Expert Detectorists Skills and Habits
LipCa replied to Sourdough Scott's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Many of the ones that never score very often are the ones that seem to give up if they don't find anything in the first fifteen minutes..... -
Ray, Really nice nugget. They way you describe the site, I would have expected typical "pocket" gold. Really rough. But this is a well worn piece. More like placer gold. This was "placer pocket"? More like high channel?

Do You Leach?
LipCa replied to Mike Hillis's topic in Gold Panning, Sluicing, Dredging, Drywashing, Etc
Where's the option for "none" I wouldn't expect many on this forum to "leach" as it is primarily a detecting forum. -
Garrett Pro-Pointer AT - Waterproof To Ten Feet
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Garrett Metal Detectors
I see you can Pre-order on Kellyco...... (not saying that is the place to order) See complete description there too. I don't know, but it appears that their main feature(as they state) is that it is waterproof to 10' -
RIP Jerry Hobbs

I never met him but I hope he's looking down on the courts when the final decision is made. R.I.P. -
Something you don't see mentioned is the original MineLab Sovereign. I still use one for coins. A dinosaur but I like it. Works great on the beach too.

Garrett Pro-Pointer AT - Waterproof To Ten Feet
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Garrett Metal Detectors
I don't see it on the Garrett site yet.... Wonder when and at what cost? -
There used to be some good "notch" detectors. Is that the same principle that the newer ones use?

My sons keep asking when I am going to take the Electroscope out and look for gold. I have never tried. I guess I should.....
-
Steve, Your last sentence is probably correct. The Electroscope that I bought 20? years ago functions for me whether it is on or not. Battery or no battery. I have to tell a short story..... Years ago, a new neighbor had heard that I had "witched" my well and asked if I would try for him. So, I told him "no guarantees". He was in an area that had little water. I located where several small feeders came together and called him out to look at where it was. Again, I told him "no guarantees". He said "I feel pretty good now" and scratched the ground about 6" from my marker. There appeared a small 1" square wooden hub that had been driven in the ground, As it turned out, he had called an elderly lady that was well known for "witching water" and had her do it too. That was wooden hub was her mark! He did get several gallons per minute which was good for the area....

I can find a buried waterline with a couple bent rods .... Just like many, many others... how can that be explained??? I do have an Electroscope and have found coins with ONLY it... no detector. I have followed "something" for hundreds of feet only to have a quartz vein come right out of the ground on my line... Why? Can I find something someone has hidden for me to find? Probably not.

Looking forward to the complete site. Had trouble getting some of it to load? Took A LONG TIME to load up and some of the pictures never finished after 8-10 minutes. Don't usually have a problem. Might be on my side? I don't know

Drones For Aerial Reconnaissance
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
My son in Nome bought one and is looking at software to do ground imaging. He said he can't legally use it now? Or, can't use it until next year? -
Steve, I have never had ground go from good to bad like you mentioned in your first post. Was that with a PI or VLF or both? If it was with a PI, I probably haven't used one enough to experience it.
-
All the problems I've had has been with NEW detectors. From defective coils to detectors the do not function correctly. I sold Tesoro and Minelab in the 90's and don't remember any problems then. Only in the last 15 years. Warranties covered everything, no problems.

Tune Out Nails - You Will Miss Gold!
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
I dig all the nails I can stand. Especially in the mine tailings area. Those old wooden sluice boxes were nailed together and gold nuggets worked their way into the cracks. Nails mean gold to me. -
It's good to know these new things about a PI .... Certainly different than a VLF. Here's those pics of the "disappearing" signal:
-
Thanks Mike. Yes, we did get quite a bit of rain. Everything was really running this am.

I guess that is like digging up something with a VLF and still hearing something in the hole for a while. yep... in the last week the ATX has about paid for it's self. Will post a picture as soon as I can get my wife to snap it...
-
The other day I was out with my ATX digging quartz/gold specimens. I had just dug a small piece when I got a really nice signal a couple of feet away. I took 3 or 4 inches out and it was still there. I took another 3 or 4 inches out. Good signal still there and I know it's gold now. At about 12 or 13 inches down, I see gold in the bottom of the hole. Still a good signal. Now, the hole is too narrow to stick the coil in so signal has always at ground level. Time for a beer break until my boys can work their way down the hill to run their GB2's over the hole and see the specimen still in place. They're almost here so I get up and run my coil over the hole just to hear it again. Just a whisper!! It was a great signal a bit ago.... What happened?? BTW, it was a piece a few grains shy of a half an ounce with about three quarters of it gold.

Garrett ATX Strip Down & Rebuild
LipCa replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Garrett Metal Detectors
You know, the duct tape I have sounds off under a coil. What type of duct tape did you use?
