  1. The White's MXT was released in 2002 and was still in production when White’s closed up shop in 2020. The MXT is a 14 kHz VLF metal detector aimed primarily at coin, jewelry, and relic detecting as well as gold prospecting. Previous versions now discontinued include the original MXT with 9.5" concentric coil and the MXT 300 with 12" concentric coil. The MXT Pro was originally released with the 12" 300mm coil. The current MXT Pro features a 10" round DD coil and adds three new touch pad buttons to the control pod (see picture below), meter backlight, and multi tones but performance is identical to earlier versions. "THE MXT ALL-PRO is like having three metal detectors in one! You’ll enjoy the keypad, high-efficiency backlight, Grab and lock settings. This favorite comes with a 10” DD search coil. 3. The Garrett AT Pro metal detector was introduced in 2010 and is still in production. The AT Pro is a fully submersible 15 kHz VLF metal detector aimed primarily at coin, jewelry, and relic detecting. The AT Pro was revolutionary at the time it was released due to it having a full complement of controls, an LCD display, and built in speaker, all while being waterproof to ten feet. This and a low price has resulted in the Garrett AT Pro being one of the most commercially successful metal detectors ever designed. 12/1/2018 - Take note of a temporary offer to buy the AT Pro with the smaller 5" x 8" coil as standard instead of the 8.5" x 11" coil. Garrett AT Pro Sport Special "This all-terrain detector offers new and exclusive Garrett technology that makes it ideal for hunting coins, relics, caches, jewelry, and even gold nuggets. The AT Pro includes Garrett's exclusive Target ID technology and patented discrimination features. Two indicator scales allow you to see the detector’s discrimination setting (Lower Scale) as well as the analysis of each target (Upper Scale). In addition, a Digital Target ID scale provides a more specific target value. The AT Pro also features High Resolution Iron Discrimination (40 points) for separating desirable targets from iron junk in cluttered areas, several advanced audio features and a standard 8.5" x 11" elliptical Double-D searchcoil engineered for optimum performance in more challenging mineralized soils. In addition, the AT Pro can be operated in a very user-friendly Standard (STD) Mode or in a more advanced PRO Mode for experienced hunters." Source: Owner's Manual Garrett AT Pro metal detector Garrett AT Pro control panel Pro Mode Audio - Proportional Audio response and Tone Roll Audio features allows user to hear subtle changes in target’s response to better judge conductivity, size, shape and depth. All Terrain Versatility - Weatherproof design for dusty, humid, or wet environments; and fully submersible to 10-foot depth. High-Resolution Iron Discrimination™ - Provides fine resolution of iron discrimination (40 levels) for the most precise ability to separate a good target from iron trash. Iron Audio™ - Allows the user to hear discriminated iron (normally silenced) to avoid digging tricky, undesired flat iron objects (i.e. bottle caps, steel washers) and to alter the detector’s mid-tone signal’s range. Digital Target ID - Numeric scale from 0 to 99; indicates a target metal’s conductivity for increased ability to distinguish targets from each other. Fast Track™ Ground Balance - Automatic feature that allows the user to quickly ground balance the detector in mineralized soil conditions. Ground Balance (Manual) - Allows the operator to manually adjust the detector’s ground balance to reduce the detrimental effects of ground mineralization. Pinpoint - This non-motion All-Metal Mode function is used to precisely locate a detected target in the ground. Fast Recovery Speed - Allows greater ability to pick out good targets amongst trash. One-Touch™ Treasure Hunting - With one touch of a button, your detector is: powered on; automatically reset to factory (or your) settings; and ready to search! 7. I rarely use any single frequencies. Single frequency as fallback for the worst EMI has been mentioned often. I have also found single frequency operation to help in severe ground by mellowing the responses to both the ground and hot rocks as compared to Multi.
  8. The CZ-3D and CZ-21 have always puzzled me. I figured job one after getting Dave Johnson on board would have been a digital redesign of the CZ into a waterproof housing that more resembles the F44. Replace the CZ3D and CZ21 with one lighter weight model waterproof to ten feet. Dave designed the original, so you would think this would be a reasonable goal, especially with the CZ being an old analog design both expensive and difficult to manufacture. I always liked the CZ. 9. Traffic on this website is increasing so I don’t think it is as simple as people leaving forums for social media. There simply are more venues these days and traffic has been fragmenting between them. It’s called competition and some old forums got complacent. The main thing is the old forums are no longer the only game in town, yet I bet their banner fees have never gone down. It is all about eyeballs per dollar and they must not be cost effective / price competitive in today’s environment. Google Ads pay the bills here, so I am not quite working for free. The hourly wage is nothing to brag about however!
