  1. Joe D's walking staff suggestion seems a practical solution. You could change out shovel heads to suit digging conditions.
  2. You might look at the new NoktaMakro shovel that was recently introduced. It is a sturdy take down design.
  3. I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to the faceplate.
  4. I believe that is a momentary discrimination button. Kind of like a Coin check for nugget hunting. Not sure how it interacts with the regular disc setting.
  5. The old folks stayed close to the water. A lot of my forested bottomland was rich cropland 150 years ago with a lot of activity.
  6. If the site has real History I always dig the Iron that is bigger than nails. Some of my most interesting and telling finds are these common everyday pieces. You never know what it might be next and it clears the way for smaller targets to show through.
  7. I found something similar on Sunday at a mid 1800's site that has no markings on the back and appears older. I too am trying to figure out what it is made of. I suspect Pewter, which has varied in formulation over time. Mine seems to have a higher Lead content than later pieces. I need to still research Britannia Metal. It still has some Silver plate/wash left on it. Yours could also be German Silver which has Nickel in it.
  8. Looking forward to your report. I have found 5 & 14 kHz most useful over all conductors. I use 20 kHz for the small targets or in high trash/nails for it's nimbleness. 20 kHz is not as deep in my ground.
  9. Nice finds and extra points for the careful deep hunting. The pocket watch case should be made of brass which was plated.
  10. I suspect your thoughts of the older coins coming in with the fill dirt may be the case. Looking at the nail you dug close by. It's old and been in the ground a long time.
  11. You might try double checking your coil connection, Also try to do your Ground Balance from COG mode if the soil is very mild or conductive.

You picked a good place to join, Welcome from East Texas.
  13. Welcome from East Texas. Glad to see a young man interested in a real world activity! You picked a good place to join.
  14. That is a good question & observation. I don't have any coke or coal around. I have experimented with Iron Ore rocks & old hand made bricks. May try charcoal and and wood fire pit. Coke gives fits to those in England. Their version of a Hot Rock.
  15. Nowhere in the Anfibio or Impact owners manual does it recommend a factory reset when changing coils. The Garrett manuals all do as far as I know. That is one of the few things I find inconvenient on the AT Max. I'm glad it is not required on the Anfibio with factory coils as all my Mode are customized to some extent. Good to know Non Factory aftermarket coils may need a reset.
  16. I am surprised the mineral meter only functions in Gen Mode on the Kruzer. It functions in all modes on the Anfibio. It is effected by the ISAT. Higher ISAT settings will give less intensity on the meter. ISAT at zero gives full Mineral value.
  17. Thank you to all for the helpful insights. My next step in learning how best to hunt in my more mineralized sites is to build a new small test garden in some 3-4 Bar(out of 5 bars) ground. It may well prove more educational than my Sandy 0-1Bar test garden.
  18. Did you guys have any success experimenting with adjusting the first tone break or using Beach mode on your Iron sites?
  19. I bet all your fish have teeth! Welcome.
  20. At some point in the past I read that Charles Garrett and his team actually documented ground conditions in many locations around the world. This is probably common among detector manufacturers. Would be interesting to see an accurate presentation.
  21. Can you correlate the readings of the Kruzer and Racer? #Bars on Kruzer to % on the Racer?
  22. Yes, the owners manual is vague on the subject. It describes Ground Mineralization by Ground Balance ranges. Some of my hunting sites are deep sandy soil that gives at most 1 Bar on the scale and Ground Balances in the mid 50's. I know this is mild. Some other sites are red dirt over red clay and will give 3-4 Bars on the scale and Ground Balance at 68-74. I am trying to get a idea of the relative soil mineral intensity. The goal being having a gage on the effect it has on the detector's performance and learning how to adapt to the different ground conditions. I think it would be helpful to me to know my 3 Bar on the Anfibio scale is roughly equivalent to X on a F75 or Deus... I realize Ground Balance numbers vary by manufacturer.
  23. Has anyone done a comparison of the mineralization readouts of various brand detectors on the same ground? I know Fisher F75 is considered a standard. I would like to be able to compare my NM Anfibio readings to other detectorist's ground conditions. F75, Deus etc. Also what GB settings others consider mild----hot ground.
  24. Pinpointing remains a challenge sometimes, but the advent of handheld probes sure beats the pants off of what we use to deal with! Maybe someone will introduce a probe that has adjustable Disc/Tone break. That would require it be Motion based so probably not easy to do.
