  3. That is a pretty amazing find - congratulations! Were they in a container, or all in one hole, or just scattered about?
  4. It was taken with my camera but shot by either you or Jeff.... too long ago, I don't remember! I'll assume it was you, so thanks Brian! Ganes was good times while it lasted...
  5. All the current Fisher models have been added to the new Metal Detector Database with User Reviews I have Bounty Hunter almost done, and have barely started on Teknetics, but have placeholders created for most current models. Please help others by leaving your own review of any First Texas model you have owned. Thanks! Fisher F75 Special Edition
  6. The ORX metal detector has a new function, it is called the hashtag button, you will see it is located in the top left of the panel, the # button is very important as it has a dual function. Function 1 - Program select mode: To access the programs press once to scroll through the 4 factory programs and 2 user saved programs. Once your chosen program is displayed there is no need to make any further button presses, the ORX is ready to detect. Function 2 - Select Salt mode: To access the Salt mode press and hold the Hashtag button for 3 seconds and the word “Salt” will appear on the screen next to the right of the frequency read out. To torn the salt mode OFF repeat the same procedure. Salt mode changes some internal parameters and allow smoother detection on areas such as black sand and some wet beaches, in some cases lowering the sensitivity will also help. 7. If Tesoro does close their doors, which appears to be the case, what happens to your "Lifetime Warranty"? Warranties are only as good as the company behind them. In theory if a company goes away, so does the warranty. However, warranties are a financial obligation that can't be tossed on a whim. For Tesoro to completely ditch all their warranty obligations I believe they have to go bankrupt and prove they do not have the financial resources to back the warranties any longer. Otherwise a company can just close their doors and walk with money in the bank that would have funded future warranty work. I am no legal expert in this stuff, but I do think there is hope on the warranty front still. Tesoro may be looking for a buyer or some other avenue under which warranties will continue to be honored. Until and unless a full bankruptcy occurs there is hope. On the flip side anyone buying a Tesoro right now and assuming they have a lifetime warranty better think twice. I do wonder about the liability of the dealers who still have these in stock and are still selling them and advertising them as having a "Lifetime Warranty". This is an area that dealers would be wise to resolve with Tesoro immediately. From http://www.tesoro.com/service/warranty.html "Our lifetime warranty covers defects in material and workmanship for as long as it is owned by the original purchaser. The warranty excludes batteries, damage caused by leaky batteries, cable breakage due to flexing, wear of the searchcoil housing, and leakage caused by the condition of water seals on underwater detectors. Also excluded are instruments which have been abused, altered, or repaired by an unauthorized party."
  8. This tidbit from a post on Dankowskis.... "...we are now working on the final arrangements of our service center in the USA. You will see an announcement from me hopefully soon. Here I guarantee that no one will be left out in the dark in terms of after sales support. One way or another, we will always stand behind our products and valued customer...whether it is through our service center or us directly."
  9. Equinox Owner’s Manual page 8: ”Battery Maintenance - Lithium-ion battery performance may degrade if unused for long periods of time. Fully charge the battery at least once every 3–4 months to prevent this from occurring.” Probably applies to most any rechargeable batteries. Remove alkaline batteries from those items that use them to prevent damage from leaking batteries.
  10. Been a big fan of the Sun Ray Pro Gold myself. Not that different than Grey Ghosts but have dual volume controls and leather instead of vinyl ear muffs. The phones above work with nearly all stereo and mono detectors. Minelab however requires special wiring to insure the external speaker is shut off when headphones are used. Many aftermarket headphones fail on the Minelabs, but there is a special version of the Sun Ray headphones made to work with any detector, including the Minelabs, the Sun Ray Pro Gold CTX version. These are the ones I actually own, and highly recommend since they work on every detector I have tried them on.
  11. Hi Bill, Hmmm... I must have missed something. There are many alternatives to the wireless headphones included with the Equinox 800. They are standard Low latency Bluetooth headphone, Low Latency being the key. There are many threads on the forum that discuss alternatives. Here are a couple....