  10. You guys need to read the original post. You don’t actually apply here on this thread. If you do, you will get no results, especially since the thread is five years old.
  11. Metal detector purchasing boils down to: "What do you want to use it for?" and "What is your budget?" It sounds like you want a general purpose (coins, jewelry, relics) type detector - the most popular type. Saltwater detecting and gold nugget prospecting are more technical types of detecting that have models more specific to just those tasks, but they also tend to not be so good at general purpose detecting. You can use a general purpose detector for beach and nugget detecting also though the results will vary depending on the model. The following brands have been around and have proven service capability for those that live in the U.S. In other words, pretty safe bets. I have taken the liberty of listing a mid-range model for each brand for you to consider. XP is kind of a one trick pony so I listed their Deus model as the default but more expensive option. I have linked to manufacturer product pages for you. Ignore the MSRP prices you see as most dealers discount below that. That being the case I have added internet discount pricing for reference. Bounty Hunter (First Texas) - Land Ranger Pro $287 Fisher (First Texas) - F70 $449 Garrett - AT Pro (waterproof) $552 Minelab - Equinox 600 (waterproof) $649 Nokta/Makro - Makro Kruzer 14 (waterproof) $649 Teknetics (First Texas) - Patriot $399 (same detector as F70 above) White's - MX7 $549 XP - Deus $799 Given so little information I am just taking a stab in the dark here and suggesting a list of affordable "safe choices". I can do just fine with any of these models for general purpose detecting. At the least it weeds the field down and gives you someplace to start without breaking the bank. Hooking up with a club is a good way to see what other people use and maybe a chance to handle a few and so Gary's advice above is excellent. In addition to my reviews mentioned before, check out the Reference Library for lots of great free information.
  12. The Fisher F19 is basically an upgraded Gold Bug Pro and it does include a volume control. It can still be found for as low a price as any of the Gold Bugs at a couple vendors. There was a clearance special a while back with a dramatic price drop from $699 to $449. The F19 is easily the better buy for people who can find them at the $449 price. F19 Owner's Manual page 19: Volume Use or to adjust the volume setting when the VOLUME menu option is highlighted. The default volume setting is 7. Press to increase speaker volume. Maximum volume is at setting 20. Press to lower speaker volume. The minimum volume setting is 0, no sound. With volume set to 0, the Target-ID and Depth Bar Graph will function as normal, but the detector will not emit a sound when targets are detected. The overload volume signal will always sound off in the event of signal overload, even with the volume set to 0. Because the F19™ is so sensitive to even the smallest iron targets, the detector incorporates FeTone™, Adjustable Iron Audio, a feature to reduce the volume of iron targets to minimize user fatigue. Volume settings 10 - 20 are available to control the volume level of iron targets. As you increase volume from 10 to 20, iron-volume changes from silent to maximum. Note that, depending on the V-BREAK® setting, iron targets may induce V.C.O. tones; in this case, the V.C.O. tones in the iron range (ID 1 - 39) will also have the same reduced volume. At each of the 10 - 20 volume settings, nonferrous target response is maximum volume. Volume control applies only to motion target detection. Volume changes do not affect Pinpoint volume. 15. "The Portable Antiquities Scheme's database holds records of archaeological finds discovered by members of the public. These are found while carrying out a wide range of activities including metal-detecting. Our first record was made in 1998, the half-million mark was reached in March 2010, and our millionth object, a Roman coin from the Seaton hoard, was recorded in September 2014. Our database is easy to search, and your search results can be filtered to find just the data you want. You can find tips on searching the database here. Our records are available with differing levels of information, depending on your user account. The Scheme is very willing to give research access to researchers who register with us for higher-level access. An ever increasing body of research is now being conducted on our collated data, enabling some very high-calibre work with great success in obtaining AHRC and other sources of funding. We do not record details of objects found by professional archaeologists (details of these can be found by contacting your local Historic Environment Record) but we do occasionally incorporate data recorded by other institutions. In March 2010 we added the records of the Oxford University Celtic Coin Index (CCI- prefix) and Cardiff University's Iron Age and Roman coins of Wales project (IARCW- prefix). These records complement the data that the Scheme collects itself, but the information has been imported from a different data model, so images and inscriptions are not always available. We do not have access to the objects to improve this situation. Most of our images are available under a CC-BY licence. We encourage people to use our data and images as widely as possible. Enjoy!" 16. Large VLF coils are usually a poor seller / risky proposition, so I think retailers got caught short ordering too few of these initially.
