  1. The Z is only their first ZVT detector, as the SD2000 was their first PI, they will improve on it no doubt. Just imagine the improvements if it were to be as the jump from the SD2000 to the GPX5000. I would think they are well into the R&D of the next improvement, be it increased sensitivity or depth or lighter coils. Pfff be tops but going on their past.
  2. Mn, not sure about us getting most the hand diggable gold (crikey my spell checker doesn`t like diggable) go back 100 years and I suspect the old fellas thought that. Maybe the day is close when a detector is not influenced at all by mineralization, the Z has shown it is a step closer to that compared to the PIs, the PIs were a step in that direction from the VLFs. I just feel tech now is astounding compared to say just 40 years ago and as you say we can`t even dream of what it will be like in the future. I just remember back in the 70s a big majority of the population where I live and I suspect elsewhere thought we were spaced out buying a box of electronics we believed could find gold. Just could not be so was the consensus, today that sounds ridiculous to us but it was so. No no, I feel now that the popularity of using a detector will bring on even more advances. Some of grandkids will be having a good natured shot at us for leaving it laying around while in frustration the only thing we`ll be able to swing is a walking stick. Me and I suspect a lot of coil swinging members my age are early adopters and why the hell not, has been a super magic journey,
  3. Patience me lad patience, but that`s easy to say. Chuck you`ve got it bad for sure.
  4. Hmmm, wonder if this "self adjust" concept will be taken another step into hearing aids. That`d put that industry on its head, no expensive time wasting consultancies, then hearing tests, then fittings.
  5. Yeah, I very bother rarely with the manuals GB procedure or ferrite, just go with the Z as is same as any other auto gb detector, but I concur with JP and have found the semi-auto gb seems to be the go, I say seems to be, as nothing is written in concrete in this game. Right or wrong pffff.......... it just gets the weight for me.
  6. Good rant JR, but I think we are left behind the times a wee bit, our soldering irons, silastic solutions, etc and don`t forget the duct tape fixes everything solution. But it is bloody good fun, me I just feel so privileged to have lived in the electronic gold rush age, may we all score a hundred and still be swinging big coils, little coils or whatever to get some weight.
  7. From my experience I would not purchase a 2nd hand detector coil without trying it. To date the longest lasting coil I have had is the 14" GPZ 7000 coil. No other coil of any brand I`ve used for so many hours has gone close to its 3 plus years. I guess that has to do with the treatment we give them, belting about on rocks around trees, grass. Coil material cracks, internals come loose, shields fail. Best way I`ve found to avoid some of this is to go for Phoenixs PC adhered directly to coil skid plate, works a charm. A tid bit- I recall a story from another prospector where he killed a snake with his coil, they have a hard life thus check them out before buying is the best bet.
  8. I had the 16 inch mono that appears to be of the same vintage. It was my general go to coil of that era on the GP3000, fairly sensitive to the small stuff, lightweight and with good depth.
  9. Your not wrong Fred, no longer do mosquitos annoy me but I can hear thunder 10 miles away. Also that annoying door open warning buzzer on our modern day car doors, no longer need to disconnect it.
  10. We are having a very unusual cool November in NQ OZ, good for detecting. Normally peaks around the 40-43deg C but getting only to 33deg with 16deg in early morn. Had a bit of a giggle at JWs Sydney harbor bridge starting here and ending up in NZ, crikey I thought it only went as far as Tasmania......... Suspect with all the extra Hurricane activity you folks had in your summer, we are going to cop much the same over the next few months. Anyway whatever the weather brings as long as there is a wee bit of yellow mixed amongst it for all of us, we will suffer whatever.
  11. https://newatlas.com/nura-headphones-review/52214/?utm_source=Gizmag+Subscribers&utm_campaign=5eaf25216b-UA-2235360-4&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_65b67362bd-5eaf25216b-92422477 Maybe of interest to those of us that are fairly deaf to part of the normal sound spectrum. I just love tech and how it can help us in so many different ways.
  12. Try it, like you I thought the coil being so close to the electronics would be a drama, but it works a charm and is easy as. Remember tis VLF & small coil, certainly such would be a problem if PI.
