  1. Milwaukee in May. That's a full day (with more driving than attending the show), but "where there's a will, there's a way."
  2. Great find, Paul! Just from what you've shown, pre-washed, the condition (lines on shield, feathers on eagle) looks quite high. Makes you wonder if the soldiers were paid with half dollars, and how many days pay 50 cents was back then. Hope there's more there for you to discover.
  3. They may not want to eliminate their dealer networks, but they don't have to. Look at auto companies. You can go to the dealer, they fill out an order for a vehicle with the option packages you want, send it off to the factory, and call you when it's delivered to their lot.
  4. Here's a thought to ponder: where did the gold contained in the jewelry you find on the beach originate? It's a zero sum game and the direction of movement is only one-way.
  5. I ignore both the TID and the depth indicator when in pinpoint mode. AFAIK those features only apply to search mode operation -- specifically when pinpoint is not activated. I suppose one could argue that if they have no meaning when in pinpoint, why are they even displayed. 🤷‍♂️ Maybe a future software update will address that, but I'm not holding my breath.
  6. I'm sure I'm not the first to wonder about the following: Minelab decided not to produce more than 2 coils for their flagship GPZ7000, nor allow an independent company to build one. Eventually an independent aftermarket company figured out how to do that without approval, and appears to be successful (both technically and financially) in their attempt. Minelab came out with a low priced Multi-IQ detector which in most ways is a watered down Equinox. But they decided to produce a completely new set of coils for it which are, as released (and annointed by the almighty), incompatible. How long will it take a resourceful 3rd party to short circuit the built-in incompatibility and modify the Vanquish coils to work on the Equinox?
  7. I guess we are constantly reminded that as much as we want to consider ourselves, the consumers (and payers) as important, respected, and listened-to contributors, we are simply (and particularly in the eyes of at least some manufacturers) sheep to be herded to the troughs.
  8. Could you be more specific on what you mean by 'clad' and 'copper'? I know a lot of people smeer 'clad' to mean other than actual (in USA) 75-25 copper-nickel layers on a pure copper base (post-1964 USA dimes, quarter, halves, and some of the dollars). Those should read very similar to 95% copper pennies (prior to 1982 mintage). Specifically clad dimes and 'copper' (technically bronze and in the later years, brass) pennies give very close to the same TID response on my detectors. I can't help you with sorting out the differences between the performances of the various MultiKruzer coils since I don't have one of those units, but I bet others here can. BTW, that 2-tined object in your first photo looks like a ball-mark repair tool carried by golfers. I don't know when those came into use, but hopfully yours is an antique version. Are any of those dimes in the photo pre-1965?
  9. "Now don't be sad, 'cause one out of three ain't bad." (Credit to Meat Loaf.) I agree with strick. Sometimes good looking rings turn out to be simply plated. Still satisfying and informative find, IMO.
  10. Good call! There does seem to be a small indentation right where the reed would have attached. Mine (as seen in my original post) is very rusted from years in the ground. I found it in a school yard which kinda fits (children playing with such an instrument and losing it). Here's a pic I found online:
  11. Welcome, cowtownkid! To answer your question -- I do recall seeing such, that is an attachment method hidden by a decorative cover/cap/recessed disc on the top of a knob. If you remove it carefully (I'm W.A. guessing it's aluminum) you should be able to replace it later. You found a 24 inch diameter pipe that was buried 14 feet deep with a 2-box metal detector operated from the surface of the ground??
  12. Nice results, and a $25 casino chip? That's quite a bonus! I think the word 'worth' can be confusing. I assume you mean if you were to buy one new it would cost you that much. Turning yours into cash is likely going to lead to a disapponting result. Ideally you find someone ready to leap at the high pricetag for a new one and intercept that transaction, offering a used one for less. Precious metal jewelry is supported by the bottom line that it has bullion value. Tungsten, although a specialty metal with its strength, high melting point, and high density (specific gravity), is common enough and in low enough demand that it doesn't compete with silver, gold, platinum, etc. Sounds like you've found a honey hole. Don't let the tide sweep it away before you get the chance(s) to harvest more.
  13. I've read a couple of his articles in ICMJ. Here is the back cover with bio -- hope it's high enough resolution to read:
  14. Mine arrived today; I'll start reading tonight. Preliminary impressions: high quality production -- slick, magazine style coated pages, but much thicker paper than magazines. Loaded with color pictures -- most pages have two pictures. Moderate size (6" X 9"), 120 pages with moderately large print (easy for us old guys to read 😁). "Proof is in the pudding" so give me a few days (I'm a very slow reader, and it's not a subject I'm expert at).
