  1. amazing finds brought about by reseach, hard work and fantastic luck! fred
  2. Jonathan Porter I did not notice undue instability in the treasure talk Video. Your son was using the Booster/speaker combo. My question is would the warble mentioned be less noticeable with the booster/speakers than using headphones? fred
  3. If you don't use it for a weed-wacker, hammer or prybar it is very durable. I have had mine for over a year with no problems. I use mine mostly in parks and on ocean beaches with some use in the gold fields. I have the 17 inch and the stock coil... It is a pricey toy...but it is only money. fred
  4. Nice gold, of course! I just thumbed through your website-very nice! I didnot see any way to preorder one of your books. Did I miss that page? fred
  5. wooden handles will rot over time, but there are fiberglass shovel handles that age well and are very strong... fred
  6. Nice gold...way too cold for me! I love hunting GB, gold and meteorites are hard to beat. And the country reminds me in some ways of parts of Australia...land of my dreams. fred
  7. So many excellent pointers for park and sports field hunting. Steve, the high-speed hunting you describe reminds me of a couple I used to run into in one of my favorite parks. They seemed way to old to be detecting back when I was thirty. They were about the age i am now, how one's perspective changes-I digress. Her method was to get a signal and scratch around with her screwdriver. If it was not right on the surface she moved on. She found many rings and never dug a hole. fred
  8. There are spots on the links that donot look like gold, my guess is plated brass, copper or??? of the gold I have found of any karet weight cleans up very easy and bright...also some plated stuff done over some ferrous material..check it with a magnet; that is what the gold buyers do as part of their process. fred
  9. I have no idea if anyone else agrees with this but... Most of my detecting I have been biased toward the smaller and larger coils Almost always one must buy the stock coil and then buy the small and large coils also. I would love the option of choosing which coil I get with the detector and then choose another if the deal is a package...or as I see the need. I am not in marketing so I have no idea of the economies involved-just one of my druthers. happy new year to all fred
  10. Yeah, every bit as cool as being on the cover of Rolling Stone!!! great articles as usual, there is an article about diamond mining in Indiana glacial moraines... fred
  11. Water expands when it freezes-i am sure you know that. However, also taking a warm unit into the cold can cause problems from condensation freezing or simple thermal expansion/contraction. I leave my detector in my truck, covered when cold but still in the enviorment to acclimatize...If you are a hunter you know the problems of taking a gun from hot to cold can cause. fred
  12. Western/eastern Treasure mag had an article about someone that dredged just below that bridge in Reno...back in the early 80's if memory serves...I doubt you could get away with that now...The river should be ripe by now; or wait for a drought year and detect below the bridge.... Yes, the views on the beach can be distracting but always interesting. fred
  13. My belief is that dousing works best when the "need" or "Greed" is at a minimum...if the equipment used helps focus the search that is fine. I don't think electroscope type dousing rods are any better than a rod or pendulum... just my opinion fred
  14. Thanks plidn1; very good pointers for all, I appreciate the reply. fred
  15. Thanks Steve, I was not aware of that book; I will be getting it fred
  16. thanks, plidn1...I dig more trash than anyone I know but the trash/gold ratio is not to my liking. I would still like to know what you mean by "working smart"....what do you do that makes your method so effective for you? I don't live any where near you and I am not interested in your location... just your general methods.... fred
  17. I do a lot of digging of all types of targets but donot find that much gold. That must mean I don't "work smart"...please enlighten this unenlightened one?????? always willing to learn............ fred
  18. Excellent subject...I bet you have a tired back from cleaning out the foil, pulltabs and foil-lined-rusty-bottletops ... fred
  19. While out in the dale Mining area I have played with my 3030 in the all-metal coin mode...it has picked bullets and aluminm and brass out of the iron infested/hot rock infested campsites... Hopefully, I will glean some great info from the Masters...if you don't get too technical for me. fred
  20. Mostly because I am not very smart...and because I am often more involved in watching for animals, snakes, lizards and bugs than paying attention to my detector like I should. fred
  21. Hawkeye; the 11 commander-mono is an excelllent coil. Be aware of this, if you have a mono coil on and switch to cancel it is effectively a dead coil. However it is an effective way to pinpoint large targets. I have from time to time enjoyed some very quiet detecting--- before I checked my switch position. Also, while you are waiting just use your dd in the mono position. The coil as has been mentioned becomes a psuedo-mono...and is very sensitive but the target will seem off-center. Also, if you are working very, very close to power lines give the cancel mode a go...with the dd Good hunting
  22. Finding your first is the most important milestone in nugget hunting...finding little ones proves you are using your detector correctly...and that assures that any of size and in range will be detected...Well Done! fred
  23. I don't have any old loose coils to test that on...be sure you get a can of the lowest expansion injectable foam...it is used in construction to seal cracks and is very sticky...beware! fred
  24. Thanks, Steve....I ride my detector/coils pretty easy but it is good to know what the inside is made of. I hate false signals from bumping a bush and most of my coiltek coils did that.... I wonder if a few small holes and some low-expansion foam would solve most falsing problems on coils that arenot already fully embedded??? fred
