  1. The freeze was over today so I went out for about 2 hours on an old kids camp area, built in 1932 it's about 80 acres. I hunt this place a lot and I'm never disappointed . I was running 19khz, which I never could do in the past, toying with different settings at each hit. Man does it find pull tabs, probably my fault for digging but better safe than sorry. found some clad, zinc, Shotgun shell and coal (never ceases to amaze me how that rock hits like something good). 2 cool tokens. one green duck corp. token and one Philadelphia Transportation company token (pre 1964) Almost forgot 2 paint brushes never dug those before!! And the ever popular earth worms AND WAIT FOR IT !!!!!!!!!! WHITE GOLD AND DIAMONDS (Not really just a fake) But man did my heart almost stop when I saw it poking out of the dirt !!!!! THANKS MY NEW FRIENDS for all the help and tips.
  2. I've been playing with the 3 tone mostly and run the disc. between 4 and 5. Also I flip flop the tone breaks fe at 15, gold at 70, non-fe at 45 Just to see if the sounds make more sense to me. I'm not stuck on that though. I want to play with the gen. mode more but at that particular site it was the worst thing I tried. I think my biggest issue was ground balance, very difficult to balance in that place. In super wet ground beach mode works pretty good. As for depth its pretty amazing, I have some larger coils and I think that factory coil beats them. I really like the sounds on this machine. once again thanks everyone for all the tips, Funny how life is still a learning curve.
  3. That's a better find than a handful of silver dollars, I love my compadre, that thing never ceases to amaze me.
  4. Ordered my new 9 inch concentric, should have it by the 4th. From all the info you guys have given me and the positive reviews on this coil it should be a winner.
  5. GB check this site, it might be English http://www.silvercollection.it/englishsilvermarksXIWWW.html
  6. This is for all the new and just starting detectorist's out there. For many years I hunted with the detector I could afford, mostly cheap or used. Did I want a so called better detector? YES, was I positive it was going to make me find more things? NO. That's where I was stuck. Did I risk my very hard earned money where the guarantee was low? Answer is no !!! My early years were tough and with paying rent and other bills, I had to go cheap to to keep enjoying what I found to be the most rewarding hobby I had. Today I've been very fortunate and with hard work, I now can afford any machine made. But I choose not to run the most expensive because of the old guarantee thing. I have found most of the things i'm after with a lower priced machine. What I'm getting at is you don't have to spend a ton of money for the satisfaction of finding cool stuff. There are dozens of great lower priced detectors on the market. Please do not get caught up in the price/technology thing. Starting with an entry level machine will make you a better detector. It will force you to learn the sounds of treasure. Learn the basics first, you just might find that the so called cheap machine is all you need to satisfy your lifetime enjoyment of this hobby. Don't be ashamed of what you can afford, in most cases once you learn, you can out find someone with an $1000 rig. And I've seen that happen. One of my favorite detectors was only $150. For many years I found many wonderful things coins, relics and such. To me the best part of it was the finding. It was not what I dug, it was the questions I asked myself. Who was the person who lost the item, What was it really like in 1790 ? (others might disagree) But these are the most important things in detecting not your machine. In today's technology based society we loose site of what was behind us and only focus on the future. Most everyone on this site does not earn a living off of detecting and do it for the same reasons I do it. The love of being outdoors, the magic of history, and the wonderment of how things got into the ground we dig. We all started at the bottom, don't be discouraged because of a so called lesser machine. SO TO ALL BEGINNERS AND EXPERIENCED remember it's about learning and enjoyment of this great hobby !!!! HAPPY HUNTING TO ALL
  7. Welcome oro, Georgia is a beautiful state. Wish I could help on the boat thing but I gave up boats years ago. I'm sure you will find a way to get it done and when you do please post some photo's of your finds. we all like to see good stuff. lots of great detectors out there, I suggest you talk to a shop to see what best fits your needs. GOOD LUCK
  8. GREAT TOPIC But a touch screen I think would be a little to sensitive. I'm always touching stuff I don't want to on my i phone without gloves. Then the glove thing on an i phone, It just wont work, It only likes your naked finger. They do make special gloves which I tried, but once dirty they no longer work. I work outside a lot and when my fingers get cold it won't operate the screen. As for screen wash out in the sunlight, that's a 1000% guarantee. Last but not least is extreme temperatures which will lock your screen up until the temps go up or down. As for scratch proof I think most MFG's could use some form of sapphire screens or an overlay. I really like the idea of scratch proof.
  9. I just rent a clairvoyant dowser for all my deep gold needs. Much cheaper by the hour 😶
  10. The movie theater scene was filmed 15 minutes from my home in a town called Phoenixville, PA. One of my school teachers was an extra in that scene.
  11. Welcome Django, Don't be afraid to look at the Nokta multi kruzer. Very user friendly, great discrimination and goes deep. I'm having a lot of fun with mine. They run around $636 and they often throw in a pin pointer with it. Good luck with your decision.
  12. That's an awesome find, The closest I've come to pirate treasure was an oar lock off of a row boat, I'll keep trying. Thinking I might have to move to Florida ( weather sure is better). It sure is great that people still find some of history's greatest losses. Cheers to Mr. Martinez
  13. Congrats on joining a fabulous site, I'm sure we can help you with any questions you have. Looking forward to seeing some of your finds and hearing your tales. Welcome aboard Billy!!!!!
