  1. The trouble with auto controls/setting is that they can make a good guess for the ground but don't know the size , type and depth of the gold to get the best setting. My working life was spent in control room and had to take over when the auto controls could not cope because situation do exist that designer don't know. Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplanes spent million on auto controls and failed, but it took a human to save one incident that they had.
  2. We tried the rake but no good as there was to many small flakes as the ground was less than 6" deep the grader would of been no use. By the way the location was remote that the fuel for a bull dozer transport was out of the question an there were two large rewarding patches that I found within an hour of walking distance that needed our attention. These did not have many bits in the 1/4 to 1/2 oz range but some larger specimen more than made up for that as most were around the plus or minus gram size.
  3. "Where there is trash, there is also likely gold still remaining, since trashy area's are usually avoided by detectorists (hence still tons of trash around). " Had a good run right up to the cans but had to stop here.
  4. I have seen the promotions of Minelab since the ML1500 up to the Zed. I believe their facts are correct in promotions but they are always done in the best suited condition for what suits the said Detector even if the are far removed from some condition that exist where we detect. If these are real where is the Zed comparison and if the Monster is good in these results it looks like very mild ground condition were used.
  5. You will be sorry 😀 You are now hooked for life. By the way the ring's scape value is $626.57 in gold today.
  6. 10 gm is more than a quarter of an ounce. If this is your aim to get one you will have to set a bit of time for doing a bit of )testing in new ground. Very few people achieve getting a lump unless they have a bit of luck on their side. My first patch got close to a kilo with 8 nuggets above an ounce and a couple of specks. In WA Aus. one patch the wife and I got over 500 bits with nothing over 2 or 3 gm. If you are after the odds of getting 10 gm or above you will have to specify the area that is relevance to your district. (GPS readings help 🤣 )
  7. Happy The admin. placed this post here in the Metal detecting for Jewelry as it will be seen more by the members that are dedicated to this style of detecting, more knowledge can be shared. As for the dry sand " Almost all good finds were within 15 metres of the step/path leading onto the beach." and "Money was most frequently found within proximity of bottle tops (new money) has been my experience. Let hope some more insight is posted on the topic. Metal Detecting For Jewelry
  8. The old and flatter ground the bigger the gold spread, the reverse applies. Have a look at my post "Nugget spread" ....LINK....
  9. I was under the belief that minelab was an Aust company and there for if they were going to favour and country it would be Australia (Shaking my head Minelab) As I don't scrappage old site of other prospector there is no need for me to have the last edge detector to hit their spots first as my spots are not known by people I don't trust. I have found the second generation of a new model is the best once the have outed the bug that they did not know off until the get feed back from their customers.
  10. The best mod I did was convert the Whites 6000d VLF to SAT in 1980 for the wife together with hip mounting it as in this old photo.
  11. Northeast I had no trouble detecting in salty ground (It was worst when damp) if the VLF detector had pure TR discrimination (not motion disc. and could be set to balance the detector in this mode by using the discrimination to ground balance the detector and stay in TR every signal had to be dug. I was fortunate that most were gold and very little junk.
  12. I have found a large number of gold jewellery but have only found a small number of non 9 & 18K ones plus a few 22K rings. So if you get the same ratio as me you will be more than happy when you get the 9,18 & 22K rings, best of luck. Gold Hallmarks • .999 or 999 - 99.9% gold - 24 karat • .916 or 916 - 91.6% gold - 22 karat (917 is used too for 22 karat gold) • .833 or 833 - 83.3% gold – 20 karat • .750 or 750 - 75.0% gold - 18 karat (18ct 18kt 18k) European market. • .585 or 585 - 58.5% gold - 14 karat (14kt 14k) European market. • .417 or 417 - 41.7% gold - 10 karat (10kt 10k) United States market. • .375 or 375 - 37.5% gold - 9 karat (9ct 9kt 9k) Australian market term is 9ct for 9 carat. • .333 or 333 - 33.3% gold - 8 karat (minimum standard for Germany after 1884) The marking V20 14k means that the article is made with 14 karat rolled gold. The V20 mark specifically refers to the volume of total weight of the article that is comprised of 14k gold. In this case 1/20 of the total weight is 14 karat gold. Rolled gold is a very similar process to gold filled.