  17. Good going with the gold claim Peg, and best of luck to you in Florida this winter
  18. Tough crowd! Since it was mentioned I went ahead and added the latest internet prices for reference since MSRP really is a joke. Fisher would do well to drop the MSRP prices on the their website at least since a casual observer might be put off. The internet prices are more or less accurate as of today but if reading this in the future do double check pricing as I can’t keep up with the changes. I upgraded the photos and reformatted it all for smaller screens. I also added links to the new Metal Detector Database entries for each model. These are the most popular Fisher models. I left out utility and oddball specialty models.
  19. You nailed it in the second part of your statement. Because it is not a matter of using the technology over time and learning to appreciate it. I have used wireless coils and simply disagree there is any benefit to them at all - for me and my purposes. I see them as a net negative to be avoided. I also fully appreciate that you think there are advantages to be had - for you and your purposes. It is not a moral question, a right or wrong thing, an argument to be won. It is personal preference, and I prefer wired coils. You prefer wireless. It’s that simple. If I want to buy multiple detectors I will buy them. I don’t want to buy another detector when all I need is another coil. I don’t accept that just because some companies overcharge for wired coils that the price issue is moot. Standard size wired coils should sell for under $200 and larger than 11” sizes between $200 and $300.
  20. I wonder what the true failure rates were on the CTX? There would be manufacturer defect stuff like a bad o-ring. And there would also be operator error stuff. I am sure most CTX units that got used in the water never never leaked but beyond that it is hard to get a handle on. There are lots of examples on the forums that leaks do happen, no question about that. I am sorry yours was one of them.
  21. Handheld Underwater Metal Detectors Assessment Report - February 2014 FOREWORD The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) established the System Assessment and Validation for Emergency Responders (SAVER) Program to assist emergency responders making procurement decisions. Located within the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) of DHS, the SAVER Program conducts objective assessments and validations on commercially available equipment and systems, and develops knowledge products that provide relevant equipment information to the emergency responder community. The SAVER Program mission includes: Conducting impartial, practitioner-relevant, operationally oriented assessments and validations of emergency response equipment; and Providing information, in the form of knowledge products, that enables decision-makers and responders to better select, procure, use, and maintain emergency response equipment. SAVER Program knowledge products provide information on equipment that falls under the categories listed in the DHS Authorized Equipment List (AEL), focusing primarily on two main questions for the responder community: “What equipment is available?” and “How does it perform?” These knowledge products are shared nationally with the responder community, providing a life- and cost-saving asset to DHS, as well as to Federal, state, and local responders. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Handheld underwater metal detectors assist public safety divers with locating metallic objects underwater by providing visual, audible, and/or vibration alerts when these objects are detected. In August 2013, the System Assessment and Validation for Emergency Responders (SAVER) Program conducted an operationally oriented assessment of handheld underwater metal detectors. Eight handheld underwater metal detectors were assessed by public safety divers. The criteria and scenarios used in this assessment were derived from the results of a focus group of public safety divers with experience using handheld underwater metal detectors. The assessment addressed 18 evaluation criteria in four SAVER categories: Capability, Deployability, Maintainability, and Usability. MODELS EVALUATED JW Fishers Mfg. 23. The Tesoro Metal Detector Information Magazine was last published in 2010. It has lots more than just descriptions of Tesoro metal detectors. From the forward: WELCOME to the 22nd edition of the Tesoro Electronics’ Metal Detector Information (MDI) magazine. The MDI has been a thirty-year journey to share stories, provide field tests, and guide customers to the metal detectors that satisfy their hunting needs. This MDI has a slightly different format. While we still have many guidelines and a few stories, we are reprinting field tests for all the available Tesoro products. These are field tests from previous MDI’s or other sources, so you will see “reprint of” by most of the bylines.