  14. I think I'm going to buy a concentric tonight. I've always had great confidence in the round coils. Just not sure of the size, was thinking 7'' but the more I look at the 9'' the more I like it. I do hunt a lot of grown up areas and woodlots and think maybe the 9'' won't be that bad. My old compadre (please laugh now, It's OK) with a 5'' coil is a great set up. (you can laugh again if needed) (I can also send you some towels if you just expelled some liquid) HA HA I started on an 80's coinmaster. And I liked it until about 2 years ago when it passed on. RIP I'm hoping in the next month or so to do a little story about the property and Miss Cindy she's a tough 80 something farmer, with great story's. I need to get a recorder so I can document our conversations. I'm not a great writer by any stretch but I'll give it a try. I think you guys will enjoy it.
  15. GB, Miss Cindy as I like to call her gave me two arial photos to look at, they were taken in the early 60's.Thanks for that link that will come in handy in the future. As for the material in the ground (NOT ONE PIECE OF ALUMINIUM) imagine that!!! Tons of nails, Tons of coal ash and brass like I've never seen. When I get a good hit it's usually brass. when I dig the target I pinpoint coal slag, nails and my target. I'm getting usually 10 items per hole. I think my trash pouch weighed 5 pounds. I'm searching in 3 tone, and bounce freqs when I hit a good target to try to disc out by ear. My gain is between 89 - 91 I don't want to loose depth because miss cindy said her husband regraded some portions around the 1650 spring house. I still want to hear the iron, but I try multiple settings on the same target to see if I get different results. If I drop the gain to 89 I seem to lose about 2 inches in depth. But practice makes perfect. If this endeavor fails I'm going to rent a skid loader and buy a big sluice box or a trommel It should be a quick way to filter out the junk. HA HA Just a couple pieces of brass items I'm finding. My confidence level is rising now that you gave me a solid way to deal with it.
  16. I pretty much have as long as I want to hunt there. I have been cherry picking the 1 1/2 acres only because I was trying to find some quite ground. I've been going not at a fast pace but normal for me, I slow when I get a good signal and go from there. I'm going to try a 5'' coil and see if it helps. I've just never been to a place this loaded with metal. Also this place has never been hunted, the lady that lives on site has been there for 60+ years and never had anyone ask for permission. I think I need to just take a deep breath and get a plan to force myself to just search maybe a 10x10 area at a time. The nice thing is she has shared some very old photos of this site, which helps because things have changed alot over the years. Once again THANK YOU ALL for all the great tips. I'll keep you posted
  17. I'm thinking 18th century wax seal fob, missing the seal. The unusual things are the greatest finds.
  18. Last Sunday I detected a new property which has me discouraged. This place is an early farmstead that has a 1650 structure still standing on it. The property was once about 800 acres and is now reduced to about 10. The soil has my multi kruzer going crazy. so far I detected about 1 1/2 acres. I'm dealing with not dozens of nails and small iron and slag but hundreds of this stuff (no joke). There is not one square foot that my detector is quiet and i'm getting readings on the display from 10-12 to 57-65 to 84-91 all in one square feet and every square foot. I've dug multiple times and found targets ie nails, 22 bullets, lots of brass and zinc all in the same hole. My question is how do you guy's deal with a place this hot ??? I have tried 5 - 14 - 19 frequencies and dozens of other settings still the same thing. Don't get me wrong i'm finding stuff but do you just dig everything and let your ears rest later? I had high hopes for this property but I think the 20th century farm practices has this place ruined.
  19. I'm rating this #1 for friendly and helpful people who don't judge and give extremely helpful info on all topic's. It's a great site for someone like myself who just likes good honest info from experienced detectors. Easy choice to join Detectorprospector.com If you are just browsing and see this please join up and see the difference from other sites. we are all very respectful and willing to help out with your questions and give you congratulations on a good find. I'm very new to this site and have had ZERO bad experiences. If someone here does not know something they will know someone who does. Thanks GB Amateur, Kac, 2Valen and Steve Herschbach for making my first experiences a great one. I wood love to see a Detectorprospector rendezvous, Maybe you could make that happen Steve ??
  20. Thank you , You just verified my thoughts. I appreciate all the effort and time you have given me. I hope to be able to return the favor one day.
  21. Hand forged is really hard to date. A smith that liked a particular design would pass this down to all his apprentices. The eye and the basic shape could be from your time frame but the platform is a little narrow, maybe it got squished in the ground. I know smiths that make reproductions now that would fool most experts if buried for a while. these techniques are passed down for a long time. If I had to guess it's 1880's possibly a woman's stirrup. Just my 2 cents. awesome find anyway you look at it. Just think who's foot and what horse that was on, maybe someone of stature?
  22. Not to familiar with meteorite fragments but Maybe ???? I've heard they have some weird metallurgy. High nickel content ???
  23. Yes, a 1885. I put it under my friends microscope it's definitely 1885. I browsed some auction houses (sold amounts) but did not check ebay, generally sold amounts on ebay are really not that accurate, I've found that most are over priced and have taken a long time to sell. That could be a good thing for me BUT I don't sell on ebay. I was going to contact the NGC to get a better idea if they think this coin might have some merit for a half decent price. I have a friend who's father who deals with some of jewelers and collectors in Philadelphia and was going to ask him for some advise. You sound very knowledgeable about these things. So do you think its worth the $75 to $100 to have this looked at ???? Like I've said coins are a very tricky item. I once went to Four different buyers to sell a dozen Krugerrand's when gold was $1800 an ounce and only one offered me fair value of $1750, the others offered me $300 a coin. So I'm a little gun shy especially with a potentially semi rare coin. Coins are not in my wheelhouse outside of bullion. Sorry for the long response but I'm just not good with coin collecting, and you seem pretty good with this. I'll take all the help you can give me. THANKS so much for all the info you have given me so far
  24. I'm thinking of getting this coin graded. I looked around on the web and found some lower grades can fetch $500 to $700 not to bad! or trade for a new coil or two. I'm thinking this might be my best find money wise. Do you guy's think it's worth the money to have it graded ????
