  1. I found something similar years ago and I have the feeling that it is some type of 'offering' that is given to the ocean/beach/waves. Or ... someone did a theft, and they threw it away so that the remainder of the loot could not be traced! Good find.
  2. Well done to get out after the storms and stretch your legs. Thanks for the details of the hunt.
  3. Thanks for making me envious of Victoria again. My 3-week trip only got me about 5 grams if I've forgotten correctly!
  4. Well done. Are you expecting any rain over there?
  5. I found mine and one that fit her on the same night I decided to propose. It is quite unexplainable really. We did buy a new one for her before we got married a few days later but it was fortuitous. I posted the story up almost in actual time but she didn't find it as remarkable as I did. I 'planted' a ring the next night for her to find on the beach and here we are two kids later!
  6. This is a good way to end the year. It has been over a month since I found a gold ring. This one is a nice 14k band that weighs 7.5 grams. It has an inscription in it that says July 26, 2013. I should have written a date in mine but I used one I found at the beach for my wedding band. On a previous hunt this week I found some nice silver. Happy New Year! The GOLD: The Silver The blue pendant with fine chain literally hurt my ears. I've never had something do that with the Nox at 21. It must be the silver cage that holds the glass. The fine chain broke apart as I was digging. There was a separate chain found also.
  7. I just saw the contest! haha Thanks for making it available.
  8. I use the 5000 harness with the solid clip hip-stick and a bungee loop. The loop is placed just around the handle, below the screen. The detector, battery and coil hang from the bungee 'weight less' to my arm. It easily adjusts to a slope to keep the coil level to the ground. I just use my arm to move the coil. In my other hand is my pick. I remove the bungee when I start digging a target. I've been doing this for years without a problem and I now do it with my CTX on the rare occasion that I use it these days. I should take a picture and it would all be simple.
  9. My son has heard about some of the problems everyone is having with their detectors. He decided to make one. He assures me that the battery charges overnight and the controls are easy to use. The ground balance is good, and you are only limited by your imagination. We are going to try it out tomorrow! He designed this on his own (he'll be 5 next week) with the help of a Christmas set. It will probably work as good as some of the detectors you have been getting for Christmas. Orders have been through the roof so please, no more orders at this time. He needs time to play. Free Standing View Side View Light Weight Merry Christmas everyone.
  10. GPAA has claims there and open land is around also. If you are new to detecting and need some help you might want to look up Bunk. He is a bit south of Quartzsite.
  11. My 800 control module had to be replaced when the On/Off switch broke. There is certainly something going on with their Malaysia manufacturing. I wonder who that sub is there. Does your literature say Manufactured in Malaysia?
  12. To follow up on Strick, what position is it in? On or Off Now we have to be more specific. Is default like the 800 with discriminate On? I say when I press the horseshoe I'm turning it Off. That turns On all metal.
  13. Those are wise words. Having run 21 Marathons to completion and countless other mountain and training sessions to get ready for them ... training matters. If you are not in shape and you compete you are subject to injury. That said ... we gotta hunt when we can. I sometimes go out to a bad beach to be in practice and training for the days when it is good. The arm will fall off in the middle of a good beach if I don't.
  14. I researched the place and told everyone at my club about it but it didn't get much interest. We went on our own with the boys and had fun. Now I'll disclose a secret. I used my 800 using Field 2 and Park 1 with the 11" coil. I found the box with the two sunbaker pennies, the U.S. and the buttons. My wife used the Gold Bug Pro (at the time we bought it it was a Steve's top pick) and she found the Silver Dime and the steel penny and the other things in that display. This throws a 'wrench' into the NEED for the latest technology in order to be able to find good things. haha Old technology still works but it would be nice to see what you Manticore will do out there. The place is huge and we couldn't make it to some of the places we wanted to go because I didn't have my 4WD and had the kids and I didn't want to get stuck.
  15. As you can see we went on Wednesday and didn't find many coins. My two pennies were sunbakers that I would not have seen without a detector. I was using my 800. My wife found the dime and steel penny using her Gold Bug Pro. Do we really need the advanced tech? Probably. I didn't use my 6" coil in the nailbeds we found which may have changed things. Would a D2 or Manticore find more? Maybe.
  16. Good find. Someone lost a nice ring. That is a beauty. I've found a couple of rings in playgrounds while my kids have been playing but not that nice.
  17. Thanks Gerry. I know you went to a place where others have been and you still did that good. Impressive. How many hunt hours does that represent?
  18. I've found some live beach rounds before and I was told to call the police. They came and took them from me rather than me go to the station. If you take them to a station, they call the bomb squad.
  19. Yesterday we took a 3+ hour trip to go detecting at a WWII Army Camp. It is the well-known Camp Essex/Camp Clipper. We got there just before dawn so that we could watch some meteors in the dark sky. We saw a few and then it was time to hunt. The temperature at sunrise was about freezing. We geared up for a walk and let the kids stay inside the car when I heard a quad approaching. I met a fella who said he had been detecting the camp for over 40 years. He gave me a couple of suggestions on where to hunt and he was on his way. I was on my way staying to my plan. After a walk about and getting some success, we went to another location based upon his recommendations. We had a little bit more success there and then drove around for a bit, getting dusty and then returned in the late afternoon for some additional success and to watch the sunset. We don't know much about the ID of the items other than the coins. One penny is a 1941-D, one is 1938-S, a 1937 dime and an unreadable steel penny. The buttons are unknown to me but are just general issue? There is one additional button I can't identify. The prize is perhaps the US lapel pin which has a screw backing rather than a stick pin. The most unusual would be the clip with 2, 4 round unspent cartridges. Are they of collector value as is or should they be cleaned up? It is 'hard' to include detected only items in the collections. Sometimes you see a cool item before you detect it. Sometimes you see a sunbaker after you detect it. It all ends up in the pouch. I now know a lot more about detecting on nail beds and bottle tops. Will the new detectors really help? More on that later.
  20. Thanks Norvic. You need to update your equipment list. We're going out to try and see a meteor before dawn and then hunt. The kids are too young to swing but we'll have fun in the desert. Depending on where I go it is 2-3 hours drive. Time to wake them up.
  21. In my experience with the Explorer coils and the CTX (which I broke many years ago) Strick is right. They used that same coil 'design' on the Equinox, and it is faulty. I lobbied on these forums many times to make the coil ears longer, but I see on the Manticore the 'ears' have been shifted to the shaft. You now have a fork if I am seeing it correctly. This will keep the integrity of the coil even if the ears/fork breaks. A new 'fork' can be inserted in the bottom of the shaft, but it may be glued so strong that is not possible. The coil has no ears now to break. This fork may be a bit longer than needed but if made out of the right material it should not affect the swing of the coil or its balance. Those of you who have them can tell. I'm not on a list yet. Going back to the old coil ears style, mine were too short and the tightening bolts with the big heads were actually torquing against the ears where they attached to the coil. Sometimes you could not tighten the shaft in position so you would break the coil in the shape of the tightening bolt. The cracked coil got a curve from the thumb screw right at the coil. When this happened to me and my CTX 17 I had to grind off the remaining 'ears' and attach an external holder with tie straps and it still works. At the time I researched a solution years ago I didn't even know you called the coil attachments ears. If those ears would have been a bit longer, I am convinced they would not have broken and would have still been flexing on my 17" coil today. As you can see, I'm a bit obsessed with this coil attachment problem and we'll have to wait and see if this new 'pinch system' from Minelab will stand up to time and detectorists.
  22. That is a lot of hunt time. How much beach did you cover? Was it all in tide sands?
  23. No life insurance for you buddy! Merry Christmas.
