  1. Steve had a comment on it early on when I asked him. He seemed to say that the emphasis for the Manticore would not show an improvement over the Equinox. Maybe he has something else to say now or I paraphrased him wrong. We'll see.
  2. It might be the Lord's Prayer, but I don't know the symbolism of the razor blade.
  3. Does anyone have an idea what this is? It has some writing on it that didn't come out with the way I took the picture. It seems to be latin or Italian?
  4. This place reminds me of a small-scale Ballarat. Do we have any Canadians on the forums? B.C. history brought to life in Gold Rush town of Barkerville - Victoria Times Colonist
  5. Those beaches with many targets are a delight. Thanks for sharing the photos of the recoveries. If you didn't find them then we would never see them.
  6. I wish you lots of detecting time with little drama and appropriate finds. I know if you get the time in you'll get the goodies.
  7. Ah, I have been lately and it does help. I push up the Fe2 and keep the recovery at 6. You can even go to 7 and it becomes less chatty.
  8. Great job on the gold. I should have gone down the coast an hour or two but ... I know what you mean about the Nox being chatty lately. I've had to reduce my sensitivity from 23 down to 21 or 20 to keep from going crazy.
  9. That is really great stuff. I'm glad that you do the research and know what you are finding. Years ago, when looking for gold in remote places I know I found objects that would be clues for the right people who hunt relics, but they didn't mean anything much to me. I wonder how often a detectorist stumbles across a site without a real clue what they've found? Was it a mining camp? A stagecoach camp? A calvary camp? A railroad camp? Hunting camp? Trading camp? When you layer over the top of it all the hunting and farming activity over the top you really need to know your history in order to know what you are finding. Sometimes we don't have a clue!
  10. You have to be there to learn the beaches under different conditions. I was just hoping to learn more! haha
  11. Friday night I got out to what I was hoping would be a great night of detecting ... but I had my doubts. My doubts were based upon the direction of the hurricane. It was approaching Los Angeles from the S and SSE which isn't a great swell maker. I managed to get out before the low tide and I put in an all nighter (8 hours) on a favorite beach and a beach oriented to take maximum advantage of the storm direction. The waves were really pretty small. I managed one silver ring and one silver bracelet. My favorite beach produced 5 rings including the silver and two chains. My 'opportunity beach' which has produced some good jewelry in the past had very little for me on Saturday morning. It was still an enjoyable night with the clouds and spritzes of rain to break up the heat.
  12. Everything gets returned and it is one of the retailer's problems. Just like storage lockers, freight salvage and other inventories. The most efficient way for these retailers to get rid of it is bulk sale. Where to Buy Amazon Return Pallets - Search (bing.com)
  13. I was feeling it last night and couldn't make it out. It was time to recharge my battery. One night this week I was out and I killed the 800 battery but that was after 3 sessions.
  14. I belong to several 'clubs' and many of the members 'guest' people in all the time. Sometimes they guest in more than they should, but the guests don't know it. Many people that were previously members of these clubs continue to visit the claims and they could be technically a claim jumper or a member in the arrears. No one can really enforce the status very good except by frequency. If you frequent a place where you have questionable status, then someone may track you down. If you were to find a large nugget on a club claim, then THAT becomes more valuable than the nugget. Other members and non-members would like to know that gold is still there. They would go back and/or join to give it a shot. Sadly, most club claim members keep their finds 'secret' as per some gold finder rules. Don't tell people where you found it. It is an aspect of detecting that affects us all.
  15. Luke, that is a really cool find. Congratulations. I was a Comstock member for a year. Good club with meetings in Reno. I saw Chris Ralph speak there. I've found several crowns at the beaches over the years and even more 'toe tags' so I think you are right about the crown. My wife and I went to Downieville for a weekend trip a few years back. We were on and near the river when it was very low. My wife found a 5 gram button and I found a 11-12 gram nugget covered in mercury. We threw it into a fire to burn it off before we got much mercury on us.
  16. Last night I got in a 4 hour moon lit beach hunt watching the moon disappear into the clouds, fog and Pacific. That is reward by itself without finding much valuable jewelry. This was the 3rd night in a row for me and I'm pretty dialed in right now finding small and deep targets. One was a tiny computer chip and another was an aluminum can bottom at over 20 inches deep. I know metal detecting is like riding a bicycle but if you are a mountain biker or a mountain runner you know that more is generally better. Much of this summer I didn't have a reason to go out more than 3-4 hours a week or less sometimes but now I have been averaging over 20. How many hours a week do you detect?
  17. It was time for a hunt ... but I've done that each of the last few nights. Last night's hunt was better on the counts but it came up a bit short on the value. The first ring of the night I thought was my best until the next morning. I was finally able to read a 14kt GF. Bummer. It came in as a 21 so I'm not too surprised. Some of the other rings. An odd mix. The one missing the 'stone' is silver. Here are more pictures of the loot. The bottom of the aluminum can above was found down over 20 inches. I hate those digs but they sound so good. I've also included some pictures of previous hunts just to show the difference in nights. This last tray includes 3 rings and of note was one of my best 'spoon rings' ever. What is a spoon ring you say? It was once a silver spoon that was chopped off at the end and shaped into a ring. Notice the overlapping design which would allow for some adjustment and expansion.
  18. Good work Steve. You make it look easy. You need to remind everyone you are an Alaskan Miner. Your lessons were hard won and not easily transferred to other miners. I've been to Nome, and it is unfamiliar ground. You can't just go to any ol working mine and help'em find gold. I'm glad the Axiom worked as well as it did. It certainly seems like a new arrow in the quiver for avid prospectors. Mitchel
  19. I looked and looked and couldn't find a page. What value did it have? I know my DY chain and tag come to $2 thousand but this has to be more.
  20. Well done on your hunt and your spot. I'm surprised you left it but it is night. haha Are there gators in that pond? It is going to be hot for Labor Day. Between hot and wave energy, I'll take wave energy!
