I've noticed it also. When you find that big nugget, how are you supposed to take a selfie. Or with gold a "goldfie" ?

To all the experts in Nuggetshooting and Metal Detecting on here: What kind of skills and habits do you use in the field and in your reading/research to make you a better detectorist ? I've heard that 10% of the detectorits get 90% of the gold. What sets you apart? What advice and tips do you have for someone that wants to take their detecting to the next level. Is it research, the right real estate, luck, knowing geology, or as my grandpa used to say" your not holding your mouth right" ??? Is it having the best detector available or having an average detector and knowing the machine to it's fullest?

Very nice! Shows that thinking outside the box, hard work and effort pay off.

I've been running hot. 3 or above on the sensitivity. Very low audible threshold. And digging all repeatable signals. Works for me so far. But have to admit it takes getting used to when my GPX 5000 is so stable.

I've been going out detecting for a few hours everyday for the last couple days here in Plumas county. The weather has been so mild lately. Only drawback has been the frozen ground retrieving the targets.

If only I would have waited.

Does anyone ever use the coin /relic setting on the gpx5000? Just curious. I use the 5000 for gold only. The only use for it I could see would be dealing with black sands on a beach.

RIP Jerry Hobbs
Sourdough Scott replied to Gold Seeker's topic in Gold Panning, Sluicing, Dredging, Drywashing, Etc
I had a couple times to sit and chat with Jerry one on one. I really enjoyed it. His dedication to the little guy was un-matched. Prayers to his family. -
How Small Is Your Smallest Piece Of SDC 2300 Gold?
Sourdough Scott replied to rumblefish's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
Had a question about the sdc2300 operating temperature. I live at 5000 ft elevation. And when there is a lack of snow. There are places I hunt in the winter when the temperature might be below freezing. Wondering if it would have any adverse affects on the detector? -
Drones For Aerial Reconnaissance
Sourdough Scott replied to Steve Herschbach's topic in Detector Prospector Forum
Might be a great business to go to people's claims and give them video footage from the air. -
I just purchased a SDC 2300 and own a GPX 5000. Have not taken the sdc 2300 out yet due to snow and work. But was wondering how many detectorists here go detecting on salt? Lakes, Beaches or Ocean area's? Do you have any success ? I never seem to ever hear of anyone finding gold in these area's. But Minelab makes settings for them.

GPX Coil Question - Mono or DD?
Sourdough Scott replied to hawkeye's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
I run mono 90% of the time, in various sizes. Depending on conditions and depth of gold I'm looking for. Mono works for me. But I know some gentlemen that run DD and they kick butt with it. So I believe it comes down to what is comfortable and works for you. Still waiting for that real deep reverse signal though. -
Have You Ever Lost A Site?
Sourdough Scott replied to Mike Hillis's topic in Metal Detector Advice & Comparisons
Klunker. I too live in Plumas county. I found your keys at a hydraulic pit above Quincy. LOL. But I was panning and sampling a creek once. Swear I saw this waterfall. It was getting late. Wanted to hit it. But I left. Went back to look for it in the spring. Walked up and down the stream twice. But no waterfall to be found. Probably a fignewton of my imagination . -
I want to make a external battery set up for my GPX 5000. I already have the correct 7200 MAH LiPo battery. I purchased an external headphone amp from Jonathon Porter. (JP) What I'm having trouble finding is the 5 pin male CB Microphone plug. And after I find one, how do I wire it from the LiPo Battery . I have Deans plugs and wire to go the 5 pin. But the battery has a + and a - , the 5 pin has (of course) 5 pins. So which pins do I wire to. I don't want to fry my GPX 5000. Any input appreciated.

SDC 2300 Bag, Wear & Tear, and 30 Ounces of Gold!
Sourdough Scott replied to rumblefish's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
On just a wild guess. What percentage of the gold do you think you would have missed if you were swinging the GPX 5000 ? I know the bigs would have sounded off with either detector. But the smalls? -
SDC 2300 Bag, Wear & Tear, and 30 Ounces of Gold!
Sourdough Scott replied to rumblefish's topic in Minelab Metal Detectors
JP, wow! Very nice. Mine is coming next week. Can't wait. I'm going to plan on hitting some known patches that have really hot ground. Hotter the better it sounds like. I wonder why they even printed a instructional manual with it. Since it is so user friendly. Lol I enjoy reading your posts Jonathan. On here and FB. -