  13. BB if you feel like coming over this way, your welcome, bring your culling gear........pleeeeeeeeze.......
  14. Bummer, nice nugget I`m not guilty, just green with envy. I know Paul disappeared down that way for a month or so, come back with a big smile, get him in a corner and interrogate.
  15. Good find, benches are for losing things on for sure. The only way I`ve found to solve this is never clean your bench, work on the floor.
  16. Like you MN, be lovely to swing a Deus lightweight Z, but if I`m onto gold soon forget any aches and pains. Tis getting that coil over gold that is the major still for me too. Although I really have little to complain about with the Z, it is more ergonomic then the PIs were, a better producer and the hip stick has offset age a bit but I know time is always running and it gets us all.
  17. Paul, no unseasonal cool weather has me out there again, just day trips to backyard. I don`t know whether you folks have Mongrel boots over there, but I am giving a pair a go, they are just pull on elastic sided leather work boots, a wee heavy but good ankle support, comfy and importantly no metal. They are very similar to Oliver boots(OZ brand but made in China) which I believe you folks have in the US, normally I go with Olivers but local store had the Mongrels in stock.
  18. Back in the 70s the price of the newly introduced metal detectors was roughly a third the price of a new family sedan, it proved to be a wise purchase, back near 4 years ago I bought a GPZ7000 on their introduction it too cost roughly a third of the cost of a new family sedan also, it has proved to be a wise purchase. Not just in the gold value found did these these detectors and all the others in between prove to be wise purchases, but for the sheer enjoyment this hobby gave me, a truly magic trip that continues. Hop aboard if it is the hobby for you, you will not begrudge the research and development that goes into giving us these top proven tools.
  19. Off topic????? Crikey I`ll even supply the prospecting boots with at least a pound of brass eyelets.............we`ll transmute the brass to mellow yellow no worries.
  20. Hey Paul, found another trash filled site just loaded with that lovely heavy stuff down deep, immediately thought of you.......... come on down No No put down the Supercede..............
  21. It aint broke as Paul says, plenty of prospecting 4ms that have off-topic sections, their prospecting sections aren`t kept on topic thus they are really irrelevant and overall have little to do with prospecting. Tis the best as is. Whoops hit submit as you posted Steve. Just happy members like it the way it is.
  22. To go a bit further, maybe into the realms of science fiction, as Davsgold suggestion of optical fibre may sound a wee different to us now, back in the 70s-80s, finding gold with a metal detector was something deemed a wee eccentric, "impossible" one can wave around a massive squeaking box with massive stereo headphones on your head and pick up gold............... As was solar panels and portable fridges in RV vehicles. Hell RV vehicles were non-existent almost. Perhaps tomorrows detector may have fibre optics employed, it may be operated by a mobile phone application linking via wireless. Me I`ve been on this trip awhile and I discount nothing even HUD on our glasses, because our sight is perhaps a better sense to use then our hearing to get those elusive signals. Reg, I know where your coming from I`m GWs old fella and he thinks he`s top hat cos he can run rings round his old fella with a Z, but like you I`ve the runs on the board, and here hopes we are batting at a century. Man the detectors and gear we`ll be using then, bring it on ML now........and not just ML come on all MD Manufacturers.
  23. MN, bummer of a day but you fired back positively WTG.
  24. For me the weight is not such a big concern, that is offset by the Zs performance, but I`m all for a full featured GPS in cooperated. With a droid like sunlight viewable screen allowing a moving map program such as Oziexplorer or whatever the user wants. I doubt the GPS chips weight adds much nor does it consume enough power to require a weighty battery, one only has to look at the light weight of our smart phones to see what modern electronics can be included without adding significant weight. From my long use of both I just believe ML are on the right track including a GPS, but not the outdated limited one the Z & CTX has. I also understand from past threads that I probably belong to a small minority that appreciates from practical use the strength of combining a gold detector with a GPS for the terrain and conditions I chase the weight in. For me the first two items I prepare, charge etc for a prospecting trip are the detector and the droid-OZi-GPS. Keep and develop the GPS ML.