  15. Thanks, Paul, for a very informative post! I have a couple questions, as usual. Does this mean you did not have 4-pin 12"x10" DD to put on the Lobo-ST? I don't know much about Tesoro models except what I've read here (and have been able to remember...) and from looking at an old (2014?) catalog. I was under the impression, I guess at least partly from their looks, that the Cortes and DeLeon were similar. Your results put a nix on that idea. Reviewing the catalog's feature lists, I notice that the DeLeon's say "Preset Ground Balance" and the Cortes says "Preset or Manual Ground Balance." Is that the big difference and the reason your difficult ground showed a huge difference in capability? Not a complaint -- as always you go with what you have available -- but you've left me wondering how the other 4-pin ('delta') detectors (Tejon, Vaquero, Cibola) would have compared with your extensive lineup of 5-pin ('epsilon') models.
  16. For those of us on this site who have watched this show a few times (or more), most of those 15 points that Mitchel linked to aren't eye-opening, just the opposite. Here's one that I found particularly humorous: Most viewers would expect the miners on Gold Rush to be fairly experienced. After all, the show doesn’t exactly make out that they are amateurs. But the truth is that many of those taking part do not have that much experience mining and this is why they make so many mistakes.
  17. You didn't mention the TID, but that adds further evidence assuming it's in the 20's. Weren't a lot of those coins modified as love tokens only reworked on one side? If so, yours would be an even more unusuual find. Nice, regardless. And the token seems to be of pretty high trade-in value. When did the hotel go out-of-business?
  18. What detector doesn't? You can discriminate them out, either with settings or just your brain. But you're going to miss a lot of things that aren't pulltabs -- as always, the individual detectorist's choice. I see you've made the same one I usually do. Nice tokens! BTW, do you know the age range of the J. C. Higgins shotgun butt?
  19. Wow, I didn't expect that kind of response! You really know your antiques. My wife has it now. Still a long way from 'paying' for my detectors, but that's not why I detect. It's the anticipation, the fun, the mystery, the satisfaction, the camaraderie. You can't put a price on those. The winter seems to have departed here, at least for the next 10 days. Supposed to be ~60 F today. I may have to share the school-grounds with others who have been suffereing from cabin fever, but I'll take it.
  20. I found this ring with amber stone while detecting in a park a couple weeks ago. The park was established in the early to mid 1950's, and previously it was a pasture. I certainly don't know when this was dropped but I think it may be old. It was only about 3 inches deep, but other targets in the general area (e.g. bullet casings) indicated that area had not been re-landscaped, likely ever. Sorry for my poor photography -- the red background I chose has polluted the color of the ring. A friend with a high quality camera shot some photos of the hallmarks, which were actually on the outside surface of the ring -- not where I'm used to finding markings. Because the ring surface isn't flat, you can see that the middle mark is out of focus, but I think it is simply '925' with the numeral 9 not having been stamped well. I think the left mark is either 'MI' or 'IW'. The rightmost mark is the most interesting. This one is actually upside down in the photo. Again there is a '925' but the other two inscriptions are what I'm especially curious about. Can anyone help with either the 'MI'/'IW' mark or the multi-icon RH mark?
  21. (Here's a thread from November 2019.) They may be planning on releasing it for the 2020 Northern Hemisphere warm (spring+summer+fall) seasons. There are going to be a lot of disappointed detectorists if this doesn't meet the "under $400" category, and preferably under $300. 22. Welcome, oro! I wish I were closer to Georgia -- sounds like a fun adventure. (But I don't have a boat...). Good fortune in your search.
  23. The fact that you're digging up targets like you've shown clearly indicates your MultiKruzer is working well. Coal ash can be particularly interfering. Hopefully (and likely) there are some old coins there. Just keep putting in the hours and they'll rear their pretty heads. 😏
  24. Welcome Billy! That's why most of us continue with this endeavor -- the fun of it. Keep that attitude and you'll be just fine. Sounds like you're a beach hunter. Lots of those here whose brains are worth picking.
  25. If you're not familiar with this website, it should complement her photos, and maybe even show you some things even she is unaware of.
