  1. Last year I went to Victoria for 3 weeks in search of gold. I was given much good advice in this thread. I'd never been to Australia and I was 'hoping' more than researching because I didn't know how to use the research tools you have there. The state maps for Victoria are excellent for the layers they have. There is someone in Geelong who gave me some of the best advice. You'll see him in the thread. I didn't find much gold on my trip just using the purchased maps available for all prospectors. You are doing the right thing by going on private land with the farmers who own the property. Please be generous to them on the split if you hit gold. It WILL pay off with future opportunities. Mitchel
  2. A good quote was had by all! I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl. He is near the end and if he reschedules his final tour I may give it a try.
  3. Welcome, it certainly seems like an interesting area of the world to be a detectorist. I'm glad the country allows you to own them. Are there a lot of detectorists in Indonesia? So many islands to explore with so many historical sites and resorts! Mitchel
  4. Sometimes things just fall together by finding the right thing to focus you at the proper moment. You obviously did your research so you knew it had potential. Well done. Mitchel
  5. I'll tickle the thread and hope I can get on Zoom tomorrow. I've never used it.
  6. Did you shorten your long wires that come with it? Does it have any volume control?
  7. The 'problem' with this type of headphone is that they really aren't designed for the outdoors. If you want to be careful with them and give them some care they will last a couple of seasons and be worth it but don't expect them to last for 5 years or so. I break all my headphones eventually. I've sent several back to Koss for replacement and the last time they just 'fixed' my headphones and sent them back. It was cheaper for them.
  8. I used a model that is discontinued but was made by Able Planet which is kind of an odd name. I originally bought them in an airport store. ABLE PLANET NC180B FOLDABLE NOISE CANCELING HEADPHONES
  9. Last year when I was in Australia Reg asked me if I had ever used noise cancelling headphones. I said yes. He was quite fond of his but he would have to tell you what he used. I used a pair that were about the size of the Equinox headphones and they had a AAA battery and volume control that was great for the WM 10 and 12. I found a lot of gold using those phones that I originally bought to listen to audio while on planes. I had the adapters and at the time I didn't have JP's or the SP01. The noise cancelling was the trick. I've tried other audio headphones and now use the headphones that came with the 7000 but it might be time to ... go back to noise cancelling.
  10. Well done. Nice looking gold. It's a big 'triangle' as I remember it from last year. How the world has changed. Mitchel
  11. Right you are and not as expensive as I thought it was going to be.
  12. Who did you buy the lower shaft from? I would like a whole one with the clamp at the top.
  13. Steve, I read this entire thread to ask you how much this coil reminds you of a Bigfoot. It is long and narrow so ... Mitchel
  14. Ok, Apex 'heal' thyself haha In the meantime I think the phrase is 'achilles heel'
  15. Steve is right in my book. 50 tones and sometimes 5 and I turn up the volume on iron which helps me hear both of the targets or the iffys which start out as negative.
  16. Relying on God are we Steve? haha (For those of you who wonder about this post, when Steve wrote his post above he inadvertently or overtly said "priest" rather than preset.) I do think some of us have prayed and or pray before each hunt but to think of the God 'preset' was a chuckle.
  17. I've been to Lake Tahoe with my CTX 3030. I waded a beach that was not subject to any waves. It was very cold which could have been good but I know several people had already detected it. I've see a couple of videos where people have found old, smaller swimming areas and found jewelry.
  18. Adam, We are now on Daylight Savings Time. I'll check with Norm to confirm.
  19. Jason, I think you are right. I had that warning from him for years I remember the name. He certainly did 'right' by me. He told me he wouldn't give me a second chance! That is good enforcement. Mitchel
  20. Our beaches in southern California have been shut down for a number of weeks. I did manage to sneak in a couple of nighttime hunts but they were nothing to write home about as they say. Even without the metal detecting pressure the conditions just weren't right. Some of that changed this week and the beaches were also opened on Wednesday. I couldn't go that day but I did go on Thursday in the daylight! haha I had some 'moderate' success at one of my favorite beaches. There was a bit of a slope to it but no real cut. The tide was not very low but I could detect the top of the hill, avoiding a few people. I managed one junk ring, a cheap bracelet, a lock and key and some salvage scraps missed when a sailboat was yanked off the beach a few months back. There was also the Australian coin! It was a good enough hunt to encourage me to go back today. And the wind waves had changed the shore for the better. It was a bit steeper. I did the best I could with the incoming tide and the extra number of people trying to social distance. It took away some of my grid areas so I had to modify my hunt. Within the first 15 minutes I got a nice silver ring. It wasn't high and it wasn't low on the hill. I made a note of it of course but kept to my pattern for this beach which produces with a grid. You can find rings mixed in with coins. You keep a tight pattern and you will get directly over your target if it is there. Funny thing was that was not how I got this ring. I heard it 'off coil' in my fringe at the bottom of my turn and had to seek it out to then see the 28 which made me think it was a quarter but it is much better. It is a little small for me but it is 10g/.925. Most of the coins were found up and out of the now rising tide but I didn't have much time so I wanted to go back to that heavy ring line and see if there was more. This brought me down to where the people walking area was against the water. I left the perpendicular grid for a parallel sweep. It wasn't long before I had a couple more rings! Both of them are stainless steel and of no value but I found them the same way. They caught my attention 'off coil' and then I dug down the 5-7 inches to get them. Once I got over them they had numbers like 10 or 16 with my settings at 23/6/50/no iron bias. I reversed myself on the beach to keep my pattern and skipped a few pennies (20) to not waste time as my zone was about to be under water and I could lose things in the surf. Near the end of the session I got my last ring. It is a 10k/2g but I'll take it. There was one additional silver chain section and some junk jewelry pieces. I hope there is more when I go back! You never know with a beach but I had to go. It was fun. Mitchel
  21. There are people still using them so I think the threads are probably in the coins or Minelab forums.
  22. Yes, that would help but you need to control the amount of information you are gathering. There is a lot of power in even a small PI coil so the 'fringe' can affect your searching. You don't want more of the soil than necessary also. If you look at the beach PIs they tend to have the 11-12 inch coils because in wet beach sand you can't dig everything unless you have one of the huge scoops. I used the 11" Commander coil most often on the beach. There are some good timings for those units in the same way you can choose park, field or beach. Another good coil for the GPX is the 8" coil. That can be fun and productive.
  23. Try a small coil Simon. I used my 5000 on the beach in 2010 for about a year before I got my Explorer SE Pro. I dug everything but you began to learn the sounds and truthfully I did some skipping.
