  1. I once met a guy who owned a book store in Elko, Nevada. He told me that as a general rule all the ancient channels had run towards the west from the rocky mountains long before the Sierras. At the time I didn't know what he was talking about. They used this and of course a lot more information to discover gold in the Carlin Trend and some quite large nugget patches up that way. I guess now when you find ancient river gold high in the Sierras he knew what he was talking about.
  2. I can't quite see the shafts but if you like them that is what is important. As to the extra power, I've never been able to deplete my 800 in less than 10 hours of hunting but I like the counter weight idea you have there. Mitchel
  3. You're the man! What a great outing for a great guy. I'll contrast it with my 2 hour outing on the beach here and I found less than $.50! What coil do you use with the 5000? Mitchel

  5. Walker, did you want to see a picture of it? This was not a sunbaker.
  6. It has been shared before and at the time but the years have passed since then. I still have that nugget and some other pictures of that day elsewhere.
  7. The desert in Arizona is spelled Mohave. The desert in California is spelled Mojave.
  8. This was in a wash. This was as I first saw it. I was in a new area and it was only my 5th or 6th nugget I think, under 10 anyway. I heard it with my 5000 and I think the 8" coil. I looked down and I can remember what I said to myself. "I think I know what that is!" I was without a camera at the time and didn't know my directions back to my car and I was afraid I would never find it again so I carefully lifted it out of the wash, went back to my car and got a camera and after more than half an hour I returned to the spot where I found it. I neatly replaced it where I found it and took several pictures. This was the only picture that was not blurry. I was hunting for meteorites at the time. It was the 10th anniversary of the Franconia Meteorite find. I didn't know exactly where to look for them and I found this. We looked for more meteorites in that area and more gold but could find neither. I still have never found a meteorite on the south side of the freeway. About a year and a half later after thinking about this nugget find for that long period of time I went back with a plan for gold on a Thanksgiving day and found my 20.5/8 ozt Goose Egg Nugget.
  9. This was my best sunbaker from 2012. It has 1.5 ounces of gold with a total weight of 3.5 ounces.
  10. There may more of a market than you think on eBay for the whole piece.
  11. JP, Is this your definition of 'fringe' detecting? Hearing at first a faint target and then interrogating it to Ground Zero. If your target is very deep/small then Ground Zero is proportionately small. Some like me might think it an iffy target but an experienced detectorist would say it is a clear target in that situation. Big targets are forgiving and can be heard with many settings unless they are too deep. It is the little target sounds that require concentration and optimal settings for each of our styles. Maybe these are the fringes the 6000 will excel at without doubting an array of other settings.
  12. Christie's had an auction for meteorites. I read the results and the prices obtained were WAY over the estimates. You can also use these pictures as good meteorite ID photos in case you are wondering 'Do I have a meteorite.' https://onlineonly.christies.com/s/deep-impact-martian-lunar-other-rare-meteorites/lots/2006
  13. If you saw a meteor fall from the sky how would you find the meteorite? There are many cameras looking at the sky. A calculation can be made and give an estimate where the strike would happen. This would be the beginning of the trail and then eye witnesses would assist. This is what happened with this iron meteorite in Sweden. https://www.thelocal.se/20210223/meteorite-hunters-find-swedens-first-ever-new-fallen-iron-metoerite
  14. You have it. Either you see the gold before the detector sees it or you see the gold after the detector but you see it without digging. You can take a picture of a sunbaker and know it is gold.
  15. Let me advance the topic a little bit out of the dilemma category. I belong to a metal detecting club in Southern California that has a group of dedicated people who are called upon by the police to help them find evidence. They are called upon to find evidence in recent crimes which may be bullet fragments or other objects used in a crime. Sometimes this involves searching around areas where bodies have been found. You may want to offer your detecting services to your local police. The people in our group that do it have to have background checks before they are allowed to assist. There are procedures (chain of custody) to be followed so that evidence can be used if discovered. Maybe everyone here could offer to help their local departments if you have the time or inclination.
  16. I would put forth your concern to the local police. Ask them in similar cases were people comforted by what was found or returned. Then ask them specifically about this case and see if they want to relay the message to the family and only contact them if you find something. I think they should give you permission to search for personal items and they may tell you what was being worn at the time.
  17. If you aren't doing anything in 3 hours you can attend a meteorite lecture! Metamorphism of primitive solar system materials Chondritic meteorites represent the most primitive material in the solar system. These chondrites originate from asteroids that did not reach temperatures high enough to melt. Although they escaped melting, some of these primitive asteroids reached temperatures high enough to induce metamorphism - recrystallization of a rock in a solid state. Unlike Earth, where metamorphism is accompanied by pressure and heat, metamorphism on asteroids is driven only by temperature. This metamorphism results in textural and geochemical changes that provide insight into the thermal and physical evolution of small bodies during the solar system's earliest formation. https://ucla.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEqduyupj0vGd3S0_52FsbHTbPjYr0sZQUj
  18. Well done again Seeker. That clad has to stop somewhere. 🙂 It can bring a few 'friends' with it.
  19. Not me! I had no idea this thread was here until Adam used my @mn90403 It made me open it and see just how many people out of the 20 million in Southern California might come to Santa Monica beaches in search of treasure. Now add in those on vacation ... I think someone should have bid. Just think of all the money saved by not having to make it all the way to the beach and even if you made it here you might have gotten skunked!
  20. Ah! Well stated Steve. We have a few algorithms in our brains too. Mitchel
