to get me into areas I want, or sell the best boat I've ever owned. Salmon and rock cod season now, so I going to cross my fingers and keep checking cl.
  18. Fred, that was a great explanation, I could see what you were saying and cutting a slit is not a technique ive tried. I'm going to give it a shot next time out. thank you, clark
  19. ya, but I'm not a fan and have only seen a couple episodes. just throwing out random, pop culture mumbo jumbo... my wife doesn't get it either course she grew up in China.
  20. Sensei, what is this patch you speak of??????????? the gold, it resides there??????? and Sensei, these patches, where can one find them????
  21. I'm going to need to replace my old friend pretty soon, id like to get one more season out of it and the engine still runs strong after just turning 215000 miles. the engine and drivetrain are the Mercedes part of the Daimler/Chrysler, the sound system and most of the electrical and trim are true Chrysler and long since outperformed their useful lifespan. also and my main complaint with the ML (other than the engine warning alarm) (BING+BING+BING+) (Mercedes needs your money) (ha ha you can't turn me off) is its dislike for having its wheels uneven. i thought it was just a problem with the traction control on mine, but after a little research i found its a common complaint of the need to road build every time the terrain becomes uneven or the wheels will spin, which is near everywhere in gold country. the work around is to hammer the throttle which has a down side now and then. Jeep is the number 1 rated off road vehicle and best fit for some of the trails I've been driving on and toyota if not far behind in most of the off road reviews... ford raptor, dodge power wagon, subaru, nissan and the list goes on and on i think id like a jeep best, but it won't pull my boat, so its sell the boat or chose something else. Toyota off road traction control seems to do a pretty good job and it will just barely tow my boat i think with the tow package and 6 cylinder. probably if i want to keep the boat I'm going to have to settle for something larger, tundra, dodge, chevy, or ford. sports mobiles are way cool but more than id want to spend for one and not something id want to drive around other than prospecting and id prefer not paying car insurance on something sitting in the driveway. I'm wish jeep would make the wrangler with a V8 and decent tow capacity, I've seen a few after market swaps for sale, but the sellers are to in love with their creations and want about twice what i think they are worth for something I'm gonna take out and scratch up.
  22. paul, welcome back... you got your black belt now Sensei, teach us the way of the force...it be strong with this one the way you are.
