The article describes one 25-year-old fisherman catching sight of something gold in the sand, which turned out to be a medallion. He let his father-in-law know, and soon a number of the town’s residents were engaged in the search, which began in September.

Here is a story with a few more details:

Once the first photo of the discovery was posted on Facebook, the news spread throughout Venezuela. But the remote location of the area, widespread fuel shortage and quarantines due to the coronavirus prevented a national gold rush.

A chemical test commissioned by The New York Times on a link in a gold chain discovered on Guaca Beach indicated that the piece was probably manufactured in Europe in recent decades.

The test showed that the chain was made of high quality 18 karat gold, uncommon in Venezuela’s domestic jewelry production. The alloy would have been difficult to produce in pre-modern conditions, said Guy Demortier, a Belgian-based jewelry authentication specialist.

Chris Corti, a British based technical jewellery manufacturing expert, examined the photographs of various objects discovered in Guaca and said they appeared to have been commercially manufactured in the middle of the 20th century.
