  1. A tit bit, when I modded the Monster as a pinpointer, I accidently found ML have molded a clip into the support that goes up to front of battery holder. This clip holds the coil cable neatly and firmly as it heads towards the shaft a 4 or so inches from where it screws into the control box. Have again attached the photo of the Monster Pinpointer to illustrate this.
  2. So true, nothing has changed in 160 +years, even though we get about in 4 wheels and have these new fangled electronic thingos that look into the ground.
  3. For me definitely walk-and-sweep is more betterera............. Crikey Northeast have you done some time up here in the wacky north.
  4. Have found no benefit using the ferrite to the Zs operation in the country I prospect, in fact only use quick track when the mode I change to forces me to, as when recently after the upgrade. In fact have not quick tracked nor used the ferrite all season until the upgrade. Is my method right or wrong, the manual tells me it is wrong. I guess it is just one of those individual settings we gather to handle the ground we detect. All I can suggest is try detecting without using the ferrite or quick track as a test, but a warning do not put your Z into the back of the ute whilst it is on. Bouncing around in the back of the ute puts the auto GB data that your Z has gathered way out of wack, done this a few times and now ensure I turn the Z off before I turn the wireless remote off. I just feel the Z is more stable if the auto GB or now semi-auto GB is allowed to collect its data without quick tracking as you do when you use the ferrite. Works for me at present but always keen to try anything that ups the productivity.
  5. RDD, Many thanks, myself I started many years back with Fugawi then switched to Oziexplorer once it became available. Powerful tools that help us, hopefully ML will expand on the GPS capabilities that is in cooperated in the Z and give us this mapping ability right there in front of us out in the field, until then I currently use a Ozi android app on a smartphone with GPS built in, with the PC at home running Ozi to "make" the maps. Our Government Mines depts. are making this easy now with their freely available Geo, Tenement etc customisable maps that can be downloaded and exported into Ozi. A tit bit, the Fugawi name apparently originated from "Where the #$%^ are We"
  6. Exactly you got it out there, you`ve planted the seed and as there are similar type competitions for coins who knows what may eventuate. I found a token on a NQ goldfield that was marked with a Townsville NQ OZ Detector Clubs marking, a few years back, as it wasn`t dated, obviously had been there awhile and was amongst detectable gold to the PIs, I assumed it was from the VLF days. Now is it amongst my scattered "unusual find" collection, must look, find and follow up.
  7. RDD, of interest perhaps, do you use moving map software such as Oziexplorer on a mobile device, with geological and topological maps, to assist getting to those researched locations?
  8. Have followed this thread with some interest but not with any surety such an event would get many participants. In NQ OZ we have an annual gold panning competition that does get the interest in. Wasn`t until you commented the below the grey matter cut in. Why do we compete in panning competitions and yet have not much interest in detecting competitions? Perhaps the answer is we are competing with ourselves when we chase that elusive nugget, gold hunting seems a fairly lone pursuit and maybe that is the answer. Just getting out there and chasing the yellow might be all the competition we need.
  9. Yeah, went looking for 1mm but Hardware store had 0.8 in stock, so went with it, have done many hours on 19 this season just love it. But make sure it is Lexan you get, Nurse Paul had what he thought was lexan adhered to his 19 but it is only Perspex. Took me bloody hours to convince him he`d been conned........
  10. The weight of 0.8 or 1mm thickness of lexan is less then the available coil cover even combined with the silastic adhesive, the big advantage of the lexan is because you adhere it to the coil it stiffens it up considerably. This leads to a coil that is not affected much at all by knocking rocks, ground, trees etc. Of course if warranty is a concern this is probably is not the way to go. I now am replacing all coil covers as they wear with this mod. With nearly a season behind this mod on the 19 & 14, is the way to go for me. Wish Phoenix had told us about it 30 years ago. A warning ensure you get Lexan or poly carbonate not Perspex, Perspex cracks splits and is just not suitable.
  11. Good stuff, got the main PC booting again (good dust clean out) and thought what have I done, DPs blues all gone. Logged on and all is well.