  13. At the beach sand dig all as JOE said is best way to go BUT on good lawns discriminate is the way to go if there are a lot of signals.
  14. It only takes one target to make the day especially if it an unexpected one.
  15. That looks great and a good idea for ferrous junk. If I made one I would use a super magnet and stick it on the underside of the Frisbee to make it easier to remove junk.
  16. Port Philip Bay side tide drop will be less and more sheltered due the size of Melbourne's bay. The Bass Strait Ocean Side is exposed to wild storm waves and has full tidal swings. Take note of your finds locations in water and hit it again on Good Friday low tides.
  17. It is too long ago to remember detecting Sorrento, but popular beaches provide more completion from other local detectorist. Your logic seem right with the exception " young people who do a bit of surfing, body boarding " has been better for me as they tend to have lost more and more value than family groups. However my beaches have been one and all from Smiths beach Cowes Area to Lakes Entrance in Victoria but have found more gold rings in one old beach in Queensland in greater Brisbane. Your choice of Equinox 800 will be good for eliminating junk.
  18. Gm90403 I usually rest from detecting in West Aust. in QLD. Gympie is one of the spots that I really like. Way back in the early 1980s I met and saw some very nice gold that a local jeweller had found in the region.
  19. There is a lot of good books there. I would suggest that you spend a day or two at a known location and see what you be detecting and how your equipment reacts. This will enable you to know what the books are talking about and save you a lot of time learning how to find gold.
  20. Well he found two sunbakers. That would of been enough for most of us.
  21. I hiked at Mount Bartle Frere East Trail Head many years ago. The district has gold history but I would not put in on your list as I drove from Cairns did the climb and return back to Cairns in the late afternoon. From what I saw it is very dense and steep in that area. QLD guide below and the Mt hold the record for rainfall in Aust. I would look for historical sites that are relatively flat and dry. Climb to the summit of Queensland's highest mountain (1,622m) provides a challenging way to explore this part of the World Heritage-listed rainforest of the Bellenden Ker Range. This is not a race, so allow yourself two days to walk (recommended), climb and enjoy this trail. The fabulous summit views include the township of Innisfail and the coast to the east, and to the west, the undulating landscape of the Atherton Tableland. Climate. Although no rain gauge exists on the mountain, data at nearby Mount Bellenden Ker suggest an annual average rainfall of around 8,000 millimetres (310 in), and an estimated potential maximum as high as 17,000 mm (670 in), both of which would make the mountain one of the wettest places in the world.
  22. XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Wrong post 😵😵" Meant to be in Celtic Hoard Found Post " 🍷 This might give info. http://arizonaoutback.ipbhost.com/topic/14403-x-search-by-nugget-finder-new/?page=2
  23. GB_Amateur I had some luck looking for " old horse racing tracks " in farming districts that the race course don't exist to-day. I used old parish maps which showed them prior to 1930 here in Aust. Hope this gives you another choice.
  24. The Aust. great divide passes through QLD and has a lot of features that most Australians will never see. Have a look at this wikipedia link https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Dividing_Range The range is 3,500 kilometres (2,175 mi) in length and has over 45 National parks some of them are massive and diverse.
  25. As Simon said there some good spots in Aust. I have spent 10 to 15 weeks travelling all around Aust. since 1980 visiting most Aust. National Parks. Just remember that there is a lot of nothing between some of them. The best advice I can give you is take note of the climate for the time and place you pick and remember Aust is close to the size of USA. I spent 12 weeks with the family in USA in 1977? did Honolulu, LA, Grand-Canon, Chicago, Niagara falls then down the East coast to Orlando. The Grand Canon was snowed in and the fog allowed very little yo be seen, Niagara Falls was frozen over totally, so not much luck there but spend a few weeks in Orlando and the kids loved it at the time it remined me of the Sunshine coast in QLD during winter.
