  1. Many of us have lots of pinpointers, but nothing beats the ol' Garrett Carrot. Not the wireless one, the standard AT. I have two Carrots, a Fisher, two Quest pointers and two MI-6 pointers. While I prefer the MI-6 for everything, often I bring a Quest with me on hunts, because despite it's issues, it does a good job identifying iron vs non-ferrous targets. If I'm not using an XP detector, the Carrot goes in my bag. I've seen plenty of praise for the Fisher but it never seems quite as strong for me as others, maybe mine isn't all that great. I have put in a preorder for the AccuPoint, but only time will tell.
  2. Could be where I live, but EMI isn't much of a problem here. Yes, the occasional blip from my cell phone seeking a signal (some places there is next to nothing), and some underground power lines. There are a couple places where other SMF detectors have big issues but the D2 does not. However, any place that that my "other detector" was completely unusable I have been able to use the D2 with little or no problem. I agree with Jeff that if you expect the machine to run completely silent you picked the wrong machine, but regarding other XP machines, I hunt with Chase all the time, and we never have issues because we use frequency shift if we do. Additionally I can hear other vendors' machines pretty far away at group hunts. Frequency shift and move away is the solution. One point of interest under V.71 was that @Rattlehead's Silver Slayer allowed me to hunt directly under power lines. πŸ€” I wonder if SS would still be valid under V2. My summer travels take me up and down the East coast from Virginia to Savannah, and I don't encounter anything that causes me to curse XP. πŸ˜€ I can always find some happy place. If all else fails I have found reducing sensitivity or audio response helps greatly. Sure you lose some depth but you still come away with finds, I fail to see what is wrong with that. 😎
  3. Hey bigtim, Have you used the short wire to update your headphones? You cannot use the longer 3 connector USB cable. Also the WS6 cannot be paired to anything, you have to unpair it from anything to have it stand alone. When both pucks are at the same version, only then can you pair the WSA II to the WS-6. πŸ™‚ Despite the upgrade the devices hold their pairings.
  4. CooB scoop, most are 2mm stainless, tough stuff. Avoid thinner metal. I've had one for 3 years now and it still looks new, it's kinda heavy but I added a SteveG carbon fiber shaft and a Raptor pull handle. Weighs about 4 pounds total. https://www.amazon.com/CooB-Detecting-Stainless-Detector-ProSeries/dp/B07CZYTTJH Raptor handle: https://www.amazon.com/Raptor-Pull-Handle-Sand-Scoops/dp/B01MT248MD When I go to a beach that is less pebbly and had fewer rocks and finer sand, I have a Dune Titanium scoop, also on a SteveG shaft. It weighs about 2 pounds. Titanium is strong but it tends to bend with prying. https://www.amazon.com/Dune-Scoops-Titanium-Beach-Detector/dp/B0C1HL6VLD Other scoops are great but these are affordable.
  5. Nice taps, JCR. πŸ‘ I've found quite a few of them, all brass or some copper alloy, none quite as fancy, always green. What makes yours black?
  6. To me, lots. @Jeff McClendon has reported better gold detection, and I'm finding V2 to be far more stable overall. Since all my testing of the Deus 2 is in the field and I am not an engineer, all I can do is report on the "feel" of the improved firmware and the options. There seem to have been changes in ID regarding copper and zinc/copper metals such as US 1 cent coins. Zinc/copper or "Zincolns" now produce IDs lower than more pure copper coins. I think separation has been improved, but that is based on my part of the world. I've gone to places previously searched and found as many targets as before, in two cases I set a new record for coin finds even though I dug many in the past. I'm just about to get out to the farms, it's been campgrounds and beaches all summer. Watch my future posts... The WS-6 had a problem since V1, the pinpoint function didn't work at all. A newer update specifically for it fixes this problem. About the only thing I am concerned with is that the pinpoint volume on both the D2 remote and WS-6 seems to have been lowered, and there is no way to adjust it. I don't use it much but that is the only thing that stands out so far as a drawback to V2. I would say V2 is definitely an advantageous update. πŸ‘
  7. Wow Cap'n, It took me a long time to find my first Barber, I was always seeing them here and it drove me nuts. πŸ€ͺ They should be everywhere I hunt, and they're not, so congrats! Sad that the ground wasn't kind to it but still awesome. πŸ‘ Looks like that park has potential for the persistent. πŸ™‚ cool smattering o' stuff! I think digging some of that iron probably helped find better targets, which is always a hazard for us. As always your finds have that real "Western" feel to them. What ya gonna do with that Spigen Hub, or is it a thumb drive? πŸ˜€
  8. Great review, MFF18B. Thank you! Guess I'll check this one out when it's available, I've always wanted to give Nokta a nod, and haven't seen much of interest lately, the new ML pinpointer doesn't seem all that great. I have the Fisher and both the old and new Quest pinpointers, and for me the MI-6 is by far the one I go to. I've done a lot of real time and air tests with all of them. The Quest pointers are good, but I find even the improved one is full of bugs: It doesn't always turn off with the "Magic" function The buttons are still hard to find The menus are difficult to remember at best. That listed, it does a fair job of discriminating and is a lot less prone to falsing but it almost feels like its detection range and sensitivity were lowered. I use the Quest in deep holes to stop digging if the target is iron 😏 A lot of y'all rave about the Fisher, but I just don't see it. It's too quiet and for sure in air tests it gets hammered by most of the other pointers, maybe it's better in the ground but I've "seen" much deeper with the MI-6, could be because headphones. πŸ˜€ I've taken it with me a few times and it doesn't "gel" with me. Again the button isn't easy to find, that annoys me, albeit similar to the MI-6. By far the best button is on the Carrot, but the Nokta has promise because it's above the LCD screen, find that and pull your thumb back. Just an observation. πŸ™‚ Looking forward to this one!
