Rating The Tesoro Umax Models
Joe D. replied to Bill (S. CA)'s topic in Compass, D-Tex, Tesoro, Etc.
So, a bakers dozen sounds about right! But who's counting!! All uMax's but two?! Stuff's all spread out, and tough to find now due to some remodeling! I was in that detector collector phase (used), but hopefully, I'm on the downhill side of that! Its a tough addiction to conquer!! Not all brands are as much fun to play with, and easy to use! They may have lost just a bit of spark to me, now that Monte is gone, as his knowledge and dedication to them has helped me along; among others! Still so much to learn yet!ππ -
Amazed At How Quickly Whiteβs Discussion Faded
Joe D. replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in White's Metal Detectors
πSorry Simon, wasn't throwing you under a bus, just more of a service announcement, and what I've run across! But... I heard the Manticore is reeeaaallly deep, so.... is that one of your holes??? Was it photoshopped and edited to look like the states? and I think they changed the head on the guy too!! Now that I think about it, my White's will go that deep too...π€π€£ππ -

Leaving holes at our beaches is frowned upon! Even though kids and others do it all the time! Of course we get singled out and blamed, just like at parks; not that there aren't detectorists leaving some also! That stupid "big deep hole" Tic Tok challenge is still around with the teenagers, and I've found myself filling in a few of those, so that no little kids get suffocated in one! Asinine! Not easy to do with a scoop and feet, when they bring multiple full sized shovels with them for the beach assault! Of course i detect the holes thoroughly first! Those haven't been this bad though: -
Rating The Tesoro Umax Models
Joe D. replied to Bill (S. CA)'s topic in Compass, D-Tex, Tesoro, Etc.
Yeah, X3, and X5 are both Fisher built as I recall?! And you can still find coils for them fairly easily, albeit not cheap! Thought about acquiring them, but wanted to keep in the Tesoro stable! The X5 seems to appear on Ebay more often than the X3! And the X2 even less!πππ -

Got more than a few, and love them all! But yeah, dual disc on the Tejon is hard to beat! Always glad to see any discussion on here about Tesoro's! Also got a couple Troy X2's; also Tesoro made! Gonna have to thin the heard at some point, so stay tuned!πππ -

Thanks Carl, That's good enough for me! πI'm very happy to hear that those were good years for you! I appreciate the response! I had a big gap in my detecting years; 83-2014, and wish I had continued through them!π So probably why I've gone backwards on a "few"π detectors from a couple companies to fill in some gaps, etc! I really enjoy them!πππ -

Always glad to see you chime in Geotech!π This being an oldish post that was resurrected, it's always nice to get a refresher on some info, from one of the original employees! I still own three White's detectors! My modded TDI SL's being my favorite beach detectors now! (One's a backup)! The other i have is a Mxt All Pro, but not for the beach! Maybe you can review a bit more history of your experiences while you were there, and what you think Garrett is doing with the remaining tech and ideas! If I missed this previously, or am overstepping on bad memories, NDA's, etc, than no need to expound!! Just curious, and may be more suitable for a separate post!πππ -

And there is the predicted response from Mr. Steve!πI must be psychic!!π³ββοΈπ€ Now if only I could apply that psychic ability to my detecting, I would be posting a lot more!!π€π Life is way to short to sweat the small stuff KD8! On to bigger and better finds, with whatever you choose to swing!!πππ -
Not Much Interest In USA Units Lately

I don't know if Steve, or anyone else here, threw Whites under any busses! And you have some valid points! But besides the fact that he knows the business inside and out; he's a big boy, and if he feels the need to justify anything here on his forum, I'm sure he will! All I can say is keep it a clean fight!!π€£π€π€ And thanks for some interesting conversation, I haven't posted this much in a while!!ππππ -