  12. Garrett uses a proprietary system and the MS-3 headphones only work wirelessly with other Garrett products. The Z-Lynk system is a good system for detectors that lack any wireless built in.
  13. Yes, one battery basically runs the detector completely. The other boosts the power to the audio circuit. The one that runs the detector and audio normally goes dead first. The other will have remaining power, and swapping them will get you more detecting time. Not as good as replacing batteries but will save you in a pinch. To discover which battery is the “master battery” try running the detector with only one battery and see which compartment will run the detector by itself. You may need a near dead battery in the other compartment to complete the circuit? Not sure about that part but it does seem I once lost a battery and still ran the detector on the other one.
  14. You found it. Be sure and see this thread on stereo headphones and compatibility issues with the adapter cable. Another thread on cable compatibility issues

  16. Thanks Keith, it may turn out to be but is still a work in progress. It's not like it has not been done before but I think it has promise. I am doing this in large part because in the past this website was more prospecting focused. The slow pace of the industry made it pretty easy for me to just review every new nugget detector that came along personally. Now that the website is expanded into all phases of metal detecting there is no way I can review them all, and frankly I am not inclined to doing many more reviews in the future anyway, being content now with what I have. This will hopefully keep the review bandwagon going by opening it for all to contribute reviews in a more organized fashion than is possible of the forums. I have Tesoro done and Bounty Hunter, Fisher, Garrett, Minelab, and White's mostly done. Barely a dent in Teknetics. I made a few changes to the menu structure that put the new database front and center and my older reviews more in the background. Eventually I will have it all crosslinked anyway.
  17. I get it Jeff and I just wanted to offer reassurance the Deus can do the job. Upscaling is fine if you dig all non-ferrous and when it comes to extracting non-ferrous from ferrous the Deus is second to none. It gets annoying in parks chasing silver coins though so it just depends on the situation. I really like the Deus in many ways and get tempted to get another, in large part due to the ease with which it can be collapsed and stuffed in a rucksack. But I have to just keep telling myself no whenever this "have to get a new detector" urge strikes anymore.
  18. I have run the Deus and Equinox head to head as Dubious describes and there is very little an Equinox will see that a Deus will not. The main difference for me was the Equinox has more accurate target id. For instance, the Deus is far more prone to upscaling aluminum in bad ground and calling an aluminum beavertail a silver dime. But it would still detect the target. Upscaling aluminum was a bad problem for me with all my single frequency units in my ground that Equinox all but eliminated.
  19. The Rutus Alter 71 was introduced in 2017 and is still in production. The Alter 71 is a VLF metal detector aimed primarily at coin, jewelry, relic detecting plus gold prospecting. The Nokta/Makro Impact is a "selectable frequency" detector that lets you select one frequency to use from several options. The Alter 71 frequency adjustable between 4.4kHz and 18.4kHz in steps of 0.2kHz. There does not appear to be a Rutus distributor in the U.S. at this time (Dec 2018) but enough of these detectors are finding their way to the U.S. to be listed here. The price as listed in U.S. dollars is approximate depending on exchange rates. "A metal detector with the capabilities demanded by advanced users, but provided with preloaded settings which make it ideal for beginners also. The Alter 71 detector can not only be used as a static detector for very deep low frequency work, but just as effectively as a rapid, dynamic detector for locating small non-ferrous objects using high frequencies. The flexibility of the detector is enhanced further by the option of dual mode, using the benefits of motion and non-motion mode simultaneously." 20. Hi Morgan, You have a PI and a good mid-frequency model so a good unit over 30 kHz would round out your detector collection. My personal favorites at the moment are the Gold Bug 2, Minelab Gold Monster, Nokta/Makro Gold Kruzer, and White’s Goldmaster 24K. They will all do the job just in slightly different ways. The GB2 with 6” coil has always been a safe choice.