  9. NCtoad!!! πŸ₯³ Great job man, that's a lot of digging. πŸ‘ I was averaging about $10 a day at the campground so I feel the ache. Sadly no good rings just junk. I just waved the 13" under the benches, if I got a blip I went after it with the MI-6. Much better idea to pull the coil. You don't have a lot of "freshies" in that pile 'o' clad so it looks like you're hitting the deeper stuff. πŸ™‚ Good to see ya back!
  10. Killer hunt SwiftSword! πŸ‘ Good on ya for jumping on an opportunity, all the owner can say is no. It's much more fun when they don't. 😁 Apparently multiple silver coin finds in one day is getting rare, I think the best I ever did was 3, and my "fever" kicked in after the first 🀣 Your ship wheel button is intriguing, might have something to do with steamships or yachting. Could you post front and back photos? Hope you find other interesting relics there, seems high potential.
  11. Nice finds Jeff, glad the Legend is working for you in the tough stuff. πŸ‘ Did some quick research, and apparently the Grasshopper or Locust is a symbol of faith, from one account the insects can only leap forward. πŸ™‚ Pretty good detail on the 1875 seated, that year had a fairly high mintage but it's still a great save.
  12. Nice hunt School! That is some mean black sand, looks a lot like my local beach with the fine white stuff shot through with black. πŸ™„ Probably why I don't find much there. All I ever get is water at 24", sometimes sooner but that's the Potomac. πŸ˜€ The deep beer cans always sound great tho. Nice pendant and one of your pieces of bling (lower left) looks like something I would look at later - very closely - to see if it was part of a cut coin. That's some digging. πŸ‘
  13. Thanks! Were it that I had a single shred of detail. 😡 I would be thrilled if that's what it was. It weighs 10.7 grams too. I'll have to compare it with other large cents I've found. One thing for sure this is an easy place to dig. Every farm everywhere. You might run into clay sometimes but there are no rocks over the size of small. πŸ™„ Seems like it now and again but that is a tell for big iron. πŸ˜€ I'm tracking my field hunts in OnX Hunt now, so I know where I've been, have photos and markers of the finds, and know how long I was out there and how many miles it was. Even if I forget to turn tracking off I can edit the track later! I wouldn't trade these aches, pains, and muscle cramps for a sedentary lifestyle for sure. I haven't pushed myself this hard since Basic Training... 😏 41 years ago 🀣
  14. Thanks Mark, This was a bit of a joke in that it was Friday the 13th. 😏 the only bad luck was not getting enough detail on the coins. πŸ˜€ Sucks to be me πŸ™„ It was a great hunt, there is nothing like hunting freshly tilled ground. The owner saw me out there and probably rolled his eyes a bit, it was finished just a day or two ago and here I am out there digging it up. 😬 Thought of that, and in the finely tilled spots I even slotted the topsoil in the pattern the tiller made after filling in the hole. When you're digging in a place that is on the National Historic Register, you want to come back so you take pains to keep it nice. 😁 A few of my permissions, thankfully privately owned by very nice people, are like this.
  15. Thanks Cap'n, I feel kind of silly using a Beach program out here in the dirt, but if you dig a fair amount here you find fine silica beach sand, and it's mixed in with the topsoil making it a diggers' paradise. This peninsula is surrounded on all sides by brackish water with salt content as well. But, if it's dry for a bit it becomes concrete. This area of field closer to the old house had sunflowers on it and was tilled heavily in 2 directions. It was as dry as it looks, so I'm waiting for the all day rain today to settle it a bit and light up the targets. I found the oval horse tack here, but depth was an issue. I did find Gary's Deep HC program to be hot on the small stuff, but the small stuff is buckshot smack in the gold range. πŸ˜€ it also drove up IDs by one or two numbers. The D2 feels like a whole new machine now with V2, overall far more precise which makes the 13" a real winner. πŸ™‚ In the coming weeks I'm going to give the WS6 a shot with the 9" in the corn stalks at other fields, I'm hoping for some interesting results!
