Patton Desert Warfare Training Camp Finds
mn90403 replied to AZSilver's topic in Metal Detecting For Coins & Relics
What camps are these? I had an uncle that was training for the Pacific at the end of the war. His eyesight was not good enough to be a pilot so he trained on radar which was new at the time. After my mom passed I found a group of about 40 letters from him where he stayed and trained at camps in California and Arizona. Most of those fields are gone now and I don't really know where the exact location would be. Sadly he was young and was in a plane that was shot down in the last couple of months of the war in the Philippines. Jolo Island was where it crashed. I've thought about going to Camp Clipper but it is quite a drive for a day trip. Mitchel -

Will you adopt me so I can get a chance at that nugget? That's killer stuff. -

You need to tell the wife you need a kiss. She would be the only one interested in giving you that. -

What did you do with that one on top? -
I've done some research on Camp Essex. Have you been there? A major division-size camp, Camp Clipper, was located north of Essex, with its northern boundary located inside the Preserve, north of I-40. A support division, including an ammunition dump, several large warehouses, and a military hospital, were located at Goffs, along with an emergency airfield a mile north of the hamlet. Later, the training grounds were expanded and renamed the California Arizona Maneuver Area, and remained in use until mid-1944. At least one million soldiers spent time in the area. Tanks and other military vehicles roamed throughout the desert, conducting exercises in the valleys of the Preserve and surrounding areas.

Minelab Equinox 900 Or Manticore For Prospecting
mn90403 replied to Gerry in Idaho's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Now you have done it Steve. The BB subject has come up. Those 6s and 8s sound so good on most detectors. You have a 'feeling' of knowing what you are going to see but you just have to sift through the scoop and see it anyway. What do they sound like with the new 900 and Manticore? What do they sound like with the Axiom? Can they be ignored without missing gold in the settings? They are the crusty pennies of the goldfields. -
Perhaps ... that is why they are on the list but the more you see about the 900 and the success I've had with the Equinox 800 the more ... I'd like to see the IDs spread out. That wouldn't be a bad thing for finding gold with it either.

Simon, You set up the poll. I've got a billiard game to play and then get a new tire that got a nail in it from the desert trip. Then I could go to my kid's regenerative farm day and then take him to a movie and then ... Chuck, You have enough money but do you have enough time?

I like the separation of different targets that now read closely together. I think this addresses my sandwich coin/metal issue. Size and metal type influence the VID so there is probably an audio enhancement. Certainly good if you are not a dig everything type of detectorist or a detectorist on limited time. And where do the crusty beach pennies go on the scale?
-
What will you buy for your Christmas/birthday present to yourself? My list has the Axiom, Manticore and ??? (900, Legend, 6000/GM, kid detector, ...) I can use a detector at the beach much easier than in a goldfield but I really, really like finding nuggets. haha

I Wish The Pocket Watch Was Attached!
mn90403 replied to Zincoln's topic in Metal Detecting For Jewelry
It reminds me of a very fine chain I found at the beach years ago. I didn't hear it but I dug a coin. This chain was hanging from my scoop glittering in my flashlight. The best part of it was that there was a diamond hanging from it. Later I laid the chain out on the surface, and I could not detect it with my 5000. -
Which one of these detectors will find a penny at 4"? Which one of these detectors will find a silver dime at 8"? Which one of these detectors will find a beach slope (once wet from the tide) quarter at 10"? Which one of these detectors will find an 9g gold wedding band at 9"? What do you want to find?

Simon, There is a BIG item missing from your list of things to sell or give up if you need more detector money. Your wife has the most value. Does anyone have a wife like Simon's willing to let him spend all that time and money on detecting? She would be very valuable to any of us out here that has a wife that grumbles about a new Vanquish. My wife is willing to let me spend a bit more if I find more. The metal detecting companies need to clone your wife so we could just spend, spend, spend and never go home to do chores.

That may be your computer screen making it look more 'blue' and perhaps my camera too.

Legend with 11" coil is now $509!
-
I saw Steve's announcement for 1:30 PM.
-
I think the Manticore has 'longer' ears than previous Minelab coils but I'm not sure. This allows for easier compression without breakage. I see there is an announcement time.
-
Strick I just saw this and you are not alone in having a kink in the cable. I noticed one in mine years ago whenever I'd change a coil. I had to fit the cable around inside the housing and if you were not careful it would pinch when you closed the cover. I haven't looked at mine in a bit but it's time to get it back out on a beach again. Mitchel

Why demonstrate the first Manticore in Arizona? Then, why not test it on nuggets in this video? Was that one of the targets?