Joe D. replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in White's Metal Detectors
I understand what Simon was trying to convey! Good or bad, people wanted lighter machines with a broader range of usable conditions, that kept pace with the technology! And the demographic has changed too! Many younger people grew up in a "disposable electronics" world, and don't mind chucking something after a few years of use! Take a look at any charity shop, flee market, etc... and you'll find many "gadgets" that still have life left, but look klunky or dated! Trust me, while I appreciate my TDI SL at the beach (it's well balanced, considering its weight), it's not waterproof, or really saltproof for that application, like some of the newer machines, and has zero warranty now!π΅ Same with my Tesoro's! With the exception of my Sand Shark; but no lightweight, and no warranty! Like I said before, obviously White's made some bad decisions, as did Tesoro, etc.., build quality wasn't the final straw! But I do appreciate an ultra lightweight machine that i can swing all day, if the conditions warrant, and not feel like my elbow and shoulder are going to explode! Aging sucks, and so does the fact that finds are not what they used to be; at least in the US anyway! So for the companies still left, their catering to what "most" detectorist say they want; young or old, newbe, or seasoned, prospector, or one or two time users! Or else they will fold too! Also, the surviving companies have learned to diversify! Some long ago, like Garrett, who "could" survive just fine without the hobby division, but have invested much recently to keep it alive! And I'm happy they did, as the last, real US competitor in the game! One final note, just to keep me on track with the post title, is while those older machines still do the job, they are just not relevant in many forums, as far as people talking about them much! Good or bad, everyone can make there own judgment, but most like the leading edge, and excitement of new machines, and if that's what keeps the forums alive, than "it is what it is"; my favorite saying BTW! Even on forums that tend to "cater" to the older machines, the posts tend to be few, and far between! Monte'sπ (RIP) Forum, AHRPS.org, Is a good example! Even there, they have had to relegate all the defunct companies into one heading now, for lack of posts! And he was a diehard "old detector user"! It is what it is!!πππ -

White's had multiple problems! There was not just one thing that did them in! But there "new" old stock is sparse these days, and there is a healthy used market! I have three of some of their best i bought used! Unlike many others here, I had a large gap in my detecting years, so the analog and digital "play by ear" models appeal to me, and always will; among other modern one's i have! Steve and others "in the know" have gone over all the issues previously, with those companies that are now defunct, and I won't second guess their near half century of wisdom on the subject! I'm in it for the fun, and I like the people I've met along the way, while doing it! Just sorry I missed the really productive years, and great innovations, when they were new! All good things have there time, and end! Nothing new there!πππ -

Does Your Scoop Affect Your Pinpointing?
Joe D. replied to mn90403's topic in Metal Detecting For Jewelry
Much depends on how and where you carry/place you scoop! I have a wood handle on my TRex, so I low carry with the scoop to the rear! Some like to shoulder carry, but my arm goes numb like that! The bigger coils, and PI's can be more prone to interference, as they have a bigger field of view! As far as when pinpointing, I'm not fond of using big coils to pinpoint, not that it can't be done! I prefer a small coil, or my actual pinpointer! I've found i am much more efficient with a pinpointer, In rapidly finding a target, and moving on! just keep the coil away, as it can cause the same issues!πππ -
Keep us updated!πππ

I have a few name brand units (no cheap knockoffs), and they all work well! I like mine waterproof and quiet! But if your unsure after researching what your best match is, you can always buy used and lessen the wallet hit! Same with their full size cousins! It's rare i buy any detecting equipment new now! That way I can buy more!!πππππ

Awsome Chuck, I'd be all over those dry and shallow riverbed areas! Unlike the beaches here, the goodies aren't washed away easily, or covered every year or so in 10 ft of fake beach sand! Think I live in the wrong place! Also beach finds used to renew, but between the lack of quality drops from newer generations, and the sand coverage, it's getting sparse! I also miss the coin meters, as at least you could bank on some clad most days! Progress? Says who?? Hope you find some treasures; And NO bodies!!β πππ

Welcome Dave,π Yeah, Steve, the administrator/owner, just put that in place, as we were getting alot of spammers hitting the site! Keep posting and you will be editing like the rest of us soon enough!π Great finds, and welcome to the forum!!πππ BTW, I've noticed that before with rings, corrosion will get in between the stone and setting, and when disturbed, the stone or stones can drop out! Also when digging!π You have a very familiar detecting name!!π€π
