  1. She cant keep it all!!!!!! Vic--- This should be an easy fix on the coil brackets, i will just glue some washers on whats left of the brackets and keep on swinging!!!! That was on my 7.5khz 9" concentric coil ----i would love to try a 6 in or 3 inch concentric too....... all possibilities.. I cant believe the brackets snapped---i'm only weighing in at about 290 now and it should have held up better as a walking stick down the hill-----hahahaha. Learned a trick when a re- ran a video on the 705 when i got home---i had not been ground balancing properly for manual or auto tracking--------so many little steps...lol Changing that routine should help me--the ground must be hotter than i thought over here.... paul
  2. Wow...Great job Vic----- Cant beat that...
  3. No problems.... I love to hear everything i can about this detector... I just got back from a short hunt down near Foresthill CA in a pretty good canyon---looking at some tailings and checking out a small stream. Tons of float quartz on the top and sides of the canyon walls but no good distinctive hits---i am still having trouble learning how to discriminate out hot rocks--- I would go over them in the coin mode and reject their number but they still sounded off--- I also had a hard time with the burned ground---- it is very magnetic as my pick magnet would have a ball of material on it just by using it as a walking stick.... The ground would sound off like a target in prospecting ....and then i switched to coin 1 or two .......and the sound would be gone....MOST of the time....sometime it was so hot it would keep sounding off-- I think i could start to hear the difference in the tone of gold vs hot ground, or a nail, -------but i really expected the prospecting to kill the ground noise better.. My buddy was running an AT Gold and it had 3 or four tones that i liked0----it would give the iron grunt----a higher pitch for a coin and an even higher sweeter note for the gold.... when i was detecting near him i could tell exactly what he was hitting.... Now i know i need to get a lot more time in---just asking now if anyone can help me figure out how to get the ground noise to quiet down....I will take a video of it next time---- I am probably going to go to an old mine a friend of mine had next week and we are going to see how safe it looks now---it has been 4 or 5 yrs since he was in it-- We will light it up big time with strings of leds------ it is an old drift mine in the North Fork of the American area and has very concretized river material in it---- The way i understand it is that the miners went thru the hard rock and broke into the river channel to drift it....... Does anyone know if there are any books out that still know how these guys actually mined that way???? ----- I would love to know their day to day routine at a mine like this--- How did they know where to start the tunnel to get to the ancient river bed? Did they live at the mine? What tools did they use and how? What was the ore/paydirt like? How did they break it up to get the gold out of the hardpacked material. How much did they make a day? What did they eat? Did they do this in the winter and stockpile material like a lot of drifters did in AK----(then wash in the spring when the water came?) Where can i get info on the mine itself to see the historic production, etc.... Many many questions???? BTW, I wasn't too happy with Minelabs cheap build on the 705 today----I am speaking of the coil mounting ears-----both snapped while i was sliding down the hill today!!!!!! I guess a bent it the wrong way----- When i looked at the ears i couldnt believe how thin they are----a 1/32 of an inch maybe ===maybe a 1/16th----- but very weak---- JB weld time!!!! I will put some plastic washers next to the broken ears to give me a place to run a bolt thru----- What a pain---- 400 feet down in a canyon and my other coil is up the hill in the truck!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr........ for a quarter more they could have made some decent mounts....
  4. No, no coins for me.. Got a late start after working Friday night.. We went to a gold outing held by AMRA... Met some good people... One was a 705 guru... He showed me the basic set up in 15 minutes.. I am so much better at understanding demo vs reading..... So I am going to a tailings pile today after church. Be blessed out there today.. All of you! Paul
  5. I googled Spanish Ravine and came up with a road in Placerville, CA https://www.google.com/maps/place/Spanish+Ravine+Rd,+Placerville,+CA+95667/@38.7284848,-120.7856291,17z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x809a50bb73a1e5c7:0x25fd025c770c9f65