  16. Thanks VL, It's not every day you just walk out in a field and nail a large cent, honestly I was done at that point, everything else was gravy. Tilling flips some vertical stuff horizontal, so there should be a fair amount of stuff but it's not going to be as fruitful as it was. However, getting the obvious stuff out makes it easier to find the better stuff like the old gold ring I snagged here a while back. Tracking hunts helps you find the unexpected. Large cents, like silver coins, are very easy to find for me at nearly any depth, I got a nice 1775 KG here a year or two ago in an unlikely spot loaded with aluminum. I think I was using the 600. πŸ€”
  17. Thanks RVP, You bet it was! I was thrilled to be out in a field with no one around asking if I found anything... 😎 and about 20 other cliche questions.
  18. Thanks JCR, This spot has about 100 or so acres of huntable field. Still quite a bit of old out there apparently. πŸ™‚
  19. No worries Doc, I found it funny. One of the best things about this forum are the occasional jabs 🀣 Glad you supplied the punch line! This was kinda a tongue in cheek post anyway. Indeed it did, I tried it when I first bought the detector and didn't like it much then either. πŸ€” However, the go-no go nature of 2 tone Deep HC is intriguing .Gotta say it did great with small stuff, but an 8 hour hunt with it wouldn't be a good idea for the battery. πŸ˜€ Going to take some time to prove it, but I'm getting more signals and great separation using a program based on Beach Sensitive with its additional settings, particularly Magnetic Accept/Reject. It's pretty useful. That IHP was at least 10" deep with iron around it.
  20. Had some truck maintenance to do today, afterward I took a ride past one of my permissions. Noticed it had been tilled. Went back to the house and grabbed my D2 with 13" coil, gear and shovel. It was a great day today, got into the low 70s with a good breeze. We've hit this field pretty hard the last couple of years, I figured I'd have to work for my finds. But 10 minutes in I got a 93. I was shocked to get a large copper coin, either a large cent or a King George. Great start anyway, not many large coppers have come from this place. I checked earlier tracks to see if this was missed, but found I was in a spot largely unexplored. Threw it in my bag and moved on happy. 5 hours and over 4 miles later, I was tired and done. Here's the trash, I'm using my program I used at the campground, and also tried Deep HC like we saw Gary Blackwell use in his latest video, with some minor tweaks. For about an hour or so at the end I switched between the two, and think my program was better. πŸ˜€ I managed to collect 4 colors of shotgun shells, some big iron to verify that my programing was ok, and some buck and primers. Even a pull tab! Here's the stuff too big to put in a display case: Old spoon handle with a monogram, huge bronze bushing, a small broken off handle and a tire air cap. And now the haul, it was a lucky day but there was bad luck afoot as you'll see. The top 3 coins all do not have enough details to identify them! 😡 the large copper is 28.3mmx2.1mm, possibly a large cent. Second is a wheat with no discernable date, and last but not least, an IHP with nothing other than its thickness to identify it. On the bright side, got the two piece gold plated button, a nice oval piece of horse tack that probably had something fancier on it, and some buckle bits. Not bad for getting out in the fields for the first time since May. πŸ€” Shoulda brought a knee pad and a bigger pouch. πŸ˜€
  21. Stellar finds Doc, you're now the second one I've seen to find something Chatelaine-related. I dug one about 2 years ago, gave it to the landowner with some small silver coins and buttons. Mine was copper or brass and marked "England". Dug it at a house site that was standing until the mid 1900s. πŸ‘ Got a lot of wheats, IHPs, and a few old buffalo and V nickels there. Pretty sure the silver was scoffed.
  22. Doing good Gopher! πŸ‘ Looks like beach/park season might be winding down for ya, depending where you are. Here is atrocious, and I don't have any parks. 🫀 My beaches are "bargain" beaches, got about 5 cheap rings last year and only one or two this year. For the most part it is what it is. πŸ˜€ Hope you can get some relic hunting permissions for the next few months!
  23. Thanks Cap'n, Some of my fields are harvested, but it's corn this year. Thus far they haven't tilled or bush hogged the stalks, so I'm going to be limited to the 9" coil out there. Maybe I'll drag out the 11" and give it some trigger time. The bean fields are pretty far from harvest still. 😡 I was going to write "Yep, just slap on the 13x11" and go"... 😏 🀣
  24. Heh, I PM'ed you the Hoover MFF... Luckily neither of y'all are near me if you don't like it 😬 But I'm sure you will. πŸ™‚
  25. Wow, Doc! πŸ† Some incredible finds. Wish I had 50 years of stuff and could do a great post like this but... ... Everything I've found detecting is here already🀣 Thanks for some beautiful and interesting relics. I think my favorite is the Army one, but I'm biased. πŸ˜€