  12. On you Jen the 5000 is no slouch and that`s for sure but the Zs got the edge once its gained your confidence.
  13. Thank you 1515, MLs broomstick coil add on made this so easy, illustrated also by SSs "witches" mod. The Monsters ease of use brought about by its auto sensitivity & GB, make it a turn on and go no fiddling detector and that is what pinpointers are and must be. I believe from the use I`ve had with it in the last couple of days, once and if the after market coil manufacturers start producing coils for it, I`ll go with say a 8" round coil for extra depth on it to make it a even better "pinpointer". Goes hand in hand with the Z19, which we know has very poor air depth thus one must have wide Z holes to prove up that "iffy" signal. The extra weight being compensated by the less wide hole one has to dig, plus of course its capability to be quickly turned into a full size VLF. To clarify something and illustrate why this Monster mod is working for me, the deep gold I am currently getting is under an old mining camp which lays below a worked reef, the old fellows naturally built there camps down on the flats near water holes if possible. The type of soil (black) on this particular flat has allowed the camp rubbish to sink deep brought about by the soil developing deep cracks in the dry then becoming almost a bog in the wet. Thus anything that helps to cut the effort to remove that rubbish is a boon. To be a bit mischievous, it is ironic that the "dud" Z 19 is being assisted by the "dud" Monster. Please remove this Steve if you feel I am being a bit too mischievous but I`m just a wee peeved with a minorities attitude towards the worlds premium detector manufacturer or to be more general, anyone that has a go in a positive manner.
  14. Well returned from a mission, nicked of right after posting the Monster pinpointer. I got the idea from Steves VLF detector pinpointer mod thread a fair while back, and just love the Monster in this profile as well as a VLF detector, its auto GB and auto sensitivity has made it the pinpointer to accompany the Z 19. Saved me a lot of digging once down to where the Monster was picking up the signal there was no need to widen the hole, put pick away and proceed with a bar. As long as you kept the bottom of hole clean so as to keep the coil of the Monster at even height it excels in this job.(as is the case with all sensitive detectors) Just left it set on all metal and 12 on the sensitivity control. I`ve rarely carried my pinpointer a Whites TRX whilst hunting gold it just did not help enough to bother but the Monster Pinpointer will be hanging off my back pack whenever I swing the Z19, for me tis the way to go. No drama Steve with the thread name change, much more appropriate and is so easy to do just a piece of broomstick, or PVC water pipe plus easy as to revert to the full stem. Strick & Mn, I am not knocking the Whites TRX it is a brilliant pinpointer that I always use and will continue to use when shooting coins but its just been Monstered in the gold pinpointer dept.
  15. Whoops main PC was down and used the Missus old XP notebook and post ended up repeating, message come up about Silverlight being an old version, sort of scrambled post even more then I usually do.
  16. Found the pinpointer is not up to it, gave the Deus a go but it interfered (coil being on seeking RC) with the Z now will the Monster save digging those Z19 holes so big.
  17. You`ll note in JPs directions to turn on the GM with the coil facing likely EMI source to allow the noise cancel to operate correctly, this is very important. I mention this as one of the videos making the rounds show the turn on done with the coil on the ground. The GM1000 is no toy for sure.
  18. http://md-hunter.com/minelabs-new-patent-a-detector-with-magnetic-field/ Is this the patent??? that is involved, "perfect" discrimination the Holy Grail we seek.
  19. Ya forgot ya bloody safety boots (flip flops) , left em on the kitchen floor...........
  20. Being a journalist, I guess he was doing his thing, without getting the hands dirty so to speak. Bit of a coincidence he was there for that interview before the murder. Pffff who knows, hopefully we`ll get to have a casual chat about it one day over a drink or two. Vic
  21. The Z is much more than a machine for small spongy gold. The biggest advantage it had over my 5000 was its ability to handle the ground better then the 5000. Much quicker detecting because it does not give the same number of false signals the 5000 does and that is partly because of its superior auto GB. The 5000 and the PIs before it very often cancelled out gold in auto GB thus most users I know used them in manual. The Zs auto GB doesn`t suffer this anywhere near as much thus can be confidently used in auto gb. It also has on most gold got better depth. But I stress this is my take on the Z over the 5000, I also have a GM1000, and for its made purpose it is a top little detector but not the producer the Z is, nor is it in the class of the 5000.
  22. Hey I`m a bit of a stick in the mud, what`s snow? But I understand what your on about that empty space between the ears, I wear glasses to keep em apart.