  6. Why don't you take the 705 and test it alongside the 2300...see how it hits vs the 2300...on the gold
  7. Now that is confusing..... DD vs Concentric Will get our tomorrow and do some testing in the field with my 705....
  8. Sorry---- this one... Capabilities of a Small Coil by Reg Sniff, Lost Treasure Magazine
  9. LINK IS NOT WORKING FOR ME RIGHT NOW.... I WILL CHECK IT LATER TONIGHT WHEN I GET CAUGHT UP AT WORK---THX
  10. Thx Steve... I will read up on this.. I have a big huge pile of tailings to go thru.... Huge... Backing off the bigger coils for now----so glad this stuff was brought up by all of you..... saving me money---and time!!! ----I hope Merton doesnt read this because he gets super agitated when us individual detectorists ----(me) expect everything to be spoon fed to us by those of you who have put in the hours to learn this stuff... research, reseach, research----- Basically, i knew if i asked on this forum i would get help to get me started in this vlf world Here's a gem for you Merton.....---- i thought concentric meant mono!!!! More reading and then boots on the ground Saturday-Tuesday!!!! Thanks to all of you for your input! paul
  11. Thanks for that --I will scout around for a used one first... Ouch 329.00 new.... Sooooooo... In your opinion, I should learn my 705 well---and not worry with the TDI for now? I do have a 2300 if things get too hot for the 705.... I will practice the ground balance technique until I get that down pat. Sounds kinda like I used to have to do with the GB2 when moving from one area of ground to the next....but quicker.. Glad you chimed in--I would have never used the mid freq for gold... and I would not have known the concentrics would be better in trash...
  12. Thx for those tidbits- argyle --way different than what I was expecting!!! I am looking forward to your trip and will be waiting for you to post up when you get to town..... Great luck out there and be safe! paul PS Which frequency concentric are you talking about using the most----the 7.5khz?? 14.5" Coiltek--???? This one? Oh, I see you said mid freq for the concentric --- (7.5khz) right? Any other coils I need to consider---- (waterproof) would be the ticket here too---
  13. Thx Reg! BTW Are you in Pueblo, CO???? I was in Pueblo twice working as a travel nurse at the VA Community Living Center..2011 and again in 2012.. Played around out on the Arkansas at the gravel bar...
  14. Reg, I am interested in the SL simply due to weight----- I have seen Diggerbob with them and they seem like they have a good solid threshold-- What are the pros and cons of them?---- I am in NorCal and fighting some steep slopes and lots of trash... Can they benefit from any mods? Thx and I didn't mean to hijack the thread Rick----- (If there is some place I can do more research on them please let me know and I will do my reading before asking anything else....)
  15. How about the sl... I am too take it that the warbling problems were solved by this model? I am looking at possibly picking one up for it's light weight and use the newer battery for optimization
  16. Not discouraged.. I like trying to figure it out.. In my heart I think it will work good for me in this trashy arena I work/play in.. I Also, I can't forget the beach hunting that I have available here in Truckee.
  17. Well i pulled the trigger on a 705 the other day and i am having a wonderful time trying to figure it out----- First thing i learned the hard way was the screen icons....as in sensitivity and beach mode----- I hunted all one day in NorCal and when i got with in 30 yds of the truck on my way back in i realized I had been in beach mode the whole day -- - (have to be careful with the GB button) But once i came out of beach mode and resumed walking back to the truck i immediately hit a target that was a penny---- so i know it will get a target if i have it set properly.. I also found that it was driving me crazy after that making all kinds of noises (making the 2300 sound like a Buddhist monk) then i looked in the handbook and saw i was running sensitivity as high as it would crank!!!! Turned it down and all is well....lol I got this to hunt in trashy areas ......and in a bunch of tailing piles i have found while out exploring..... I am in NorCal and the trash is crazy!!!! I couldnt stand running the 2300 any longer-- i had to have a break--- I am also looking a a TDI-SL for the areas where it may be a little too hot--- i like the idea of cranking the knobs on it to get the desired effects... an ATX would be nice too--if it were lighter---- too many steep hills over here for this old man!!! Got a good deal on the 705 i think---500.00 with three coils---3khz round, 7.5khz round, and an 18.75 khz eliptical.... SO far i am one cent closer to paying for this unit!!!! lololol If anyone has any NorCal settings for gold that wanna share I am all ears---- And i already downloaded Randy's book.....
  18. You could get rid of the FrankenATX----- i am sure that would help you............ and you would feel sooooo much better.....lol.. Better hurry before i blow my money on a TDI-SL-----
